but as hinting to someone as a hero ariving late...
The April 2002 edition of Electronic Gaming Monthly made a now-infamous hoax that Sonic & Tails were unlockable in Super Smash Bros. Melee by defeating 20 Fighting Wire Frames in Cruel Melee. This turned out to be an April Fool's prank when the cheat was entered.[27] Before leaving Sega to form his company, PROPE, Yuji Naka stated that he would have asked Nintendo to put Sonic in Melee, but "time constrains did not allow us to continue with this idea."[28] In August 2006 however it was confirmed that Sonic was the most requested third-party character to appear in its sequel Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii.[29] Sonic's inclusion is stated as not being "on the cards" so his current chances are completely unknown. Around the same period of time, Yojiro Ogawa, producer of Sonic and the Secret Rings, stated in an interview with the UK's Official Nintendo magazine that "In my personal opinion, it would be great to have Sonic in it. But that would really involve Sega and Nintendo's management, it's nothing to do with me!"[30] Adding to the controversy fans have over whether he will be in is Best Buy with images of sonic in an ad for Brawl.

but then again this is also why Snake wasn't in Melee either...

You guys were right on Petey being a boss. And also the branching story paths was something I was hoping for.
Maybe if you play as Mario or Kirby, you get this story with Petey as the first boss of Subspace Emissary.
And then other characters are grouped together with different branching storylines as well.
Judging from screenshots of the Subspace Emissary post, I'd say Link and Yoshi are grouped together... possibly Samus and Snake.
