Maybe it was the idea of a Boss on the next floor getting the blood pumping through his veins, or maybe it was just the competition getting his adrenaline flowing through his body when he thought about going head-to-head with the two most badass fighters that he knew. He couldn't really say what the reason was, but on the 24th Floor Kou had practically wiped out the entire level's worth of demons before Kyou or Kyouko even really managed to get their flow together and contribute to the slaughter. There weren't a lot of tough enemies this time, granted, but the lull before the Boss always seemed to be a thing for them. Didn't give anybody an excuse to slack off, did it? But Kou was really pumping now, his bat caving carnivorous craniums left and right with a crackling crash and bang! Once the level was clear, there was no debate over who had killed the most devils on this one. His sister and brother would just have to try and get their act together for the big battle to come on the next floor, or they were going to be eating his dust for the rest of the day!

Leaning against the wall next to the door to the stairs leading to the 25th Floor, the halfway point of the Tower as far as he knew, Kou tapped his heel with a renewed confidence and waited for his siblings to finish cleaning their gear, resting up a little bit, and getting ready for the big fight to come.

"Hey Kyou, you remember the story Aunt Nia told us back in the B.F. about how when Uncle Nito was younger, some guy in a game store told him that if he liked cats, he should check out this game called...what was it?...Neko...Nekopata? Nekopara? Something like that?" he smirked at the memory, obviously trying to contain his laughter at the pleasant thoughts, "He thought it was some instructional game about raising cats. And Aunt Nia told us how she walked in on him half-traumatized with a controller in his hand at an inn one night, asking 'Why?! Why would you do that with a catgirl? WHY?!' ...Ah man, those were good times...you think he was older or younger than he is in this time during that memory?"

He had a feeling about the 25th Floor.

It was true that when they had set out today he'd joked about a potential boss on the 25th Floor since it was the halfway point in the Tower, but now that they were standing in front of the door to the 25th Level at last, his instincts were telling him that something particularly strong was indeed waiting for them at the top of those stairs. And he wasn't even the one in the group who was supposed to have the sharp animal instincts to know when danger was laying in wait for them. If the Lion could feel he, then he knew that the Tiger could feel it even sharper. His hair would be standing on end if he were an actual feline right now, but instead, he simply felt the chill of intimidation slide down his spine like the world warning him against doing something stupid. Which, naturally, meant that the three of them together were definitely about to do something stupid. No chance that they would turn back, and as long as they stuck together, there was nothing that they needed to be afraid of, was there? Fighting smart, fighting together, but most of all, fighting like a Nekata...that was their way. And that was what had kept them alive all this time.

"You guys feel that too, right?" he couldn't help asking, his lip almost trembling in unbidden excitement at the fight to come, knowing that they were going to be going all-out, do-or-die in there, was enough to have him practically champing at the bit to get a piece of it. Finally, after floors of wastes of life and useless, half-wit devils they were going to get something worth their time. Normally, the feeling of something ill waiting for them might have worried him...but together with both of his siblings, fighting as one...all he could feel was confidence. And it made him ten times stronger than he would ever have been alone.

He hadn't been wrong. Stepping into the 25th Level of the Tower there was indeed a powerful demon waiting on them, the Watchdog Orthrus, and it had come at them almost as soon as they came through the door...not heeding any warnings...with a level of ferocity that had put them on the defensive right from the outset. Scattering to force it to try and divide attention, Kou took the massive canine devil head on, blocking its attempt to clamp its jaws around his neck by jamming his bat between its jaws and then clamping his own hands on either level of its jaws to pry it open slowly...taking his bat back when it overpowered him temporarily and leaping to a distance, skidding close to the wall...only to dodge to the side just in time to avoid its charge and let it smash straight through the wall into an adjoining office and skid into the desk, sending papers and desk contents flying all over the area. It was one Hell of a devil, he had to admit...overpowering him after all of his training head-on wasn't something he could sneeze at. But all he was doing right now was stalling for time, and not seeing that was going to be the Orthrus's downfall, he was certain. Whatever was in the upper levels of the Tower, the stronger foes, the more higher-ranked bosses...it was trying hard to keep them from it.

But that just made him want it more.

