Wacom's are best. Get one of them.

It depends what you want to do wtih it, babe. I think the Art Discussion would be more helpful than me since I didn't buy my tablet, my parents did. Mine is an A4 sized Wacom.

You dn't need to fork out for something uber expensive. I think a bamboo would be a good choice for a beginner. They're easy to use and they're cheap.

Anyway. Enough with me pretending to know about stuff.

Wow. What bold 'n' bright colors, Kimi-chan~

Hmm... I like the transparency of the foreground or whatever, though personally, I don't like it on the skin.
Do you use seperate layers for the colors?
I'm not sure how to combine the bg with the foreground (unless you did just adjust the transparency and not some other method). But if you colored the skin on a different layer than the other colors, and didn't make the skin transparent, I think that would look good.

Unless of course, she's like, a ghost.... then nevermind. razz

(I also think an item, like the frosting on the cupcake, would look better without the tranparency)

I've actually haven't tried any other brand than wacom for tablets. But the old one we had lasted a long time (I think we must've had that thing for over five years). The only reason we had to replace it was because the tip of the pen was completely worn down, and the tablet was so out dated by then that they no longer sold the type of pen we needed for that tablet.

So yeah... it's good. xDD;;

I think most the tablets I've seen come with just a mouse and pen.
Cost depends on what kind you're getting, and how big.
If you don't have much to spend, I'd recommend getting a small one. I've never tried the bigger ones, but the small one works just fine for me, so I see no reason to go for something really big.

I suppose it depends on what you do... but for the type of art I've seen from you, I wouldn't recommend a large one.
Unless, you-know, you like your tablet to feel more like you're writing on a piece of paper, I guess...

Looking at the website, looks like Bamboo Fun is good for art. Cheap, too. Only about $100 (for the small, which looks to be around the size that I have). ( ^_^ )
I don't remember what my old tablet cost (since my dad bought it). But my new one (I have Graphire 4.0) was about $50. So I think taking into account that the one I have is rather outdated, and had been used, $100 sound reasonable.
(And like I said above, they're good quality and last long)

I duplicated the checkers and set it to addition. The character is... really annoyingly cheery, so I thought bold colours would be best.
It's kind of blinding on some monitors though XD;

I didn't like the checkers over it after looking at it again, so I changed it to this 'n.

Better?
PostPosted: Tue Jun 10, 2008 11:32 am

Well, I liked the checker pattern, but I think you should limit to putting it only in certain places?
Because if you put it everywhere, I guess it just makes her look see-through.

So like I said, maybe if you just take it out of the skin, and some other areas, I think it could look alot better.. ;;

What character is it anyway, Kimi?

Thank you both. -curtsies-
I'm used to drawing in small sketch books. It feels uncomfortable when I have to use regular printer paper. Always too much space.

Now to get some money... I need a job.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 11, 2008 7:11 am

Ew. Jobs.

It's Amu from Shugo Chara. I had to draw her for an Auction I'm in. It was due ages ago |D; But thankfully, I was given more time due to exam failage.

You seems to do an awful lot of auctions, Kimi...?

Personally, I think the checker effect looked really good on her hair 3nodding
And I really like her hands smile

And Razz Beri Sun Shine, I know what you're talking about XD *is used to drawing small as well*

OKAY OKAY OKAY.

User Image

How's THAT?! D8

Mage, I think that's cute. Permission to nitpick?

Alright. I know this is just a structural thing, but structure is VERY important in manga. The first page in a lot of manga is used to introduce the character in a striking way.

Example One.
Example Two.[/url
Example Three.

Both convey the story or at least part of the story in very little. The first page, for some, is the mark of a good story. You need something striking and not too overbearing.

Okay? Okay.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 12, 2008 12:30 pm

That looks good, Kimi! All three versions look nice, actually 3nodding

And thank you for the suggestions! I'll keep that in mind when I introduce the actual main character 3nodding
I wanted to open my manga a bit differently than most other mangas...maybe it was a bad idea? sweatdrop

Bri love, regardless of wether you actually keep saying your art is horrible for attention or not, you should stop.
If you want to become better, that's one thing you need to learn not to do.

