Kingdom Hearts is an awesome game, but an RPG it is not.

My first RPG... huh. Well, not counting tabletop boardgames with stat sheets I don't think I ever had an RPG (meaning stats and levels and equipment) for the NES so my first was probably Final Fantasy Mystic Quest... which was a pretty lackluster game but fun. I got that because I wanted to pick up FF2 (FFIV) but didn't have enough money. That was the -next- RPG I played though... then Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) and FF3 (FFVI) after those.
Because it was a good time to start playing games. Just beyond the 8-bit tech barrier but not quite to "OMG visual effects are everything" of the 64 bit processor.
Someone mentioned Legend of Dragoon. That was a god-awful game and I still wish I'd played through the entire thing. Just on principle.

Ive always thought tatics it how it should have been in every single ff...but then again...there is behind all the individualized attacks they resemble a single class...like Kimari fom ffx was a blue mage

If it clarifies, Dragon Warrior turned into Dragon Quest.
Which is like, the DBZ-styled RPG series.
Secret of Mana is a SNES title.
Man, you guys really suck at video games.

And yeah.
The Legend of Dragoon is a TERRIBLE game.
But I will love it forever and ever and ever and ever.
KB: Oh, I never liked those games.

VII literally was my first RPG. I think before that I played... like... wrestling games? F I dunno.
I think I would have to say XI just might be my favorite. And yes, it totally counts. VI, VII, and VIII are all close runner-ups.
Above them, though, is Tactics. Tactics is king.
Side note: I saw this in GameInformer the other day, but 1998 KICKED a**.
Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tekken 3, StarCraft, Fallout 2, Pokemon Red and Blue, Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time... holy s**t, that year made my youth and subsequent life.

Oh man, someone other than me showed XI some love in the poll.
I'm... ... ... quite honestly shocked by this. HOW?
@ Legend of Dragoon: I barely remember anything about it, but I know that the combat was terrible (even though it tried to be more involved, it just made it clunky and draining to go through random battles with timed hits as a necessity) and the story was pretty lackluster. Also random battles happened every 4-5 steps.
But somehow I still have warm feelings for the train wreck that is Chrono Cross so how could I not like it at least a little?

Legend of Dragoon: You turned into DRAGOON monster people and fought Dragons.
All you need to know about that game.
Oh, and I think it had quick time events at one point. Which was pretty ahead of its time.
Edit:
Zone of Enders: I ******** loved those games. I never heard of this tactics game though.

Zone of the Enders was great! Never got around to playing the second one like I wanted.
I hated the people who said they only got ZOE for the MGS2 demo. I mean, I love MGS, but I wanted ZOE for ZOE.
Plus, MGS2 was easily the worst of the bunch... *shudders*