"After I kill you, when you turn into your little demon fairy dust or whatever it is...?" he began as he recovered and faced down the devil, his smack talk keeping it focused on him as Kyouko and Kyou got into position for a strike to take it down...and when he smirked, he could practically feel it snarl and knew he'd done his job just right, "Tell your master on the way out that this is our Tower."

That was a pretty good one-liner, but he had to admit that it raised an interesting question that he had not yet had the time to really contemplate. Whenever they defeated a devil, it returned to magatsuhi and that essence dissipated into the sky, usually floating upward before it became invisible again. Did that mean that it was ascending into the air? Into the sky? Into the heavens, even? Did demons that got killed go to heaven, and if so, why? Did they do something especially virtuous as devils, or was it just that being a devil was their punishment and their death as a devil was the cleansing that would allow their souls to go back into the reincarnation cycle as pure souls again? Was that how it worked, then? Or was it just reducing the being to its essence and dissipating into the wind, only to settle upon the Earth again later to fuel it as a sort of lifestream, or even...was it possible that it was eventually drawn back down into Hell where it should have been in the first place, regaining a corporeal Hellish form there, making the cycle practically endless and everything they were doing only a stop-gap measure to some divine method or the war's end, something they weren't aware of?

...These were the questions that kept you up at night. They made him think. But as he thought, he couldn't avoid the truth that he was about to become food for this Orthrus if his siblings didn't land their attacks already and take it down.

...Or was he?

"Oh, I've been waiting for this one," he smirked, suddenly raising his phone in front of him and calling out, "Mithra! Tear him apart!"

YES! Damn it, YES! A LION Demon, finally, emerged from his phone and tore STRAIGHT into Orthrus's stupid freaking face until it was CLEAR FREAKING OFF!

Lions, man. Hell yeah. 25th Floor to Kou Nekata, ladies and gentlemen. That made it 3-to-2-to-1 after 5 Floors today...since one of those floors was a tie, the math does add up for you nerds questioning it just now. Deal with it.

The 26th Floor was next after the 25th, but Kou was still riding quite high as he ascended the stairs from the last one, his newest demonic ally suiting his style just so damn well that he couldn't help but feel as though the rest of the Tower was going to be a bit of a cakewalk by comparison. This...was a notion that was quickly dispelled when he avoided an attack by a mass of Forneus, the first boss they had faced now in a horde form, by substituting himself with the mannikin decoy that Futomimi had suggested that he use in the case of an emergency today. Hadn't expected to burn that token so soon, but you did what you had to do in order to survive. Looked like this was a sign from whatever was looming, waiting for them at the top of this Tower, that whatever they had overcome so far...the real fight began now. Every level from here on was going to be a fight that tested both their power and their ability to think in the middle of battle. Mithra's physical skills were a good match for the Forneus, but there were a couple of magicians in the back spamming Tetrakarn which made Kou need to alter his attack strategy on the fly.

"Tch...new plan, Thor!" he called out the muscular Norse God, and almost on instinct, the demons half-knelt before the Thunder Reign of the Thunder God crashed down upon their heads and fried them where they stood, reducing them to little more than squealing heaps of ash and bone, "...That was weird. But I guess we'll have to be more careful from here on. ...Kyou, Kyouko, 27th Floor ahead...keep an eye out when I open the door. They might start laying ambushes for us, too...best not to be too reckless."

His words might have proven prophetic, for when the door to the 27th Floor opened there appeared to be little in the way of demons filling it out. What had been there was a terrifying ice witch sitting at the center of the room crying, wearing what looked to have once been a wedding dress, but while the woman herself was an obvious ambush of a devil waiting for them to get too close to attack, what they hadn't exactly expected but probably should have seen coming was the rush of devils that had been lingering in the offices on either side of the 'woman', the chaotic battle that ensued as the three of them were surrounded on all sides by their demonic enemies. It had been a whirlwind thereafter of ice from the witch, whip-cracks from Kyouko, slashing daggers from his younger brother, heavy blows from his bat and kicks from his feet to keep foes at distance, and of course, blood...thick rivers of crimson blood stained the floor beneath their feet, their weapons, their clothes, their enemies, and the concentration of it made everything slippery from weapons and enemies to the floor beneath their feet so thick that it was hard to stand!