I know I sound rude, but I find you do it quite often. You really shouldn't put yourself down.
Just because people don't seem to comment or care, doesn't mean it's bad. Sure, there's always room for improvement, but complaining about it doesn't get you anywhere. Although I think realizing the flaws is the first step to improvement, there's no shame in saying, "Hey, I do like how this looks." regardless of wether there is someone who can do it better.

And if you don't like what you've drawn at all, then trash it. Don't post it online, and don't look at it if it only gives you grief.

Now, in terms of the drawing itself, I think the best advice I could give is to look at some tutorials or How to Draw books.
I'm not an art teacher, so I can't help you with the things you need the most improvement in (i.e. anatomy). I think those skills are something you can only truely learn in a class (Or by close observation, since... I've yet to take an anatomy class either...)

I think it'd also do you some good to look up some type of inking tutorial. Your lines seem rushed and unclean.
Take more care into your lineart. Perhaphs you should use a softer brush, and concentrate on making dark, clean lines, and sharpen up the ends a bit with the eraser tool. They'll make your lines stand out more and not be so flat. In fact, taking more time on your lines can improve the look of the entire picture.

Also, if the program you use allows. Try using more layers.
Preferrably for every new item you color.
Your colors run into each other alot. This adds to the messyness.
The eraser is there for a reason, love. Use it! This isn't tradtional painting. So use the options that make digital painting so different to your advantage.

As for the coloring, again, if you can use more layers, do it.
Your coloring is very messy and uneven. I think part of the problem is because you're taking what you're learning in preschool and trying not to go outside of the lines. But this isn't tradtional coloring, so preschool rules don't apply.
Just get your color, and paint the item you want completely. Don't leave any holes or thin lines. Use a bigger pen size if needed. With layers, you don't have to worry about going outside the lines or over other colors. You can just clean up the places where the color goes over the lines with the eraser, and the color underneath will stay there (so long as it's on a different layer).

Now with shading... well. I'm going to be a butt again and tell you to find some REALLY basic coloring tutorial. Or better yet, take an art class.
I'm not sure you understand light source, and going from light to dark.
A basic coloring class (or tutorial. Although I like classes better as they're hands on, and you can get a real person to help you) will teach you these things, and greatly improve not only your shading, but lines as well.

Overall, regardless of messyness, I think the coloring does look like you put alot of effort into it. It reminds me of an oil painting, and I rather like the effect. : )
You really need to work on your lineart, though. It looks like next to no effort was put into it at all. Especially on the hands. Even if you can't draw hands well, I think you could've atleast tried harder. <:' 3

If this was too much for you, I'm sorry.
I don't judge potential very well (this is why I'm not an art teacher. Haha). I don't expect you to learn all of what I said in a day, or probably even in a year. But patients is key. Especially if you want to reach your full potential (Which, I think, is alot greater than what I'm seeing now).

What Mel said. Please take what she's saying seriously. It's all valuable information.

I'd like to really underline the lineart point though.

Seriously, babe. I know how irritating lineart is and how you just want to get to the colouring, but it the lineart looks bad or doesn't fit the image, then it's not going to look as good as it should.

As Mel said, it's much, much too hard and doesn't have any depth. And how it fades away at the hands? It just looks like lazyness on your part.

I'd suggest using a softer brush and paying more attention to light and shadow. Usually where the shadows are present and colours are more shaded, the lineart should be thicker to support it. That's a technique I use, at least. It works for me.

Anatomy, for another. It's tough. Everyone finds it tough at first, but the longer you try to ignore it, the harder it gets to fix. If you get it down young, you'll find it much, much easier to draw. Pick up an anatomy book or just observe yourself in the mirror to see where limbs end and where joints are in comparison to your body. It'll help.

...

uh... -tries hard to comprehend what was just said-

okay,

well, I want to tell you something about when I do lineart, I now use the pen tool because it it a whole lot neater than my own lines or using the ink tool.

Also, I just decided to line this and colour it after doing a quick sketch using my manican (badddd Idea I noticed)

As for the colouring and layers, no. I am not very good with light sorces and this type of colouring is very new to me. I use a lotta layers (usually about 4 per item) and to tell the truth, I hate making anything below the waist because I feel uncomfortable with it. My original did have the complete handa and even the'r legs, but I didn't think it looked right so I chopped it all off.
