Manju: -Trots out with her bunny tail raised high, eyes bright as she looks around the room to see what new things might be around.-

Quasar: *sitting at a table and flipping through books and his notes*

Manju: -She spied someone sitting off to the side, reading something. It piqued her interest; she knew about books, but there weren't a whole lot of those back home. Most stories or instructions were purely oral. A light chill trailed her as she curiously approached.- Hey there. That's a whole lot of paper! What's it all about?

Quasar: *eyes don't even flick up from the pages* Stars. Studying, analyzing, comparing ancient charts. *writes something down*

Manju: Oooh, stars are nice! We've got lots of pretty ones back home. Sometimes it's dark for a long time so the stars are always out, as long as the clouds aren't in the way. -She peered over the male's shoulder at the bits of paper covering the wooden surface.- We don't have any of this stuff though.

Quasar: *pauses* Unless you come from southern hemisphere, one's here are the same as everywhere else. *taps pencil against table* Clouds terrible obstacle for research, why inside tonight...would rather not be. *glances at her* Every culture tracks star movement. Some more precisely than others.

Manju: -She grinned widely- Yup, I came from the south! It's mostly snow and ice down there. We use the stars for finding our way, cause sometimes the land looks a lot alike. We don't write it down though, the older people just show the younger ones what they know, and knowledge and stories get passed down that way. -She gave the papers another curious look.- We don't write much down, back home.

Quasar: Not a very good method of record keeping. Knowledge is lost that way when someone can't pass it on in event of untimely death. Glad most cultures have decide that some sort of writing Much better idea. *pause* Would like to see southern stars some time...would be interesting to track them.

Manju: I bet it's written down somewhere. Seems like almost everything got written down at some point, with all the books you have up here! -She gave her head a curious little tilt, breath forming a faint cloud when she exhaled.- Track stars? Like follow them?

Quasar: If from a remote culture...unlikely, unless someone has come to do so, but since you don't seem to be aware of any anthropologists in your midst chances of that become very slim. *nods* Of course. Interesting study. Like the fact that the star that is used today as the North Pole Star was not used several thousand years ago and will not be the Northern pole star in about 1000 years due to the way the planet and galaxy move through space?

Manju: -She blinked to expression mild confusion.- North Pole Star? I've never heard of that one. -She glanced up at the ceiling, in her mind seeing past it to the sky she had grown up with.- I see some of the stars from home, but lots that I don't recognize as well.

Quasar: You may know it better as Polaris, the star at the end of the handle of Ursa Major...or The Big Dipper. *thinks* I would give you the Southern equivalent but there is not a true Southern Pole Star... Sigma Octantis is the closest thing...And then there is the constellation the Southern Cross.

Manju: -She shook her head, a couple small flakes of snow falling to her feet and exhaling another breath that misted faintly.- I've never heard of Polaris. I don't really know about Ursa Major either, but sometimes The Big Dipper is in the sky if it's the right time and season. Though it's upside down here, so it took me a while to find it! -Her ears and tail drooped a tad.- I haven't seen Crux for a while either. I never thought you could leave stars behind.

Quasar: *looks down at the floor and notices the flakes as they melt* ...*doesn't know a tactful way to ask her about dandruff so just goes with blunt* Perhaps a new shampoo would help? *shrugs* Move up enough in latitude and longitude and everything changes. For note, Ursa Major Is the Big Dipper. Ursa Major is it's real name.

Manju: -She didn't notice the male looking at the bits of snow, so his comment didn't really register to her except to make her a bit confused again.- Shampoo? Can shampoo help you learn the stars? Also, that's pretty awesome! I might've heard both those names before, but that constellation is so low to the ground that I don't think I've ever seen it but maybe once or twice, if I've ever seen it at all. The elders said if you go further north it rises higher in the sky, so it was good for us to at least know about it just in case.

Quasar: *blinks* ...No...for dandruff that fell from head...help ease scalp irritation. *nods* Would be true for southern hemisphere. Different access to night sky due to curve of the Earth. Should learn to navigate by that star now, instead of old marks in the sky, most won't be visible or in wrong place.

