FFVII was a great game. It had tons of good elements to it and only a very small number of bad ones (most of which don't count since they're just complaints against the odd style of clothes or weapons that Final Fantasy as a franchise has always given its characters).
It just wasn't worth all the hype it got. It was a good game. It wasn't the greatest game, and everyone harping on it like it was has driven a lot of people into disliking it on principle and forgetting what a quality gaming experience it provided.

The Fiend of the West Nine was better. Nine gets like no credit. So, in ******** you FF7. This. Also, as much as I disliked VIII's story, I have to say that it was ultimately a better game.

Played FF9, didn't like it at all. But hey everyone entitled to an opinion. Just imagine if FF7 got remade for the PS3, something most fans of the series have been praying for, but have hinted they could do it.

FF7 isn't so great for its actual content, the story and characters aren't really that unique at all. FF7 was groundbreaking by introducing the RPG genre to a very wide audience. For most people I know it was their first RPG and it got them interested into older and newer stuff.

Allow me to summarize the key complaints directed at several of the FF line games:
FFX-2: "wtf is this I'm a pop idol warrior princess?"
FFX: "I hate the main character and the game is pretty linear."
FF9: "I hate the main character and wtf is with this endboss?"
FF8: "I hate the main character, the weird combat system, and somewhere along the line this storyline got seven colors of retarded."
FF7: "The main character is too emo, the badguy's sword is too long, and there are too many fanboys."
FF6: "I can't tell who the main character is. This is awesome."

My first RPG was The Legend of Dragoon.
That game sucks.
I will love it forever.

I got pulled into RPG's through Xenogears. Then played Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Legend of Dragoon (forgot about it for a second) before I tried Final Fantasy.
