__penguin__ Don't you mean freedom horn? xp I just call it the "horn." Only in the USA (and the UK? I don't know) is the term "French" horn used. In other languages it's just "horn"... le cor, il corno, valtorna.

But what with the valves and all the extra tubing that have been added over the years, the modern orchestral horn is more German than French. If you want to be really picky and get odd looks from your band director, a "French" horn is a natural or valveless horn, seldom played today except for period-style (using instruments and performance techniques contemporary to the composer) performances, and some pieces that call specifically for a natural horn (Dukas Villanelle, Brahms's symphony #...aw, I forgot. I think it's #1 but don't quote me on that. >_< ). /music history nerdiness (Never you mind why a cellist knows so much about horns and horn players. >_> )

Lilangel292 HURRAH! ok so ya um my french horn section leader hastles me about which fingerings to use so should I use b flat or f side? depends on which notes you're playing. i usually switch to Bb horn at the second space Ab and above and for lots of the notes below the low F. though, for some runs and stuff, alternate fingerings can be life savers 3nodding

I play the mello in marching, but im a bassoonist during concert season... so all the cracks about horns being the best, I can't agree. They are awesome, but bassoons are just as good (though they dont sound nice).

Saxophone here (going to Mello for DCI), I've been practicing have a decent tone, but...
My lips (as an African American) are naturally full and I feel dumb, but hitting notes on the staff can be a problem for me, and it mught just be that I am on the staff, but don't realize it. I don't have another mellophone to compare a C or B to, so, there's that, and when I tried getting a trumpet to help me, he/she is too busy trying to see how high he or she can go. Blah. If you could help PM me.