It was a desperate, bloody battle, and it had been over in a matter of minutes...the demons unable to break the perfect formation of the Nekata Trio and their unified flurry of attacks. Demons, even when attacking as a pack, were still not truly organized...not these ones, at any rate, and their haphazard attacks had not been able to overcome three fighting in harmony. And soon, it was only the trio remaining...and the ice witch lingering near the back of the room, backing away slowly.

"You tried to trap us here. Bad girl," Kou loomed in front of her, tapping his bat ominously against his palm, "...But not bad enough, it seems. Kyouko...why don't you show her just how bad you can be?"

There were just some unwritten rules that you didn't cross in your lifetime if you wanted to survive. You didn't tug on Superman's cape, obviously (whatever that meant). You didn't put Baby in a corner (whatever that meant). You didn't make White Goodman bleed his own blood (whatever that meant). ...Man, he really needed to find some references that he actually understood. His Uncle Nito would have known what all of these old movie references meant...in fact, he was the one that he had heard them from back in the Bad Future...but he hadn't really gotten the chance to ask him what any of them meant. Though he could guess what the Superman one meant, of course...you didn't poke a bear with a stick unless you wanted to get mauled, was a similar thought process, after all...but who in the heck was Baby and why wouldn't you put her in a corner? Didn't kids who were naughty get put into timeout all the time? That was a thing, right? Even if his family didn't do stuff like that, he knew that it was at least a thing. But why wouldn't you make someone bleed his own blood?! I mean, I get the thinking behind not making somebody bleed...might hurt, wasn't a nice thing to do, all of that...but what was even the purpose of the 'my own blood' part of that? Was he going to bleed someone else's blood? Was such a thing even possible? And if so, he wondered what kind of curse one had to cast to make it so...?

...All the while as he thought of that, one other truth of the world was being firmly implanted into the memory of that poor ice witch as Kyouko claimed the 27th Floor for herself rather...messily.

You do not f*** with the Nekata siblings, especially when the three of them were together. Especially if you were trying to trick them.

And as the blood splattered against the window as his sister finished off her prey, Kou had to think that even if that devil died and was reincarnated in another life, once more...it would NEVER forget that lesson after what his sister was doing to her.

The 28th Floor loomed ahead of them, but after the break that they team had taken on the 27th, catching their breath, wiping themselves down of the blood and sweat that the gruesome, inch-by-inch battle with the devils had left them almost completely soaked with, there was a confidence that filled the 'older' brother as they stepped up to it, their jackets and dress still stained mostly red despite their best efforts to dry them out. It was a shame that they hadn't found a laundry room in the Tower, but such a thing would most likely be in the basement of the Tower if there was one to begin with. And they were heading to the top for now, not the bottom. Later, maybe, they could see about getting clean...after hours, once they were done climbing for the night, certainly. But for now, they had to fight on while the daylight wasn't failing them. Being in a Tower with a countless horde of devils that could come down and attack them at any given time was probably not the most opportune situation they could have been in, after all. And the swifter they cut through them to the top, the sooner they could all sleep soundly at night...and get their bearings with a view from the top of this skyscraping monolith. One floor at a time, though. And they were over halfway there now.

28th Floor was next to go.

"Ambush on 27...should I push it and try my luck at prognosticating what we'll find on the 28th?" he teased his siblings, even using the word 'prognosticating' to sound unduly creepy and ephemeral as he did, "I foresee on the next level a turncoat demon that actually wants to join up with us. ...And bout two dozen heavy-hitters that would rather see us as pulp than friend."

He pressed the door open to see what their fate would be...

Yeah, so...he hadn't exactly been right, but he hadn't been entirely wrong, either.

