Meanwhile, with the other favorite couple, Van was waking up to a rather sore back. "Agh, I don't know if it was the bed or what, but my shoulders are killing me..." he said rubbing his shoulders.

Mala moaned softly, just waking up. She sat herself up, looking rather groggy as she rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands. "Van? Is something wrong?" she asked sleepily.

"Yeah, my back's killing me..." Van said rolling his shoulders a bit and rubbing them, thinking he was just tense or something when he felt something that made him jerk his hand away. "...s**t...." he said putting a hand to his face. On his shoulders were two small bumps, about the size of a child's fist, as if something was trying to break out.

Mala looked concerned now, not so much as sleepy as she did before. "Van? Honey? Is something wrong?" she asked again, sounding rather worried at this point.

"...I'm getting demoted..." Van said rather grimly as he turned to climb out of bed. "Like I said, at the end of a month, I'd either get my powers back, or get demoted, and apparently I'm getting f*cking demoted...Angels are right below gods in rank, so you'll probably hear me scream out in utter pain any second now once a nice pair of fluffy wings bursts out of my back..."

"What?" Mala asked in disbelief. "Oh, honey! I'm so sorry!" She reached over to lightly hug Van, hoping to comfort him at least a little. "Is there something you want to do about it? Or are you fine with this?" she asked softly.

"No, normally this wouldn't be that big a deal if it weren't for one tiny snag..." Van said as he hugged Mala back for comfort. "Angels are basically the gods' servants, slaves, whipping boys, gophers, whatever you want to call them, it's obey or get wiped off the face of reality." he said with a sigh. "As much as I hate it, if Atius asks, I've got to drop everything and go tend to his every whim."

Mala froze. "...WHAT?!" she exclaimed, looking rather pissed now. "I don't care if anything happens to me, I'll murder the b*****d if he goes too far!" she exclaimed furiously, tightening her grip on Van a considerable bit. "To the gods, I might just be some mortal, but I swear I'll give them hell!" She soon loosened her grip on Van and asked, "Are there any special loopholes that can save you?"