Manju: -She gave a nod and glanced back at the ceiling again.- Oh yes, it's like all the ones I'm used to just wiggled around. I can see Orion's Belt, but it's also flipped the wrong way. -She looked back down at the male and giggled.- And it's not dandruff, it's snow! See? -She blew a puff of air, directing it higher up. This time her breath condensed into a very visible mist. The air around her got drier, and suddenly a handful of small flakes appeared to drift to the ground. She looked back down and grinned at the male.- I can control cold and make it snow sometimes. Lots of people back home can, so it's not that special. Oh, I'm Manju Meriwether! It's nice to meet ya!

Avalon was taking his afternoon walk and stopped at a nearby river to take a drink. It had not been very long since he and his previous mate had separated. They had drifted apart and it was decided that they should go their separate ways. So once again he was on his own, no noodles usually came to that area so he had a lot of time to himself now.

Manju paced along, enjoying the fine day. She was just a tad bit lost, but since she hadn't a particular desination in mind anyway it was of no major consequence. The grass beneath her paws made the faintest of crunching sounds. Reined in, her power didn't spread, but it was still enough that her touch put the lightest of frosts over the surface of the grass blades. The kiss of the sun was all it took to melt it, as though it had never been in the first place.

The babbling sound of water caught her attention. It had been some time since she'd last had a drink. She altered her course and headed towards the sound, humming softly under her breath an old song from her home village.

Avalon's ear twitched as he heared the sound of someone else approaching. It was a strange thing for this area. His curiousity got the best of him and he began to look around to see if he could catch a glimpse of that person.

Manju wasn't really paying attention to her surroundings. She hadn't met anyone out here so far, and if fact the last couple days the place seemed to be fairly devoid of settlements. Maybe she was just missing them and they were spread far apart, but since she'd been enjoying seeing green, /growing/ things in abundance it hadn't bothered her too much. She'd run into a populated area eventually, and it wasn't like she didn't know how to look after herself. Foraging had been tricky at first when she had to figure out what was safe to eat and what wasn't, but she had a good idea of it now.

The sun glinted down on something in the distance and Manju sped up. She pushed her way past some undergrowth, and there was the river she had heard. She trotted over and lowered her head to drink, the currant snatching the water away before any of it had a chance to chill for too long.

Avalon paused as he saw a female noodle come through the brush and to the river to drink. She was a pretty little thing with her pale blue fur and lavender hair. He calmly walked just a bit closer to the vixen before speaking, "Excuse me, Miss? Are you lost?"

Manju squeaked, and with her surge of startlement came a surge of power. The water crackled as the area where she'd been drinking froze, though the thin layer of ice was whipped away by the current so quickly it might well have never existed. Frost dusted the ground around her feet, and she raised purple eyes up to look for the one who had addressed her.

She didn't have to look far; the male's white coat made him stand out among all the green and brown even more than her own colors did. A wave of nostalgia washed over her, pushing away most of the alarm. The pale white and dark blues would have been common colors back home. She cleared her throat nervously, aware that she had probably just made a fool of herself. "Ah, sorry about that. No, no I'm not lost. Just wandering a bit, this is where I happened to end up. That sort of thing." She felt her cheeks warm with embarrassment, and looked off to the side, sure the male was going to either laugh or think her annoying.

Avalon jumped back slightly not expecting the frost. He calmed himself and smiled softly. "It's quite all right. I'm sorry I startled you. It's just that it is rare to have visitors in this area." He sat down his tail curling around his feet comfortably. "My name is Avalon, may I know your name?"

Manju peeked up. The male didn't /sound/ irritated. She flashed him a quick smile. "My name is Manju. I'm from the far south. I wanted to travel, see the world a bit. I've been wandering without any real goals in mind. That's probably how I ended up here. We don't have many plants, so when I see interesting things I just follow them without a care for whether or not it takes me from the road." Her smile held a touch of ruefulness. On her own it didn't seem so bad, admitting it aloud made her seem careless.

"It is nice to meet you Manju. Have you seen many interesting places in your travels?" The vixen had seemed skittish before so he hoped that this conversation might calm her a bit.

Manju gave another slight small and a soft chuckle. "Depends on what you find interesting. If you came from a place anything like where I cam from, then almost everything I've seen would count. If you're used to areas like these, or those huge villages people call towns that have at least hundreds of folks living there, then what I've seen probably wouldn't be so much interesting to you."

Avalon smiled and nodded, "I suppose you are right about that. I was born in a town, but to honest I didn't like it much. You were born in a small village then?"