There hadn't been a smaller demon that wanted to go turncoat and ally with their team, but there had been easily two-dozen high-level oni, Sui-Ki and Kin-Ki if he wasn't mistaken, who had damn near made a mess of him when the trio had gotten into a scrap with the large group of fighting-type devils on the 28th Floor. They were the strongest trio, of that he had no doubt, but the numbers game was also a very real thing when you killed two devils and finally pushed back the enemy from your younger brother only to find yourself beset by an even sturdier demon. If not for his brother's perfectly-timed interruption stab, he might have taken a hit he wouldn't have been able to get up from at one point during the fight, but it was that synergy that made their trio nigh-unstoppable. In the end, it had been almost impossible to keep count of how many they had killed, but Kou was fairly sure his brother had edged him out again, with Kyouko's support role in this particular scrap leaving her trailing close behind the two of them. But what had mattered most was that they survived. That they endured the increasingly-deadly levels up until now, and they were getting stronger, more prepared to face whatever traps and threats were waiting for them for 22 more Levels before the top.

And to that end, Kou continued to use the Draw and Fusion options on his Cathedral of Shadows App to raise his level to match the challenges that lay ahead. This time, he took inspiration from the devils that he had just fought and called upon the strongest of their race, the venerable and strong Ongyo-Ki, an Oni without equal. Kou smirked and let out a breath as he thought about the boost this would give him on the 29th Floor. And the 30th beyond, but that would come after. One floor at a time, he reminded himself. Any more than that, and they might catch themselves looking ahead and get blindsided.

And he wouldn't lose focus again.

29th Floor coming up. Kou stood by the door to the stairs leading up to it and cleaned his weapon thoughtfully, knowing that if the last level had been that hard the next one was only going to be even tougher moving forward. It was starting to get to the point where simply walking into a room with the three of them might not be enough to survive whatever was to come. They might need a plan to fight, a strategy...they weren't exactly the most strategic of trios, but they could put together a battle plan when they needed to. Usually it was Kou who took the lead in that, deciding whether or not the room might need to utilize Kyou's instincts or his analysis more than the other. It was better if he could scope it out from a distance beforehand, but they didn't have that luxury this time, each floor basically being a brand new Cracker Jack box with no idea what the prize waiting inside was going to be...only that each one would be more deadly than the last. He tapped his bat against his shoulder as he pushed up from the wall and turned the corner, opening the door and starting up the steps with his family right behind him.

"Kyou, you head in first and scope it out this time. If your instincts tell you it's a trap, get to safety and we'll fight with the wall at our backs," he told him as they moved, not coming up with anything especially solid but something that would hopefully get them through the 29th Floor, "Kyouko, your range will cover him in case something jumps out at him. I'll be there to support you any which way I can. ...Ready?"

How many floors were in this thing again? While it was true that fighting demons get her blood pumping, being woken up before she had her fill of sleep was enough to put her on a sour mood that could last for hours. She had been grumbling ever since, and the poor, unfortunate demons that dared cross her found out why this was such a bad idea. She followed behind her brothers, and she couldn't help noticing the enthusiasm and chatty disposition of Kou...any other time she would have followed along. Right now...

She just grunted in answer, or snorted air out of her nose when something was particularly funny. Still, her whip was deadly as ever, and she wouldn't fall behind in that little contest of theirs. Oh, no... she was just starting.

His sister might not have been fully awake yet, but her whip could still cut a throng through the devils that were in their path. The 29th Floor had been something of a rest floor, he had to admit, where the devils weren't quite as powerful as the levels they had passed through to reach this point. Nonetheless, Kyouko in her sleep-haze had still ripped through far more of them than both of her brothers combined on this floor, perhaps her grumpy demeanor starting to leak into her fighting style a little more as she slowly woke up to face the day. Again he was reminded, as though he ever needed to be, of just how formidable their sister truly was...perhaps even more terrifying than the twins themselves...and that was saying something when you looked at the bloody path that the two had left behind them on their way up this Tower, alone. Still, not having to worry as much about strategy on this one as he had thought he might need to was a relief. Taking the time to clean himself up a bit, he found a scrap of an old white button-up shirt in an office and tossed it to his sister so that she could do the same. Just because they were leaving a trail of blood behind them didn't mean they had to be completely bloody, too. Right?

"Damn, Bed Bug," he teased his sister with his usual stoic smirk, crossing his arms and leaning against the wall next to the stairs to the next level, "Wake up on the wrong side of the bed? At this rate, the Boss on the next floor won't have time to blink before you're mopping the floor with him." Honestly, he hoped that was exactly the case. A pissed off Kyouko would take them to the Top Floor in the blink of an eye. Better than the few days it'd take at this rate.

