Alex didn't even bother sitting with his team anymore. They were all getting a little grumpy and starting to argue about things so Alex sat with the opposing team and hoped that nobody noticed.

"Hey." He said as he flopped down next to Yin. "You enjoying the game so far?"

Small talk, basically, since Yin's team made short work of Alex's this round and they barely made it any further up the field, still much too far away to even attempt a field goal or a touch down.

"Well, it was nice chatting! Time to lose some more!" He laughed as he pushed himself to his feet and rejoined his team.

He was slightly surprised to see Alexander come and sit next to him, but was not displeased. "It is different," he said after a moment, "but it is fun. I am enjoying it."

He stood, frowning slightly as Alexander left. He may have been joking but it was not terribly funny, he should have more faith in his team, or they would never get anywhere at this rate.

Ok, Alex played a little better this time. But his team? It was like they were just giving up! They were being completely over run. If Alex had even an ounce of speed in him, he might have gone after the other teams players after knocking his cousin to the ground. But as it was, other then doing a lot of shoving and grappling, Alex's position on the team was absolutely useless.

"Why is nobody covering the fastest person on their team?" Alex asked his dad as they passed each other and he went and took a seat once more. It was an innocent question, but a valid one.

They were slowly gaining down the field. Really slowly. Too slowly. And then the ball snapped and he reached up and caught it. And ran. After ten meters he really had enough distance to jog to the goal, but he kept up a good pace, not going full out but fast enough. He could hear whoops and cheers even as he cleared the goal at the end.

So uh...what happened now? He had no idea.

Apparently a lot of back-slapping and hair tousling, which was not exactly pleasant when one had antenna. Still, it was hard to keep a grin off his face as he slowly made his way back to the seating area and took his spot next to Alexander.

Alex smiled happily as Yin sat next to him. "Congratulations on being the best player on your team...wait wait, no, not your team, in the whole game right now!" Alex would have reached out and patted him on the back but...he wasn't sure Yin really wanted him touching him at this point. Though the game seemed to be making things more pleasant between the two of them for now.

Alex watched as his team huddled up. His dad had stepped back with that frown on his face that said he was thinking about something much to hard and it was starting to upset him a little bit. He walked over and talked to Uncle Jeremy, and his uncle was nodding as though in agreement with something. Suddenly he turned and looked at Alex, and said "Alex, here, we're switching you to offense."

What?

Alex just...gave his dad an incredulous look, then slowly pushed himself to his feet and shuffled over towards him. "What do you mean you're switching me?"

"You wanted to play QB, you got it. Jeremy say's it's ok. Now get over there and tell us what to do."

Alex was almost shocked into silence. He had always argued with his dad that they should let him play this position, but he never really expected...

And now he was nervous as all hell that he would screw it up. This was his chance to prove he could actually be useful for once.

He didn't disappoint. He told everyone what to do, and since he'd had an outsiders perspective of his teams offense all game he knew what needed to be done. They made short work of the other team, and Alex threw in a perfect pass for a touchdown, and then insisted on going for a two point conversion.

Which he also nailed.

Today was really turning into a good day again~

Yin ducked his head at the compliment but could not help but grin. This...this was what friendship was supposed to be like. Out playing games together and if not on the same team enjoying a nice, healthy rivalry. This was like taking some of his fondest memories from the Clan and then adding in an actual friend and taking out some of the stress. And he liked it. A lot. Maybe they could find a way to play bruteball when they went back to Amityville.

Alexander was suddenly being called away. He watched in interest as it appeared that Alexander was going to be going on the offense, curious as to what the boil would do, and that he would actually get to see him play.

The next thing he knew the opposing team was working its way up the field and scoring. Alexander was...actually really good at throwing the ball. He wondered why the zomboil had not been playing that position from the beginning as he retook the field.

Alex had retaken his seat with his own team this time. Mostly because they were still busy congratulating him on a job well done and giving him slaps on the back. The other reason is that the person he was sitting with now played opposite shifts to Alex so he didn't feel as strong of a need to fraternize with the enemy anymore.

Now that he could actually sit down and watch the defense at work, however, he could see exactly where they kept screwing up. Why were they doing such a shotty job of covering the receivers? They really needed a few quicker players on the defensive side instead of sticking them all on the offense and never using them.

Another field goal for the other team. Ah well, back to work for Alex.

Yin managed to catch a few more passes but there was someone there now that was determined not to let him start running. But the passes thrown at him he caught, and he did not drop the ball once he had it, his large hands actually useful for something. They were forced to kick when they could not get the ball quite far enough, but they had more points now, and excited murmurs were beginning to go around that they could win this. Probably.

