Actually, I don't see it in bad taste myself. I use the same analogy when people commit immoral acts and justify it because "they were just doing their job." Just because you're paid to do something doesn't mean it's by any means morally justifiable, and one ought not escape scrutiny for their actions simply because something is their "job." Just like religion isn't excused from moral scrutiny or anything else.
So basically the soldiers are enforcing incredibly racist laws after living for years alongside the people they're essentially persecuting since "they're just doing their job." Yeah, not impressed.
That's true, FD. I agree with what you said, but I also think that there are some soldiers who may be doing their jobs just to protect someone/something they value, despite how they think if the actions are morally wrong or right.
Take Izzy and Vaida for example. They both see it that it was unfair and unjustice toward the citizens and their guild members/guards, but they're on the corrupted side where Rogvald is at. That's because they have something that they wanted to protect. Izzy is staying to protect the guild so Rogvald wouldn't use the guild for corrupted needs. And Vaida is staying in order to protect Mihira and the guards. Their loyalties are not residing to Rogvald, but they "do their jobs" in order to protect.
In fact, there were some of the soldiers who thought it was wrong whenever they were forced to torment and/or kill the captives (However, that would be a bad example because there are few who would value their life than receiving punishment or death if trying to defy it.

I'm not saying that your idea is wrong, FD. I agree with you that others are doing their job if there's something beneficial in their favor. I'm just like to point out that there are some that think that it is wrong but are forced to do so in order to protect someone or something they value such as families, friends, and their lives. Heck, why not pull the Anne Frank scene on it?
