Kasiya quickly emptied out her dirty clothes into her laundry basket, and went about packing fresh, clean ones. All this packing and unpacking was making her pretty skilled at it, and she found she could squeeze in a few extra things now that she was fairly practiced at this. She slung her backpack over her shoulder and looked around her room. It felt odd that she rarely slept here anymore, and she realized that she didn't miss her own bed as much as she initially thought she would (except for those nights that were spent camping out on the hard, cold ground rather than in a Pokemon Center). She shut the door behind her as she left the room, and practically ran down the stairs. "All ready," she announced loudly, looking around for Keegan. "Hope I didn't take too long," she added, spotting him sitting on the couch. "We could pack up a lunch before we go. My mom always keeps the fridge fully stocked, so there should be some good things to eat in there," she went on, dropping her stuff on the ground and skipping off to the kitchen. The prospect of starting a whole new adventure was quite exciting, and Kasiya hummed to herself happily as she packed some fresh and dried fruits, some bread and various other goodies she found around the kitchen. She filled up a few bottles for water as well, and set about the new task of adding these items to her backpack. "I think I'm all set," she said, nodding to Keegan. "Ready to head out?"

It was impossible not to admire Kasiya's energy. It seemed like she had enough for the both of them, bouncing out of the room to gather up some food to take on the road. "Sounds... fine," he chuckled, leaning back in his seat and putting both hands behind his head. The couch was absurdly comfortable, and for a moment he felt almost as though he'd fall asleep if Kasiya didn't hurry. He forced his eyes back open as Kasiya was about finished with her packing, and was quick to pull himself from the couch of comfy doom. "Yeah, ready as I'll ever be," he nodded, rubbing his hands together. He couldn't help but feel excited about the gym battle, and each time he thought of it, it seemed to rekindle the flame inside of him.
He made sure he hadn't left anything behind and slipped his shoes back on. "I'll wait for you outside," he told Kasiya, and slipped out the front door. The tangy sea air greeted his nostrils, and he looked around, thinking about the last time he'd been here. In reality, it had only been yesterday, but two trips by sea had made it feel like it was a lot longer. He reached into his pocket and let his fingers clasp around the Thunder Badge that lay within. Its edges were pointed, much unlike the badges from Hoenn he'd obtained already. He remembered exactly what the Heat Badge looked like, and in his mind's eye he could picture the Lavaridge Gym emblem posted above the spot where Flannery usually sat while she awaited challengers.

Rex met Ky's eyes with a questioning look, one that Ky had expected. "Why does this guy know my name?" he thought, tilting his head to the side. Eventually, he nodded and Ky smiled.
"Good, nice to meet ya," Ky said with an awkward tone in his voice. "Um, I was wondering... well, your trainer, Ray, he... he wanted me to..." Ky began to flush. He hadn't expected this to be difficult. Nonetheless, Rex looked up curiously. Rex didn't really care about what Ray wanted, but he wanted to hear what this guy wanted to say.
Ky sighed. "Ray wanted me to train you," he said bluntly, looking away afterwards. In truth, he expected that Rex would be frustrated. Why would a Pokemon wanting so badly to escape from his trainer want a new one? To his surprise though, he felt a small tug on his shorts. Looking back, he saw that Rex was irritated.
"Tot... Totodile totodile," he said incomprehensibly, though he pointed around in a notable fashion. He pointed to himself, then at the yard. Then he pointed over towards the fence and shook his head. Ky smiled again, hoping he had understood correctly.
"The old man and lady don't want you to stay here, Rex. The old man told me that himself. I know it's all of a sudden, but Ray asked me to take care of you," Ky explained, stopping to think. He then brought his finger up to signal an idea. "We can take it slow if you want. I know you don't like battling... um... but we don't have to rush. Uh... I dunno..." he said, looking away again.
Rex looked away as well, but not in a rejective fashion. Instead, he brought up his small claws to scratch his chin, pondering. Then, seeking Ky's attention, Rex tugged at his shorts again. "Tot, totodile toto... Totodile totodile, totodile tot," he explained, this time pointing at Ky's belt while shaking his head violently back and forth.
Ky took a moment to figure this out. "You... don't want to fight. I know, I know, um..." Ky said, but stopped when he noticed Rex was disagreeing. As if clarifying, Rex ran over and tapped one of Ky's Pokeballs. "You... don't want to be in a Pokeball?" Ky guessed. Rex nodded. "Oh, well... sure! No problem! Is that it?" Ky said with a smile. Having been understood correctly, Rex smiled as well. "This just might work," Rex thought.