Back to doing what Alex did best, and that was kicking a**.

Oh wait, Alex was never good at that....

That's probably why on the very first play, he got blitzed, and ended up getting knocked to the ground with a clothes line to the chest at the same time somebody took him out at the legs.

Literally. They took his ******** leg off. It was lying on the ground next to him when he used his arms to push himself up off the ground to a sitting position.

"Really nice guys, thanks!" he said, more then a little sarcastically. "Any of you jerks gonna help me off the field now?"

It was still just a game, so he smiled as he said it, but inside, he died a little at how his small victory on the field had been so short lived. Somebody down in hell hated him.

As he grabbed for his leg as he was helped up off of the ground, hands on the shoulders of the two cousins on either side of him as he was forced to hop off of the field on one leg. He sat down on the ground hard and started the work of reattaching The leg bones to his knee, and letting FEAR start to meld things back into place.

He was out for the rest of the game.

Oh, and they didn't get any points this round. How shocking.

It was like he was watching the game being played in slow motion. He could see what could have been done to negate part of the damage, though it was a fairly impossible predicament. And at Alexander's speed? The zomboil was on the ground...and was that...was that his leg next to him? The mantodae was on his feet without even really realizing it, but he felt fairly useless as he watched two of the other zomboil's help him off the field.

Yin knew that zombies were different. The zomboil seemed to be okay. His teammates that were not playing were effectively blocking Yin from getting over to him, but he kept him in sight until someone was pulling at him to get back out onto the field.

He was never letting Alexander play bruteball again.

Maybe Alex's team had been a little bit angry at having their QB taken out so efficiently by Yin's team. There was definitely some bitterness in the mutterings of his fellow team mates and in the glares they were shooting over to the other team as well.

Alex was pretty nonplussed, however. This had actually worked out quite well for him. He looked like the teams hero, however broken he now was, and he got to relax for the rest of the game.

Defense worked hard this time around, and were perhaps a little more rough then was needed. But they kept the other team from getting any points, so all in all maybe Alex's injury was inspiring~~

Perhaps the best one at keeping Yin's team from getting any points was Yin. Which was evident when a ball that he could have easily jumped up to catch sailed over his antenna. Right, eyes on the ball.

The next couple of passes went to anyone but him. But then with no other option the last ball snapped in his direction. He caught it, but short of the necessary mark for them to get a first down, and before he could run with it the zombie defending him plowed into him, sending him flying sideways and landing on his shoulder awkwardly.

The zombie helped him to his feet and on his walk back he began rolling his shoulder, testing it. It was going to be sore tomorrow, and there would probably be one earth of a bruise, but nothing was out of place. This game just needed to end already.

Alex must have at least inspired the offense of his own team to try new things.

Oh wait, nope, he hadn't. But his dad got the ball! Alex watched in bemusement as the big lug of a zombie marched across the field, with other zombies throwing them selves at him only to be drug behind. It was useless, they might as well have just let him go unmolested.

Alex found himself watching Yin, who appeared to have maybe hurt his arm or shoulder in some way. He tested his leg to see if it had at least partially knitted, which it had, though it didn't want to function properly quite yet. Since he couldn't walk, he couldn't go over and check on his friend, so he sullenly stayed put.

Some minutes later, as Alex's dad finally crossed into the endzone, they had another 7 points.

19-15 now. It was turning into an interesting game.

At least Yin was able to rest up a bit as he watched Alexander's father in bemused interest. So, Alexander had not been kidding when he said his father would win if he got the ball. It was so very different than his own touchdown had been, but one had to respect the zombie's strength.

He glanced over at Alexander several times, happy to note that his leg was reattached. So apparently nothing too bad as no one was fretting over him. If Alexander had not been so far away Yin would probably be the one fretting over him, but as it was he just rubbed absentmindedly at his shoulder until it was time to retake the field.

One more touchdown would have finished the game for either team at this point, and Alex, of course, was somewhat hoping his team could bounce back from what had started out as a ridiculous amount of terrible playing to win the game.

But alas, it was not to be so. The zomboil was finally able to push himself to his feet as he waited for the game to end. He kept pressure off of his skeletal leg, however, and kept most of his weight on his right side as he watched the final play of the game.

His uncles team had won this time, but Alex found himself more excited for Yin then anybody else. He'd played really well, especially considering it was his first time, and he was fairly proud of him.