"Pretty small, compared to most of the places I've seen, but not the smallest. We lived kind of in the middle of nowhere with a pretty harsh environment. Course I grew up there so it didn't seem that bad at the time, but now that I've seen what places like these are like we must really seem to struggle by comparison," Manju said, recalling the frozen tundra of her homeland and the saga of a journey it took to get to a different body of land.

"Not necessarily, Manju. Cultures just differ, it's the way of life. What's important is that we try to understand others instead of making assumptions."

She laughed. "I don't know, would you consider living in a frozen iceland where nothing really grows without help a struggle compared to this forest where things just grow on their own?"

Avalon laughed, "Well I can certainly hide better in a frozen iceland than here."

Manju had to laugh at that. Her exhaled breath showed as a visible cloud of mist, even though the day was too warm for something like that. "I can agree with that! Whites and blues and grays blend very well with the landscape. Even my hair sometimes blends in, though not too often." She chuckled and tossed her purple locks. "Well hiding is certainly useful when we hunt for meat, but there's a lot more to thriving in such a landscape than blending in." She tilted her head curiously. "What was it like where you came from?"

"I've no doubt about that." He paused as she asked him about where he came from and sighed. "Things were rough, I'll admit. There were many noodles with intricate designs, so as a child... let's just say I didn't like it much."

"Why," Manju asked, with honest curiousity reflected in her amethyst eyes. Did Avalon not like intricately patterned people?

Avalon sighed, "Getting called boring and plain enough times spawned some animosity when I was young though I have gotten over it now that I am an adult, thankfully.."

Manju looked surprised. "Boring? Well not all people like the same things. Old people like stuff that involves not much moving, for example. It's not boring, just different." She wasn't deliberately misunderstanding, she just honestly could not comprehend being discriminated against because of looks since she'd never come across such behavior yet. She also found Avalon quite striking, such lovely, soft-looking fur, like freshly fallen snow, with that dark blue standing out starkly.

Avalon smiled. She really was just as cute as she looked, a bit naive, but it was nice and refreshing. "I'm glad you think so. Sometimes simplicity is good."

"/I/ think so," Manju said. "Some of the best things are simple. Not that complicated is /bad/, but you don't want to do that all the time when you really don't even have to." She was curious now. "Why did they think you were boring, anyway? If it's not too personal to ask."

"True..." He shrugged, "They told me it was because my fur was plain. If there was an ulterior motive I don't care what it was. Those words were particularly hurtful especially when they purposly threw me into the mud 'To give me some color'."

Manju looked mildly horrified at Avalon's words. "Throw you in the mud?! That's awful! It's not like people can /choose/ the colors they're born with! And white is a perfectly good color. You look exactly like new snow, and people around here seem to like that. Plush the blue reminds me of some of the color of ice that floats in the ocean."

Avalon's smile grew at the girls words. "I've never heard my colors described that way. You are an interesting vixen."

Manju cocked her head to the side and smiled. "You think? Where I come from I'm pretty average. A little too energetic, depending on who you ask, but nothing out of the ordinary." Her grin suddenly widened a little, then her brow furrowed in concentration. For a moment she stood like that with no clue as to why. Then suddenly the wind that blew past took on a distinct chill. Though there were few clouds in the sky, small flakes of snow began drifting around her and Avalon. Her face relaxed into a smiel again. "See! You look so dashing and regal with snow falling around you!"

"There is nothing wrong with having extra energy. It just means you are able to do more." He paused at her confused look and stared in amazement at the flakes of snow. He felt his cheeks heat at her next words but still smiled, "Thank you, Manju." He stepped forward to get a better look at her. His icy blue orbs trained on her coat. Snowflakes. He smiled it was rather fitting. He saw her tail and paused, "Has your tail always been this long?" He was curious now never having met anyone without a long tail.

Manju flicked her small, deer-like tail. "Yup! It's not common in my village, but there are several folks who have them. There's some legends that we used to look or be a lot more like deer than foxes, but through the years less of those were born until they were all but gone. The tail is pretty much the only thing left." She pondered her words. "Frankly I think hooves would be a lot harder to travel over ice with, and horns aren't really necessary when you have teeth and claws. But still, it's a nice story."

Avalon chuckled again and stepped back a bit to be polite. "It certainly is an interesting tale."

Manju grinned impishly and wiggled her tail. "Yes, it most certainly is!"

"I do think so and you are definately not inpudent."