Crenu picked up a random rock and started paying it aroudn in his hands, pressing hard against teh jagged edges. His training was getting him nowhere, it was as fruitless as it had been before the battle with Whitney. His pokemon were getting stronger, but they were not learning anything. Battle practice against themselves was not enough to fully train his pokemon for battle and help them think in ways that they couldn't even imagine. He wanted them to think like he did, and he wanted to widen his own range of strategy and tactics. But it was useless to do things like this, he was goign in circles by training the same way with no variation. "Damn it!" He clenched the rock tightly in his hands, drawing a little blood and then chucking it into a clearing. Crenu took several deep breaths and began walking to try and clear his mind, turning the corner in of the house only to find Ky and a Totodile, he seemed to be bonding well with his pokemon, and Crenu could only guess this was a pokemon he had caught recently. "Heh, guess it's all I've got right now." He stood a good distance fry Ky and yelled out. "Hey Ky, you want me to be friendly, have things go back to the way they were! You really think that it will make you happier?"

Ky's ear twitched in irritation. Here he was, having a nice little conversation with Rex, and now Crenu had the nerve to start another pointless debate? Ky closed his eyes. "Tch. And you thought I was meddling," he muttered under his breath. Not wanting to ruin the moment, Ky pat the Totodile's head before he stood and turned around, showing he wasn't trying to ignore Rex. Having been starting to like Ky, Rex simply sat and waited. He wasn't that much of an attention-seeker anyway.
Ky gave Crenu a somewhat dirty look, squinting one eye with a frown as he thought for a decent response. "Of course that'd make me happier!" he yelled back bluntly. "But before I answer your other question, answer this! Is there any point for me to want what I can't have?! If you don't want to be friendly, why should I want you to be?! Now, if you're gunna have a change of heart, be my guest! But otherwise, leave me alone!" Despite how confident Ky felt as his words rang out, he couldn't help but feel a pang in his heart. In all honesty, he did want things back the way they were, so much that it hurt. If Crenu even dared to offer such a thing back, only to strip it all away again, Ky'd never forgive him. It would be too cruel.

"What was that!?" Crenu grinned a little, but maintained a serious expression as he responded. "I must be mistaken, because that sounded like some 'nerve' coming out of little Ky. I don't recall you having much of a spine Ky, but I'm glad to see you've got some confidence in your voice! It almost seems like my leaving has helped you grow up a bit, but you're still just a kid!" Crenu started to laugh, it was a very cold uncaring sound that was almost designed to hurt the people within it's radius. "I left because I was weak Ky, and maybe I still am. If I needed to be rescued by a brat and his guardian, then clearly I haven't reached the level of independent power I've been searching for. I'm missing something Ky, my training is not at it's full potential. Do you know what that is Ky!? A cold dark heart cannot change Ky, not unless it's by a heart that burns with the intensity that will show it a light. I need that light Ky! I'm empty, I'm weak, I'm worthless... I must be stronger than this. But I'm still light years away from you! Do you think you are worthy of my companionship Ky? Do you think you have enough light to clear away the fog in my very soul, can you bring my abilities full circle and realize your own!? IF YOU WAN'T A HAPPY ENDING KY, THEN SHOW ME YOU'RE MIGHT!" Crenu didn't really know what was coming out of his mouth, the words seemed to chose themselves, but he agreed with all of them. He reached for his belt and threw a pokeball several feet in front of him, and as the white light solidified the small tadpole pokemon's blue spherical body took shape.

Kasiya nodded, and finished getting everything ready. She put her shoes back on and stood up, looking around her home one last time. Probably will be a while before I come back here, she thought, feeling a little sad that her mother hadn't been home. Maybe she'll be at the Beach Party, she smiled, and slung her backpack over her shoulder before heading out the door and closing it behind her. She was careful to replace the spare key into its hiding place, and she hopped down the front steps and patted Keegan on the shoulder. "Northbound are we," she said merrily, unable to remove the smile that she wore. She knew the route north of her hometown fairly well by now, and she couldn't help but hope that there were a few trainers mingling about along the way that would be hoping for a battle. It wouldn't hurt to stop at the Pokemon Center in Saffron as well as the shops, especially if they were planning to do some training while they journeyed to Lavaridge.
I wonder how Flannery and Mike are, she thought as they walked, wondering what her friends had been up to since she'd seen them last. Flannery had been tending to her duties as a Gym Leader, and Mike had gone off to find himself an Omanyte fossil. She couldn't help but wonder if he'd actually found one, and her thoughts drifted in and out as they made their way along the north route.

