"That happens to everyone," Horatio said at Ruka's lost expression. "You can pull it out if you'd like and slice down to the cut and remove the entire piece, or you can move the knife back some and continue as you originally intended. Cutting down would be easier. Continuing would save more of the wood for later." He paused, momentarily distracted, looking for a moment at something that Ruka would not be able to see if she tried, then came back to the present. "It's up to you." He smiled at the vampire. "You're doing a fine job."

Lucretia peeked into the Singing Nymph, which was unusual. The doctor never took her breakfast there, usually eating on her own.

"Um, good morning. May I have a cup of coffee and some eggs on toast?" She sat herself down at the bar, trying to look casual.

"Um..." She looked at the wood, knowing that she had to choose one way or the other. Ruka was completely silent for a good ten seconds, before she said "I think I'm going to continue." With a little, slightly nervous sigh she pulled the knife back a little bit, and then tried again.

"Sure thing." Jackson set about getting out the food, tapping the front of Jelena's dress with the back of a couple of his fingers. "You're going to get this dirty if you hang around here without an apron on." He smiled, half his mouth raised higher than the other as he met her gaze.

"How do you want your eggs?" Jackson turned back to the doctor after a slightly-too-long pause.

Horatio watched her continue for a couple seconds before sitting down behind the counter and starting some of his work. He looked up a couple times between checking dates and adding up costs. "Have a seat." He motioned to a chair against the wall. "Here," he moved over his trashbasket, already holding a decent layer of wood shavings. "You can use this. Pull up a seat."

"Alright, thanks,"she replied with a smile, as she sat down and continued working with the little piece of wood, now landing all the shavings neatly into the trash basket rather than everywhere.

She managed to successfully fix her mistake, though now she took extra care in every stroke, so it was taking her a bit more time than it would have otherwise. However, after only a short time Ruka had managed the very, very, exceptionally rough outline of the cat she wanted. It wasn't bad, for a first try.

"Very nice." He looked up from his work. "You're making a cat?" Jesse looked up at the word, tail thumping slowly against the ground. "You're very good."

Lucretia didn't appear to hear him immediately. She seemed to be looking around for something...? Or maybe it was someone.

"Oh! Sorry, scrambled, please."

"Thank you,"She said, really just beaming at the compliment. She didn't think it was going that well, but...She was trying to feel the knife the way she felt her rapier; like an extention of herself. It was easier when she thought of the knife as simply as really sharp finger.

"I just hope by the time its done, it won't look like a block of wood with paws..."She said, with a little bit of a laugh in her voice. She couldn't help but think that was exactally what was going to happen.

"Try this..." Horatio stood, setting the papers down on the counter and moved over to where Ruka was sitting. He took her smaller hand in his, guiding it along the outer line of the cat's back in a smooth curve, dropping a long shaving from the wood into the basket. "Don't be afraid to make bolder strokes. It's all right to make mistakes."

She watched carefully as he moved her hand, taking note of the feeling of the motion, and the amount of force needed to guide it properly. Certainly, her own cuts had been doing almost nothing in comparison...No wonder the rough shape had taken her so long.

"Ohh..."Said Ruka, as he finished, now some strange sence of comprehension dawining on her. "That will...definately make this easier," she said, smiling happily as she tried it again without his help, but trying to mimic it as best she could.

"Gnergh..." Dee ambled into the Singing Nymph at a time that, to her way of thinking, was way too early. That was before the scent hit her. There were more scents inside the building, of course, but none of them were as bright and and sharply contrasting against everything else than Lucretia's. Dee paused, rubbed her cheek, and smiled slowly. She could be up this early for a meeting with Lucretia.

"Hi, Doc. Isn't it rather unsual of you, to be over here?" Dee grinned, flexing a hand which she had hidden behind her back, trying to ease her nervousness. A few more tense-and-relax, and then she straightened to her full height and stalked inside, plopping down beside Lucretia.

