Lori was caught with a spoon in his mouth. His eyes went wide a moment, just watching the couple chat. Alright then. He pulled the spoon from his mouth and cleaned his mustache with his lower lip. "I did? Did I?"
Toby took Maia's hand only to give it a squeeze. "I'll be on door duty."
"Yes," Dari replied. That was what 'partners' meant, wasn't it? Maybe he was frightening the tall Elven guy. It happened. He frightened a lot of people. "I'm from... well. Technically I'm from a crashed space ship, but my people are from another planet entirely."
Toby wandered back in, wiggling his fingers. "But nobody will ever believe you~"

"You did. Come look at the cake I made," Maia directed Lori's attention to the cake on the counter. "I think I did alright on this," she said. "I followed the recipe." And didn't accidentally double it like she had the frosting. "Did you invite everyone?"
From the look on Luca's face, it was clear he DID believe Dari, and was fascinated. "Really?"

"Oh that looks nice." It looked like a cake. Apparently someone had taught her how to frost, though, because it was far better than he might have done. Plus the frosting was a pretty color. "What flavor is it? Mmhm! Yeah. Everyone who matters, anyway. I brought my boyfriend." He gestured back toward Luca. She probably already knew that.
Dari smiled and nodded. "Yes. Technically I am a composite being. My people are basically sentient fluid with an outer membrane once you have the right components."
"He can see in four dimensions," Toby added. He wanted Dari to have a friend tonight. He wanted him to have someone to chat with while he himself had to host the damn thing. Luca seemed promising.
"Yes. That is also true."

"Chocolate," Maia smiled at him. "Toby said he liked all sorts of flavors, but then he said he likes chocolate..." She paused and looked around. "You brought Luca?" she asked. She looked into the dining room, spotting the redhead talking to Dari.
"He's making a friend."
With every word, Luca grew more interested. He took Dari's hand, studying it. "How do you move?" He asked. Liquids generally couldn't walk around. In four dimensions? "What's that like?" he sat down. "Lori said there'd be games. You should play one with me."

"I hope so. He seemed kind of nervous," Lori said quietly so Luca wouldn't hear. Dari would, but that poor b*****d heard everything.
"Changes in pressure," Dari said. He released the pressure in his hand and it became a hand-shaped jiggly mass. Luca could squish it membrane-to-membrane if he so chose. "It's like seeing in four dimensions. It's impossible to explain. Imagine a person who cannot see the color red and try to explain it to them." He smiled and watched his hand. "There will be games. Nobody else is here yet, and I cannot be seen from outside." Usually the blinds in the front were closed.

"He'll be fine," Maia assured Lori with a smile. "I think everyone's tried the frosting now, it's probably alright." She bent down to scoop up Seamus. "C'mon kitty, let's go see Toby."
Luca was fascinated, to say the least. "Changes in pressure help you move?" he asked, astonished. Who would've guessed? This was one clever species, to have evolved in such a way. "Well, after everyone comes. Tell me more about yourself."

Lori watched Maia leave and then went to the dining room with his bowl of frosting and sat down. He gave Luca a smile, and shared a nod with Dari.
"Yes. It was difficult to learn at first. My people were not...this shape." He gestured up and down his body. "This is purely for the comfort of my peers. I once was a pool of fluid in a beaker." His eyes opened just a little wider then.
"No, no, I wouldn't mind talking now! I just think we should wait for the others to play games."

Luca gave Lori a smile, reaching for his hand. Wait. What? So what shape were they? Could Dari change his shape? Was he unique among his species? Fascinating!
"You've certainly grown since then," the elf observed. "Oh, really? Alright!" He beamed around the room. "What are your hobbies?'

Lori smiled back and took Luca's hand, and went about continuing to eat his frosting. He was sure this conversation would be interesting. Dari had already been people-shaped by the time he arrived.
"I have. We eat to grow and develop, not for pleasure or survival. ...I suppose development can be considered a means for more likely survival? Hm. Hobbies." Dari thought a moment. "I play video games. And I paint. What about you?" He tilted his head and smiled. He liked this guy. Not only was he now afraid, he was actively interested.

"I sing," Luca admitted. "And I read a lot. Actually, that's how I met Lori. I work at the library in the next town over. I found these books and..." He looked to Lori and smiled. "Do you have a favorite game? I don't play really..."

Lori perked a bit. Luca sang? He didn't say anything, though. He didn't want to interrupt. He was well aware that Dari didn't have many friends. He smiled back when Luca started their origin story and nodded.
"He looked at 'em. He's the language guy," Lori said, gesturing with the spoon.
Dari nodded. "They're very interesting. Ah, games. No, I don't think that I have a favorite. People sleep for six to eight hours on average, and I don't sleep at all. I have to amuse myself somehow."

An alien who was a semifluid and an expert in languages. "Really?" he asked. "Could you translate them? Oh. Is it secret?"
Not sleeping had to be rough. Luca knew he'd become bored if he had to stay up eight hours by himself.

"I can only read as much as you. I'm no cryptologist. I was able to supply a couple of translations, though. It's not a secret, exactly. It's just not something we want to make public. I have an eidetic memory, though. It makes translations easy."
Plus his girl-voice was horrifying, Lori thought.

Luca was clearly disappointed. No translation? What did those mysterious words mean? Not even an alien had been able to figure it out, and he was their language guy.
"Interesting." When would the other guests arrive? Then they could play a game.

As if on cue, there was another burst of hellos and an open door.
"Oh...boy!" Toby could be heard saying, "We're gonna get drunk!" He came back with a bottle of Grey Goose and motioned to the black-haired bearded man that appeared. "Luca! This is Luca! Luca, this is Luca, and you know Lori, and this is my girlfriend Maia, and you know Dari."
The usual hellos started, hands shaken, happy greetings, and the party had begun.