The Seviper closed in far too quickly for Torchic to react fast enough, and she found her tiny body caught tightly in the Pokemon's coils. She struggled to free herself, but found her efforts to be fruitless, and cried out as the snake tightened its hold on her.
"Good job, Seviper! Now use your Bite attack!" Marietta cried, thrusting her hand forward. Jaeshan's mother let out a frightened gasp as the Fang Snake lunged at the tiny orange chick that was ensnared in its coils.
Jaeshan clenched his fists together and grit his teeth. "Fight back with Flamethrower!" he shouted loudly, hoping Torchic would get the attack in before she was struck by those sharp fangs. The small Fire-type opened her beak and exhaled deeply, sending out a stream of flames. Although not as strong as her usual Flamethrower, it did the trick, causing the Seviper to cry out and release its hold on her. The small Torchic scrambled backwards, panting heavily. That had been close!
"Lick attack!" demanded Marietta from her position opposite Jaeshan. "Slow it down!"
Lick...attack? Jaeshan thought, a bit confused. He hadn't really expected a lick to be considered an attack, but as the Seviper once again lunged at Torchic, this time lashing at her with its forked tongue, Jaeshan frowned. Torchic let out a frightened chirp from the attack, but recovered fairly quickly and fought back with another small burst of flames - Ember.

Torchic's aim was definitely improving, and the Seviper hissed and shrieked as the glowing flames licked at its scaly skin. Bright red blisters appeared on its body - Torchic had inflicted yet another burn on her opponent. The Fang Snake hissed angrily after realizing what had happened, and without waiting for an order from its trainer, it tried to strike the smaller Pokemon with another Bite attack. Torchic nimbly hopped to the side, barely avoiding the full attack from her opponent. She felt one of the fangs graze her, and she fearfully hobbled backwards, finally feeling the exhaustion setting into her. Her chest heaved, and she knew she didn't have much left in her.
"Poison Tail!" Marietta cried. "We've almost got it, Seviper! Go!" For a cook, Marietta wasn't a bad trainer at all, and Jaeshan couldn't help but wonder why she wasn't a full-time trainer. Instead of lunging this time, the Seviper lowered its head and lashed out with its long tail. The blade-like appendage glowed with a sinister purple hue, and if one looked close enough, they could see the poison seeping out of it.
Torchic cried out in both fear and pain as she was struck right on by the attack, and as she pulled herself to her feet, she felt her legs wobble. A sudden power surged through her though, and her small body start to glow with an aura that looked much like a heat shimmer. The shimmer soon turned to a fiery glow, and Torchic let out a growl. Torchic's Blaze ability, Jaeshan thought, grinning to himself. "Okay Torchic! It's time to end this! Flamethrower! Give it all you've got!"

Keegan didn't say anything as they finally set to the road, as he was still thinking of how he'd approach the upcoming battle with Flannery. He also had made a small list of items he planned to buy (assuming he had enough cash on hand) once they got to the store. He glanced at Kasiya occasionally as they walked, and he could tell by the way she was eagerly looking around that she was spoiling for a good fight. After losing to her father and those two miscreants on the same day, he figured it would probably do good for her spirit if she could put one in the win column today. He too wouldn't mind having a quick battle or two with some trainers they met on the way to Saffron; the more experience his Pokemon had before taking on Flannery the better. He also knew that she'd changed her Pokemon team around completely, but one thing was bothering him slightly. He stopped walking as they approached a large clearing (oddly enough the same square in which he'd witnessed Kasiya battling with Jaeshan some time ago), and put his hands on his hips.
"Say, do you think it was really such a good idea to send all of your strongest Pokemon back to Professor Oak's lab? I mean, I'm not saying anything will happen, heaven forbid, but shouldn't you have kept Ariel or Shocker with you just in case?"

Torchic planted her two clawed feet firmly on the grassy ground and threw back her head. Flames were already leaking out of her beak as she thrust her head forward, beak spread open wide. A mighty stream of flames burst forth, completely engulfing the Seviper's long, slender body. It howled and hissed from the intensity of the heat, and when the flames finally died down, the Fang Snake lay in a crumpled heap, blackened patches covering its body. Panting heavily, Torchic staggered a bit before she too toppled to the ground, exhaustion having finally won over her. Jaeshan didn't even really stop to see if the Seviper was really down for the count or not before he dashed over to her and carefully took the tiny little chick into his arms. "You were amazing," he told the young Pokemon fondly. "Simply amazing!" Torchic opened her eyes and looked up at her trainer, and chirped softly before closing them once again. "Amazing," he repeated, hugging her gently to his chest.
"Amazing indeed!" came the impressed voice of his father. Jaeshan looked up at the man and smiled. Having the approval of his parents seemed to make all the difference in the world.
"Most impressive, Young Master," Marietta nodded, having recalled her Seviper and ventured over to Jaeshan's side. "My Seviper is pretty tough; it's not often he gets taken down so easily." She then took a vial from her pocket and handed it to Jaeshan. "A Super Potion," she told him. "Use it to heal your Torchic."
You think that was easy? Jaeshan thought, but only smiled. "Torchic is one of a kind, I think," he said, stroking her soft feathers gently. "And thank you." He accepted the potion, and set Torchic on his lap. "This will sting a bit," he told her, unscrewing the cap and giving the small bottle a shake. The spray-type medicine was then used to cover her wounds, and as the Potion worked its magic, the small Pokemon's energy was recovered, and soon she was on her feet again, looking perkier than ever.
"That should keep her going until you can get to the Pokemon Center in Oldale Town," the cook told him. "Now, if you'll excuse me, Masters and Mistress, I must start on lunch."

