Acacia was happy to hear that he could actually read the book because a book you couldn't read was really rather useless. She didn't understand why anyone would combine two languages that conflicted however, the author must have been a very strange individual indeed. She was overjoyed when he accepted the invitation to coffee but didn't have a place in mind luckily close by was a nice little cafe her brother had taken her to once, because Meggie saw the cake in the window and wanted some. "Great I have just the place in mind, unless of coarse you have a particular place you'd like to go to." She was beaming, it didn't matter to her where they went really.

Not at all.
He said with a grin, closing the book again and sticking it back in his pack. His little chickie seeming most contempt to perch itself on his shoulder and zone off.
Its sad to admit, but I dont really know this town that well. It would be an honor to follow you.
He quite meant it to. He promptly zipped the bag shut, gave the chick a pet on the head and he was ready to crowd surf with Ms. Acacia. It was quite busy int he market today, though with the scent of fresh flowers on the air, and the sound of dozens of little chickies from that pushy robot chirping it was beautiful too. And with a bright smile, from ear to ear Maximos followed.

Acacia placed the chick in her shirt once again making sure it had room to breath as they set out down the market, she was pretty sure where the cafe was but Latent was a little like a maze. She was worried about losing Maximos and kept glancing to make sure he was still close by. "He was a Couatl." She told him, it seemed out of the blue but she was really answering the question that he had almost asked before. "My father was I mean." She explained as she glanced at him, she hid her reptile heritage very well, in fact you had to look really close to see her fangs, or catch her in an off mood to see her scales.

Maximos was very hard to lose though it was hard to tell by looking at him. The way his eyes darted around the scenery like a kid at a theme park. But he was never lost, she might even catch his eyes a few times she looked back. And see the smile spaced across his lips.
Couatl! Yes, that was the word he was looking for. A couatl...now what was that. He knew it, he had to pause for a moment. His right hand gently tapping his chin.
A winged serpent? I've heard the name but, I dont think I've ever met one. Until today at least!

She looked at the signs of the shops and was glad to see they looked familiar, a sure sign they were headed in the right direction. "Only half one I'm afraid, and I don't even want to know how that happened." Hidden somewhere in her hair were a pair of fox ears, once bright red and very foxy indeed they were now as black as the rest of her hair owing to her brother, he thought they looked better black and refused to restore their original color, they quite plainly gave away the other half of her lineage. Finally Acacia spotted the sign for the Cafe just a little ways ahead. Oweing to the beautiful day Acacia picked a nice table out front in the sunshine, it made her want to stretch out on a nice warm rock somewhere and just snooze the day away.

Maximos slightly cocked his head to the side. He he noticed something odd perking from her hair, but didnt give it much of a second though, not until the wind hit it just right and the ears were entirely visible.
Half Couatl, half Fox?
He slipped into the seat across from her, running a hand through the black streaks along the temples of his navy blue hair. A few zips and he slid the book from his pack and laid it on the table before him.
Care to see what we can find?

Acacia pulled the little chicken out of her shirt after sitting down and placed it on the table next to her then leaned in eagerly to look at the book. "Yes!" She was clearly excited, she always liked seeing interesting creatures, even her little chick seemed curious about the book, it wobbled over to it and pecked it lightly with its tiny beak. "Looks like he wants to see whats inside too."

Excellent!
He smiled so very innocently, one of those pure smiles that beams makes it seem as if nothing could ever make this man frown. He took a moment to pet the top of the little chickies head before his index finger traced the inside of the front cover before gently opening the book. The ancient binding creaking as he stretched it open. A few light waves of his hand cleared a bit of dust off the page, and his finger moved to trace the letters.
C...cag...crag...cor...coi...cou...Couatl! Here he we go.
A slight motion of his finger to the right and he found the page number. Though it looked less like a number and more like a stain on the page. Quickly he flipped through the pages to the section in question.
Now, what did you say your fathers name was Ms. Acacia?

Acacia giggled quietly as he worked his way through the index of the book she leaned in to look at any pictures as he flipped to the pages they wanted. "I didn't." Another big smile and while she was about to tell him the name their waitress came by to take their orders.
"Hi there I'm Judy I'll be your waitress for today! What can I get you two?" Judy was in fact a very lovely woman with dark brown curls, full lips and rosy cheeks, she appeared to be in a fantastic mood herself today. Acacia gestured to let Maximos order first.

