Mudras and chakras, huh? Generally I associate them more with the esoteric sects and Hinduism than mainstream, but if it's working, no complaints here. Just make sure you have good guidance on it; I've heard some stories of people messing with the chakra thing before and harming themselves because of bad guidance or no guidance. All depends on kundalini unwinding, I suppose. 3nodding
Welcome to the guild, Carolyn!

well, i learned the chakra stuff from a real buddhist monk. my local art museum dod a huge thing on buddhism and bhutan. we were the first people in the world to see some of the art and artifacts that came from the temples in bhutan. it was amazing. and hinduism is actually very closely related to buddhism. Buddha was once Hindu, but after enlightenment, she started Buddhism.

Hm. Do you know which sect of Buddhism this monk was from? That might explain it. 3nodding
As for the rest, yeah - both Buddhism and Hinduism (and Jainism!) come from the same root, that of early Vedic teachings. I think it'd best equate to proto-Hinduism; Vedic Brahmanism was before the current codified Hinduism and would have been what the Buddha learned. He branched off even before enlightenment too - he sought his enlightenment in the teachings being offered by various teachers and wise men in that faith, but didn't get anything from them. It was only when he branched out on his own and really sat for a think that he came up with Buddhism as it stands now. 3nodding
He really broke from tradition in many ways, too - no soul, no gods as the final beings, no creator deity, no need for prayer, women allowed to be monastics and teachers in the faith...he was a real groundbreaker in a lot of ways!

Huh. I may have to look into this!
Thanks! biggrin
Edit: Looked it up - they're predominantly tantric, which means they're some school or another of Vajrayana. 3nodding Explains the mudras and chakras, then. Esoterism runs deep in Vajrayana. Very nifty!

Hi, my name is Kati.
I am 20 years old and I have been Buddhist for about half a year. I wasn't raised with religion in my life, and I did not suffer because of it. My parents raised me with morals, and a healthy respect for life.
I currently attend STFX university in Nova Scotia Canada. I live with my boyfriend Nathan, who was raised Christian, but embraces my Buddhism with love and will even mediate with me.

I go by "Star." I'm 27 (for another month) and have been lightly studying/practicing Buddhism for about four years...mostly just trying to be "mindful" in all facets of life. This past summer I got more serious about Buddhism, though, and I've since taken up meditation. I live with my partner of six years, who fully supports my undertaking of this path.

My name is Maria. I'm 24, and I do not follow any religion at present. I don't believe in any gods, but due to the fear involved with my Christian upbringing, I sometimes have periods of turmoil where I feel that I cannot trust my own beliefs. I'm not looking at a full conversion to Buddhism at this time; however, I am interested in learning more about Buddhist teachings and meditation techniques because I would like to create more tranquillity in myself.

I'm Kelsey. I'm 16-years-old and have lived without organized religion all my life. I'm a high school junior and I've recently taken interest in Buddhism, and on a bigger scale, Paganism. I'm tired of living my life haywire and thought Buddhism fit my personality and ideals snugly. I'm still researching and debating on whether or not I should take up Buddhism as my religion, so I'm really hoping this guild will help.
My wonderful boyfriend, Jordan, who I've been with for almost two years, supports me completely although he and I have been agnostic/atheist our whole lives. He is accepting and open to the ideas of Buddhism and Paganism.
After high school, I plan on attending the Art Institute of Philadelphia for graphic design, where I will continue to work on a portfolio of tattoo designs and hopefully land an apprenticeship at a tattoo studio. In Philadelphia, I also plan to continue my study of both the French and German language, which I hope to be fluent in at sometime in my life.

Hi Maria, Kelsey! Nice to have you both here. And no worries about not being sure on conversion - we're not pushy here, as a rule. Information and help is what we do, no pressure on you. 3nodding Stick around as long as you please, ask all you want. We'll try and help you out. biggrin

Well let's see...
My name is Devon. Username's Manguusu (pronounced as "mongoose"). I'm 18. Have been interested by Buddhism since I first learned it existed, but only about a month or two ago did I seriously start to look into it. Now I follow the Zen path of Buddhism, as it fits my pre-existing beliefs quite nicely. (More on that in the "What discipline do you follow?" Sticky)
Anyway, I like videogames, politics, freedom, history, friends, family, talking, and meditation.
