"I suppose. I try not to think too much." He stood and stretched. "Back home I can't say that I had much of a life. I had dreams, though. And people I cared about. I miss them." He looked out on the water, trying to imagine what they must be up to now. He hoped they were all well. Did they ever think of him?

"I'm also bothered about all the time I'm left with. Back home I was almost always busy. I had work and other responsibilities. Here... I've never felt more lazy and frustratingly bored."

"I miss my family, too." Even the ones she didn't always get along with. They were still there in the back of her mind, sitting in her psyche with reminders of her mother's chicken and parsley soup and the ink stains on her father's hands when he came home from work in the afternoon. There was little she could forget- but even less that she would allow herself to consciously remember.

"Finding something to do only helps for a while- especially if it's something you're not completely sure of. ..So when you do find something, make sure it's something you really feel responsible for- not something just... to do for doing. It will make a difference." It was quite a speech for the little woman, and she seemed emptied by it, drained as she blinked at Lucas.

Lucas smiled softly at her. "I hope I do find something like that. You too."

"Thanks." Then was the case of lasts: one last stroke of the now-calm dog, one last sigh before she crawled to her feet- then a last, long look out at the expanse of blue sea touching a more infant-blue sky. Only then did she look at Lucas with another smile. Thank god that there were sane people amongst the islanders. She'd known that the other lab techs couldn't be right- they weren't all 'beasties'.

"Well, I should get back. I'm starting to tan." It was a small joke, and a small smile, but it was all the mirth that Bia usually surrendered.

Reuben stood up with Bia and looked between the two bipeds, then started to wander off again.

Lucas' smile widened a little more at her joke. "Okay, then. I'll see you around."

"Bye." A simple goodbye- but Bia was pleased- and it showed on her face as she slipped back into the trees and off towards the village.

"Bye!" He called after her.

Once she had gone, Lucas spent a little longer with Reuben on the beach, running and trying to teach him fetch. When Lucas realized the game was just not clicking with the dog, he decided to call it quits.

"Come on, Sandwich. Let's go back." He laughed, collected his shoes and returned to his duplex.

[New RP]

Spending all of his time around the village was starting to get at Gaius, who'd found the wanderlust he'd developed after arriving on the island only growing stronger after his change. The same walls every day, the same circles of buildings... It was tedious.

So, in the late afternoon, Gaius kicked off his shoes, donned a pair of swimtrunks and a towel, and went down the long path to enjoy the tropical beach. He left his sandals and towel on the sand and went on down, splashing into the warm waters. Once he was waist-deep, Gaius took a deep breath and dunked his head under, thoroughly soaking himself, and resurfaced, shaking his head back and forth, shedding water everywhere. He let out a deep sigh of contentment and sank back in the water, squishing his toes in the wet sand. What a glorious feeling...

After his encounter with Nita, Lucas continued on with Reuben at his side. He had enjoyed his time down at the beach from the other day, so he decided to stop by there again to relax. Maybe even take another stab at teaching Reuben how to fetch.

As he arrived he noticed someone splashing around in the water. From a distance he thought the man was one of the few unchanged people left on the Island. But as he drew closer he began to notice a few unusual features, namely the two things protruding from his back.

"Hello!" Lucas called out to him. Reuben barked and ran to the edge of the water.

Gaius looked up, hearing the greeting first, but what he saw was the little dog coming at him. The eager little animal brought an instant smile out of Gaius, who squatted in the water and held out a hand for the dog to sniff. Then, he finally looked up and spotted Lucas. Like himself, it was easy to miss the changed features at first, but the ears and the nose were clear tells.

"Hey there!" Gaius returned with a friendly wave. "I don't think we've met before, have we? Normally I'd say I'm good at recognizing faces, but on this island that doesn't really help!" He laughed, in high spirits from the outing.

Lucas chuckled. "Yes, for certain. But no, we haven't met. I've met mostly females since I arrived." Aside from Ambrose, Gaius really was the only other male Islander he'd come across. "My name is Lucas. Lucas Wickham. Forgive me for not coming over to greet you, but I'm not quite dressed for swimming."

Reuben licked the other man's hand and stood up on his back paws, his front ones leaning against Gaius. He was loving the attention, his tail wagging excitedly.

"And that you have there," Lucas gestured, "is Reuben."

"Mostly girls? So that's where they've been hiding!" Gaius laughed jokingly and took a couple steps towards the shore so he wouldn't have to shout so much, bringing Reuben along with him. "I think I've only seen two... ah, three total. Most of the people were guys."

He stopped a couple yards from Lucas, standing about ankle-deep in the surf, and whiped a bit of multi-colored hair from his face. "I'm Gaius Harper, live over in 62. Been here a... wow, over a month!" The realization surprised Gaius. "Didn't realize it'd been that long..."

The incistant dog was rewarded with an ear scratch as Gaius bent down to love on him. "Hehe, you're a good boy, aren't you Reuben? You know, I've always wanted a dog, but living in an appartment in the city made that kinda impossible..." He looked up at Lucas. "Did you bring him with you? If you did, I'm kinda envious, it'd be nice to have a friendly face from outside the island!"

He laughed. "It's sounds like you've met more people than me, though. I haven't really been out much." With Nita now, that brought the total people he'd met to five. "I've only met four girls. And I've just learned I've been here for two months." Lucas rubbed the back of his neck.

Reuben presented Gaius with a nice sloppy lick across the cheek once he was within range of his face.

"Actually, he's not mine. He belongs to another person named Emelyn. I'm taking care of him for now. I also lived in an apartment, but I could at least keep a pet turtle. I left her behind, though." He slipped his hands into his pockets.

Two months... but he still looked mostly human. That relieved Gaius. Maybe, maybe he'd have more time to hang on...

"Yeah, I guess I tend to run into people when I'm working outside... Mostly people wandering around the village."

He laughed at the lick and winced at the same time, pushing the enthusiastic dog back down as he stoo up properly, his soggy tail dripping behind him. "That's nice of you to take care of this little guy... hope your friend's doing okay?"

He tilted his head at Lucas. "Where are you from, anyways? I mean, before the island."

Lucas adjusted his glasses. While they spoke he tried to figure out what animal the labs had chosen for this person, but at the same time he didn't want to look like he was examining him. "Work outside? What do you do?" He was curious. This man sounded like he had something to keep him busy. That was currently something Lucas was looking for for himself. Though, if it was hard manual labor, that really wasn't up Lucas' alley.

"Yes, I hope so, too. I don't think she'll be in the labs for much longer."

He thought back to his home. "I'm from Michigan. What about you?"