Kasiya had went about ten feet more before she realized Keegan had stopped. As he spoke, she turned to face him, finding that she felt a little offended by his question. While Flash and the other Pokemon with her weren't the strongest in the world, they could still hold their own in battle, and she too placed her hands on her hips and glared at the redheaded boy in front of her. "What's that supposed to mean?" she demanded, finding that she had put more venom into her tone than intended. "Are you saying you don't trust my judgment or something? Or that my other Pokemon are too weak to protect me?"
She didn't know why she suddenly felt so angry; it wasn't that Keegan was trying to upset her or anything. Perhaps it was just her pent-up frustrations about the past two battles, or maybe it was just a lot of built-up frustrations in general - dealing with Mai and Team Rocket, the past fights with Keegan, the resentment that still lingered from finding out about her parents - all mixed together with just a dash of good old teenage angst. She stomped her foot and continued to glare at Keegan, feeling her blood starting to boil. "Well!?"

Keegan took an uneasy step back, surprised by her sudden anger towards him. "Look, I really don't mean anything other than just that. I really don't think it was very smart of you to leave all of your best Pokemon behind, that's all." He folded his arms and stared right back at her, hoping to soften the hard glare that she'd plastered to his face. "There's really no need to get so angry, and I don't exactly like being yelled at for no real reason."
Anger was one of those dumb things that was very contagious, and as he stood there, he soon found himself glaring right back at her. It wasn't unlike her to make rash decisions like that, and while he could understand the need to train Levi and the other Pokemon she'd acquired, he didn't think it was very wise to leave them all behind. "You don't seem to mind meddling in my business when I'm trying to do something, but you can't stand it when someone does it to you, can you?" he practically spat at her. He sighed heavily, clenching and unclenching his fists in an attempt to calm himself. "Look, let's just get going, all right? You can prove your Pokemon are capable of handling themselves while we're on the road. There's no sense fighting about it now." It surprised him a bit that he was the one attempting to diffuse the fight, but he stuck with it. "Let's just get to Saffron before lunch, okay?"

Kasiya didn't say anything right away, she just continued to glare at Keegan. She could feel her shoulders shaking, and his words stung a bit. Meddling? Interfering? That wasn't how she saw it, and she took a deep breath. "Th-this is different," she stammered, but soon realized that the words had been thought and not actually said. "I think my Pokemon are just fine!" she finally managed. "And if you don't believe me, well then, let's just prove it right here and now!"
Her hand was still shaking as she grabbed the first Pokeball from her belt and threw it on the ground. "Let's battle! Three on three! You and me!" Her trembling hand caught the red and white sphere on the rebound, and Flash the Jolteon appeared before her. The Electric-type looked a little confused as to why he was being called out already, but as he caught sight of the human opposite Kasiya, he began to understand. The hairs on his body quickly stiffened and turned to spikes, a signal that the Jolteon was getting geared up for battle. Static electricity began to flow through his agile limbs, and Flash let out a sharp bark, daring Keegan to accept his mistress's challenge.

Having said goodbye to his parents, and being sure that Torchic was well enough to travel, Jaeshan left his hometown for the second time in his life, this time in much better condition. Having both of his parents approve of his new quest to collect Hoenn badges for a while, he felt a bit of a spring in his step as he quickly put Littleroot Town behind him, setting his sights on the gym in Rustboro. It was exactly the same route as he'd just traveled, only this time he'd be taking it in reverse. He almost wished he'd asked his father to help him pay for a bicycle as he trudged up the path and through some tall grass on his way to Oldale, but Jaeshan decided against it. He'd gotten this far on foot, and until he found other methods of travel (i.e. by means of a Flying-type Pokemon) he'd continue to travel by foot.
The route he followed wasn't overly interesting, more or less like it was when he'd came through here last night. The only difference was that it was now daylight, and there were young trainers going through their morning routines. A few of them eyed him curiously, but none approached him. Jaeshan wasn't sure if it was because he didn't really look like a trainer, or the kids just didn't want to challenge an older trainer to battle. It was of little consequence; after all, he'd just managed to defeat Marietta. Having won his first in the last 3 battles was uplifting enough, and he didn't need to go around picking on little kids to make himself feel better. Rustboro's gym badge will be the perfect pick-me-up, he thought as he walked, thinking that perhaps he'd collect three Hoenn badges before he'd go back to Kanto and get more of them.
