Starts here --->I was really surprised on the amount of people she killed off in this book. I mean I know that there was a war going on, and some people had to die, but really... did she need to kill off as many as she did? What was the point of killing off Fred, Lupin, Tonks, Colin Creevey, Crabbe, Dobby, Hedwig and Mad Eye Moody?

Dobby's death was really heart wrenching, and I can understand why she did it. But really, why the others? What are your takes on why she killed who she did?

There was one thing I missed. Where was Harry putting the Elder Wand? He said he was putting it back where it came from but where the heck was that? xd

Starts here --->Dumbledore was the master/owner of the Elder wand after he defeated Grindelwald. When Dumbledore died, he was entombed with the wand. Voldemort broke into Dumbledore's tomb to steal the Elder wand from him. After Harry became the master/owner of the wand and defeated Voldemort, he told Ron and Dumbledore's portrait that he was gonna put the wand back in tomb with Dumbledore! 3nodding

Ooooooooooh, I see now! I thought he meant he was going to put it back where it came from in the very beginning...like when it was first made. That's why I was so confused. xd

"You scored as a Luna Lovegood." Holy cow, someone give me a new personality, quick! gonk The sad thing is, I predicted it would tell me I'm like Luna. eek

I finished the book. Like Mala, I've always loved Snape. I'm so glad he turned out be a good guy! I didn't see how he could really be evil. His reason for protecting Harry came as a total shock to me, though. I didn't see that coming at all!

I'm also disappointed that Harry's eyes didn't come into it. Rowling has said that Harry having his mother's eyes was very important but it turns out that Dumbledore just used them to taunt Snape with.

I always expected Voldemort's death to be horribly anti-climactic - and it was. xd

I almost threw the book away in disgust when Hedwig died. War isn't pretty, people don't act rationally, and we can't choose who dies and who lives in life. But did she really have to illustrate this with Hedwig!?

On the subject of Fred's death...I'm not too sure Harry was really impacted all that much. After everything he'd been through, all the adrenaline and shock would have kept him isolated from the grief. Then he escaped into the Pensieve and had a whole new mess to deal with.

There was one thing I missed. Where was Harry putting the Elder Wand? He said he was putting it back where it came from but where the heck was that? xd

OMFG, it didn't register that Aberforth's patronus was a goat! lol
Yay for discussion! whee

Snape love FTW. heart Oh, yes. Also, I realized this morning - now that Snape's loyalties have been definitively established, I can officially say that Snape is my favourite good guy character ever. From books, movies, whatever. ...Granted, the competition isn't too stiff, since I'm not normally a big fan of the good guy types, but Snape would still be my favourite even if I did. He's just that awesome.

I was disappointed with the eye thing, too. I was really expecting all the references to his Lily-like eyes to play a bigger part in the end. I mean, there definitely is a point in how the eyes were probably driving Snape up a wall the whole time... And it did come in when Snape's last request was for Harry to look at him, as if he could see Lily's eyes one last time. All the same, though, I was expecting more plot relevance.

Yeah, Voldie-death was a bit of a let down, but I'm not sure there was any good way to write a death that wouldn't have been. I suppose they'll try to make up for it with tons of flashy special effects come Movie 7.

And with you on Hedwig. I had to go back and read that bit over just to make sure I wasn't going insane. Hedwig deserved, at the very least, a little more mourning. Or not getting offed in the first place... But I guess she would've been "inconvenient" to deal with during the whole camping-out storyline.

Deathstick already covered... So I'll just emphasize how hard I laughed when Aberforth whipped out his goat Patronus. xd

I think, in part, she wanted to make it a bit more "realistic" and darker by having a decent number of deaths. So some people were probably, as much as anything, there to get the body count up. After all, it would seem pretty cartoony if these big, bad, impressive villains never managed to kill anybody, or only killed minor characters. No "red shirts" in the Potterverse.

Fred... I kind of mentioned my thoughts on Fred. She probably felt obligated to off a Weasley and throw a little more in Harry's face to push him over the edge. Although, I do agree with what xane said about Harry being in such a state of shock that it didn't really hit him the way it might have under other circumstances. All the same, I think she was trying to establish not only that the Big Final Battle was indeed dangerous - and would, thus, claim some lives - but also set up a sort of hopeless, grim atmosphere for Harry's Dead Man Walking scene.

Lupin and Tonks... I don't know. I really don't. I felt like that was too tacked on. I suppose for the above reasons, though. I also suspect that she wanted to draw the Marauders generation to a conclusion by having them all out of the picture to symbolically pass the baton wand on to Harry's generation. Now the group can all be together in death. ... If they let Peter hang out with them, anyway.