"Coffee please. With all the cream and milk and sugar you can load into it! And whiskey!" Dee grinned widely, not exactly a coffee person (it was much too sharp for her senses) but when needing an excuse to be around...

Lucretia could help but smile, even though a nervous part of her wanted to chase away the smile. What would the others think if she was interested in a werewolf? The enemy, to some humans.
But...I like Dee., a little, but stubborn voice replied.

"I... didn't feel like making breakfast this morning."

"Hold on, let me serve the good doctor first." Jackson slipped the eggs from the frying pan onto a slice of toast already on a plate and stuck the whole thing down in front of Lucretia. He left the counter, going to get Dee's requested drink. "No disgusting combination for breakfast today?"

Horatio went back to his desk, soon finishing not all, but enough of paperwork. He glanced up at where Ruka was still sitting in concentration, brow furrowed as she studied her piece. Some of the necesities of running a store were taken care of. He would have enough time to finish the rest.

Getting up, Horatio moved his chair over so that he could sit next to Ruka, and began finishing up his own figurine in joint silence. Jesse fell asleep and the only sound in the store was the soft scraping of metal on wood as they worked.

Many minutes went by in this comfortable silence, the layer of shavings and small pieces of wood growing in the wastebasket. Horatio had finished detailing the mane and tail of his horse and was adding in the last small designs on the saddle and bags when he started speaking in a low voice into the quiet, almost as though he was talking to Jesse instead of another human, without looking up from what he was doing.

"It's been a long time since I had someone living with me. I moved to Cascade many years ago and bought this property. After the war, land was cheap. There was space for two people to live here, but I said I would keep the extra room as storage. I bought Jesse when the quiet got too lonely." The dog stirred at her name, looking up briefly, then resting her head on her front paws and watching them lazily. "I don't talk to many people in town. The only reason I'm talking to you is because you," he paused, turning the wooden horse around to work on its other side, "you remind me of someone. My younger sister. Did I tell you I have a sister?" He laughed quietly to himself, not expecting an answer. "I doubt anyone in Cascade knows. She must be nearing forty by now. You have her eyes. You both have the same hurt in the back of them." Horatio shook his carving, brushing dust from it. "I don't talk to people. I like my privacy. I wouldn't have taken you in if I hadn't felt the pain in your expression. Don't think I'm giving you a job and a place to stay out of pity, though, because I'm not. You just," he struggled with the words and their meaning for a moment, closely inspecting his piece. "I just knew how you felt. I've seen that look before. That's why I'm telling you this. You're a special girl, Ruka. You have spirit. I don't want you to misinterpret my actions."

The vampire looked up when Horatio started to talk. She listened to what he said, honestly very surprised to hear that he had a sister. Of course, her face fell a little when he mentioned what he had seen in her eyes...She thought she had gotten rid of it. She didn't want to look hurt anymore...

She listened intently, feeling a little glad that Horatio had told her this, though she couldn't help but think then about why she had that look. She didn't want to think about it, but she did...She felt like telling him something too.

"...I...I was supposed to get married. To a human,"She said, wanting to explain the look. She didn't tell people about Ai. Ever. Not after what happened. But...Horatio seemed different. It seemed like it would be okay to tell him.

"...It um...it..."Ruka was trying to figure out how to say it. She had long ago decided if she were ever going to tell anyone, she would simply say 'it didn't work out', but...That didn't work, that wasn't true. "...He died. They ate him,"That was all she could manage to say. The vampire had stopped working on the cat, and was now simply staring at the slightly formed wooden figure.

Horatio gave no response. They sat there for another long minute before he finally stood, still in silence, and placed the finished carving on the shelf next to her.

"Here."

He sighed, putting the small carving knife back in the drawer behind the counter. "Come, Jesse." The dog got up, stretched, yawned, giving a curious soft look at Ruka, then followed Horatio out of the store.