Maximos gave her a clever smirk. One of those semi-embarassed and yet amused smirks one gets when they've been victim to very clever wording and enjoyed it completely. It was so hard to find a clever person, the world was full of people that believed themselves wise, someone truly clever...was very hard to find.
The waitress arrived and Maximos' eyes glanced at her for a moment. Just a simple pass of the eyes, his eyes glancing at hers, delivering a short smile before returning to Ms. Acacia.
I will have a regular cup, four lumps, and light please.
And in like turn he waited for Ms. Acacia to order, running his finger down the spine of the book.
Too true. You've got me there Ms. Acacia.

"I'll have the same." Judy nodded happily and went off on her way humming a pleasant little tune as she went to check on other customers. Acacia laughed at Maximos's good humor, she hadn't had a chance to joke with anyone in a while, Meggie was good company but she didn't quite grasp language well enough to joke with. "His name was Rhodes, it means roses because he had blossoms of red on his black scales. Rhodes Damia." She was still smiling but she sounded much sadder all of a sudden, speaking about him in past tense was.. Harder than she thought.

Scales?
Maximos said slightly cocking his head to the side.
I would guess your father wasnt able to...blend in, as you were?
As he waited for her to respond, he slid his finger down the page scanning for that name, gently repeating the name under his breath. He lifted the book so that its cover rested on his left arm, while his right was used to flip through and scan down the pages. A pale left index finger rested on the spine of the book.
Rhodes..rhodes...
He felt it way before he looked up and saw it spread across her face. His right arm twitched, shaking his placement, his left hand being used as something of a bookmark while his right shut the book. It was one of the flaws of being able to grasp souls, your open to the fluctuations in there nature like changes in temperature. Sadness felt dull, like a damp day during or directly after the rain.
He looked up with a sort of apologetic look on his face.
I'm sorry Ms. Acacia, we change the subject if you like. I wouldnt want to drudge up any bad memories...

"He was able to use magic to conceal his appearance." Acacia looked at the back of her left hand, letting a few glossy black scales appear in stark contrast to her pale skin, she had gotten pretty good at hiding her scales but she wondered if she wasn't really hiding from herself. She was pulled back into the present away from her self reflection by Maximos' sudden apology as if he could tell she had become sad, her bright violet eyes darted up to look at him and still smiling sadly she shook her head. "Its not bad memories its just.. He lived for a very long time and I sort of felt he would be around forever but he passed away not that long ago and I wasn't permitted to go and pay my respects. The rest of his kind does not consider me to be one of them." She moved her hand to stroke her chick on the head with one finger and a small question nagged at her. "How did you know my mood changed?"

Foolish prejudices.
Maximos' glove right hand tightened into a fist, the black leather audible squeaking under his tense grip. His head shook from side to side as his eyes sunk down.
The shame of it...my apologies on your loss...
Her question seemed to bring him directly out of his memory. The smile spreading back across his lips as his eyes met hers. He opened his balled right hand, wiggly the fingers as if to present the hand and then brought it across his face to point at his right eye. The being white, in stark contrast to his left eye, which was black. It wasnt the eye as a whole that was black however, just the cornea.
Just a few gifts, one for being an "excellent" employee.
The sarcasm in his voice was clearly audible.
And one for my hubris, in attempting a spell without researching it first.
He lowered his hand gently back to the table, the arm twitching twice. He had to watch his wording here, there was really no way to say, "My arm would love to devour your soul, and because of that I can taste it, and feel it..." without making things uncomfortable, so he went with a meeker version.
While I can see it, my hand could sort of feel the change, like a change in temperature due to...
He paused for just a second, before waving the hand, as if erasing the thought.
...its very boring, I wont bother you with all that.
He said with a grin.

Acacia was the sort of young lady who's overall lack of expirience in the world led to an almost uncontrollable curiosity which then often led her into dangrous or akward situations. When Maximos indicated to his eyes she just had to get a closer look at them but rather than interrupt him while he was talking she waited until he was finished before standing up and leaning over their small table for a closer inspection. So close he would feel her breath on his face and see the intricate details in her eyes, she was close enough to lick him. Studying him with what looked like intense concentration for a few seconds before smiling. "Do you mind if I ask who your employer was?" Suddenly something in the back of her mind told her she was in danger, but she couldn't figure out why.