It needed to be said that one of the reasons Kou was getting a bit more talkative was that the day was starting to wear on, and while he tended to be a bit sluggish in the mornings, when the day stretched out and he had more time to get invested in it...the more he enjoyed himself and really stared to throw himself into the battles to come. They had faced quite a variety of challenges on the 21st-29th Floors, and now they stood before the door of the 30th Floor with a Boss of unknown strength waiting for them on the other side. He could feel his adrenaline pumping, his blood flowing freely, his senses heightening to levels that they could never hope to reach outside of a battle situation like this one. His bat felt light in his grip, his lips curled into a confident smirk as they came closer to the door and the top of the stairs, and somehow...it almost felt as though they were still on Level 1, free of the grind thus far, free of the grime that had gathered upon them, free of the exhaustion and the pains and everything else that had come with two and a half days now of non-stop fighting and struggling for their lives.

In a weird way, maybe they were right at home in a world where life-or-death was more than just a saying...but a way of life? They were used to the constant fighting, the fretting, the motion to avoid the Corruption chasing them. Were they better suited for a world like this one? A world like their own? It was a little bit of a morbid thought, but...if they found a peaceful world, would they even know what to do in it? Kou wasn't fretting over the matter, but it was a thought that flashed across his mind once or twice as he prepared for the next battle to come. This...was familiar. And together with his two siblings, he was comfortable getting ready for a fight to the finish with an enemy probably stronger than any of them...and somehow, he had no fear that any of them were going to die.

"The Boss is double points this time," he challenged his siblings, resting his bat on his shoulder, "Got to give you guys a chance to catch up, after all."

You are either terrifyingly strong, or foolish beyond compare!" the Boss that they saw as they pushed open the door and entered the level chided them, brandishing blades and glaring them down sharply, "If you wish to proceed and prove yourself worthy of our Lord's will, you must first show that you are strong enough to live in a world such as the one he imagines! Therefore, I shall test you here...and if you are found wanting...I shall kill you here, and now!"

Greeting the trio as they reached the 30th Floor of the Mist Wall was a devil in the shape of a female swordswoman, Yaksini. And no sooner has she spoken than the sea-green haired older brother of the trio raised an eyebrow, surprised that one of the Bosses in this Tower was actually taking the time to talk with them now, to address them...and the words that she spoke made him raise an eyebrow sharply. These were some new wrinkles to what was going on in this tower, weren't they? Tower of the Mantra? Test their strength in combat here and now? The way that she spoke made him wonder if entering this Tower and starting their ascent the way that they had thus far was entering them into some kind of contest...or a challenge? Was there really some organization of Devils filling the floors of the Mist Wall Tower in the name of some ideal? And by climbing and fighting, were they in some way accidentally playing along with their reason for being here? Yaksini mentioned something about a Lord, Kou noticed, and that was really interesting, indeed. It made him smirk a little more and ready his nail bat all the faster.

"Mantra, Test, Lord...can't say any of that means much to me," he spoke first, smirking as he readied himself for the fight, "But if you're saying there's some big wig at the top of this Tower waiting to see if we're strong enough to reach him, then he can count on seeing us real soon. Because the Nekata Siblings, fighting together...can't lose!"

Kyouko Nekata, The Seafoam Guardian of the North

She hadn't expected a demon to address them like that. Or talk to them, really. So, when the female demon started talking, Kyouko narrowed her eyes and tilted her head from behind Kyou, rubbing her eye. Something about a lord, and power and a challenge. To think they had been here only to get to the top and have a better view of what was going on. "What did the old hag say? 'Please beat the crap out of me?' Yeah...sounds about right. Your wish is my command." the girl hissed, unrolling her whip, letting it fall to the floor, like a snake ready to attack. Kyouko couldn't care less about the motivations of the demon...if she wanted to test them...then she'd get a surprise when they completely wreck her. No one messed with the Nekata siblings.

"Hey, wouldn't it be fun if Nico, Nel, Neji and Nori were here? Heh...they were hilarious."