Hedwig, I think, was a convenience factor. She would've introduced too many problems having her with the group while they were camping and might have provided an alternative solution in certain circumstances and she didn't want to give the kids that extra tool. Then again, they had Hermione's magic bag and the tent, so it wasn't like they were roughing it. They had plenty of advantages to ease the process along. I dunno.

I think she and Moody firstly served the purpose of starting the book off on a grim note to sort of shock the reader into realising what a bad situation has fallen on the Wizarding world. The death of the previously nameless Muggle Studies teacher just wasn't going to impact the readers like known, beloved characters dying, and George's ear - though dearly missed - wouldn't serve by itself to make Voldie's ambush seem very threatening.

Moody may have been another "make the situation worse by taking away advantages" bit. Kind of like Dumbledore. Harry had to have a lot of his old support system stripped away so that he (and his chums) could really come into their own.

Dobby... Sort of the "got to make it look serious" aspect, I suppose. After all, they were just captured by some of the biggest of the Big Bads and it would make them look pretty lame if nobody died. It would have the readers wondering why anybody's really worried about Bella & Co. if they can't even take care of a bunch of school kids who've been stripped of their wands. Throw the poor Death Eaters a bone with a disposable elf. ... Poor Dobby. crying He was obnoxious sometimes, but overall I liked him. He was good people. The mourning was a pretty good scene, too.

Colin. That one made me kind of sad in a, "But he was just a hyperactive little kid! gonk " way. Suppose he was just another background character to add to the body count in the final battle. Throw in a familiar name, make it seem a bit more real.

Or, alternative theory: Jo killed them all because she was feeling bloodthirsty. She wasn't going to need them any more, seeing as this is the last book, so why not just off the characters who won't be needed? gonk

Y'know who I feel sorry for? I feel sorry for those poor cashiers who Hermione snuck money into their tills. Having worked in retail, I know what happens when your drawer is over. It's just as bad as having your drawer short! I know she was trying to be nice, but she probably got those cashiers yelled at or sacked. It really would've been kinder to just nick the food and not pay for it. sweatdrop

Or at the very least, sneak into the manager's room, leave the money with a note saying "Sorry! I stole some food and I'm leaving this here to pay for it. I deeply apologize for my behavior."

Yay...secrets! Anyway..so I finished the book in under the week time line I figured. Good stuff. The ending makes me want to rp because of how it leaves off and with the characters... Oi. Tears came to my eyes when Dobby died, but I didn't shed. I shed more tears for Fred, even more so than Dumbledore in the sixth book. I think it's safe to say that the twins were my favorite characters. And Lupin..didn't make me cry at all but still quite sad because he left his kid all alone.. sad God..it's not the same without Fred. I seriously cried quite hard. When I see it with the movie..oh man..

I'm sure since this is the last book/movie that James Phelps is probably excited to have a death scene. Not so much Oliver since he only loses an ear and doesn't get a death scene like is brother! I know Daniel Radcliffe asked J.K. if he died in the book. She said she whispered to him that he gets a death scene. The actors must be looking forward to doing the 7th movie! whee

I was talking about the initial reaction.I would've gotten a bit insulted she offed me and not my brother. "Why me?", y'know? Then I would've started bragging about having a death scene.... while he only gets an ear death scene. xd

Jobs after Voldemort:

JKR has said that Both Harry and Ron end up as Aurors, but they revolutionize the field. They are both experts and at the top of their field.

She also says that Hermione is at the top of her field in Magical Law Enforcement.

I really wish I could watch this interview with JKR, but Nabs-mom hasn't finished the book, so I can't watch it with her around. crying

Actually, I still need to watch it. I found and bookmarked it Friday night, but I was too tired to watch. Forgot all about it. sweatdrop

But I did read the summary. Eee. heart I'm just super-excited that she said she'll probably write up an encyclopedia for the series at some point!

--> Harry really becomes an auror!? Good grief, you'd think he would have had enough of dark wizards for a lifetime! lol

--> I want to know how Hermione found her parents and what they said to her once she told them what she'd done. xd

Is that interview online somewhere? I know it was on TV the other night, but I missed 99% of it. My mom watched it even though she's only a few chapters into book 7. Now she's freaking out and trying to weasel spoilers out of me. gonk

From this I was able to see two parts to the interview with Meredith Vierra, but not the Dateline hour-long special.
