"Somewhat," Shanya said, looking back at the house. "I'm just worried, that's all. This is probably the first time I've seen my mom in years if you include my lost memory." It was very hard to believe that a fixed trial could set the stage for a huge improvement on his life. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that he was convicted without reason.
'Wait a moment, what am I thinking?!' he thought. 'That isn't right at all!' It wasn't anywhere near right. To be charged for a crime people claimed he had committed... Why did it have to be him out of all people? What had he doen to them to deserve it? Before he was a slave, he was a beggar. All he did was sit on the street and wait for a kind soul to drop a penny or two. What was so wrong about it?

Reiba smiled slightly, then turned back towards the forest before them. "Well, that's understandable," was all he muttered. Soon, the palace grounds came back into view. But Kumori stopped at the sudden tug of the reins from his rider. "I don't really want to go back to the palace yet. Come, I want to show you something." The young king nodded at Shanya before he began dashing off back into the woods. Chidori followed obediently for ten minutes.
When the two horses stopped, there was the quiet sound of water somewhere in the distance. Reiba dismounted Kumori and helped Shanya get down from Chidori. "We're going to rest here for a bit. It's much better in the morning." Reiba muttered quietly, leaning against a tree and closing his eyes.

Shanya was a bit surprised to find out that the king didn't want to go back to the castle. But wasn't it a bad idea? If someone they couldn't trust knew that the king wasn't in the bedroom, then that person would try to search for him, right? And what would people say if they found out the 'former beggar' wasn't in the castle either? Shanya might be accused of many crimes that he couldn't even dream of comitting.
Then again, maybe the king can tell the prosecuting party otherwise, but would they listen? He hadn't wanted to turn Shanya into a slave just for sitting out on the streets, but the Council still made him do so. For all they knew, the same thing could happen even then. The Council could easily make the king convict Shanya of a crime that it was obvious he didn't commit.
Of course, the whole thing hasn't happened at all, so why worry now? There was no point in it and maybe whatever Shanya had been thinking about would never happen. There was no need to be concerned about something so unrealistic. How could those thoughts enter his mind?

When Reiba opened his eyes again, it was already morning. The water that he had fallen asleep to was now perfectly clear in the rays of sunshine that glimmered through the trees. "Shanya, wake up." Reiba whispered quietly. "This is my secret place, my getaway." He whispered, leading Kumori and Chidori toward the pond's edge to drink.
The sound that could be heard upon entering the area was a waterfall, which fell into a small pond against a rocky ledge polished smooth by years and years of water. There were wildflowers everywhere, and an eternal rainbow created by the flying droplets of water. This was the spot where his mother had given birth to him. "This is.... my home away from home." Reiba shrugged.

Before Shanya knew it, the sky was no longer dark and somehow he was in the middle of some kind of paradise. Everything looked as if it came out of a fairytale he once read. He was sure that he was still dreaming, though he wasn't aware of when exactly he had fallen asleep, but it seems that he was perfectly awake.
Just as Shanya was about to ask where they were, the king had already answered that question. Secret place? That meant nobody else knew about it, right? If that was the case, why did the king decide to bring Shanya here? The only answer to that question that the former beggar could think of was that it had to do with that friendship they supposedly shared many years ago. For some reason, he still didn't believe that they could possibly have been friends.

Reiba looked around the area. "I have a story to tell you..." He whispered to Shanya quietly, taking a seat at the edge of the pond. "A while ago, there was a small boy. He wandered here by himself, aimlessly, because he thought that it was allowed. But soon, an older boy came here claiming that this area was his. The smaller boy and the older boy got into a fight, and the older boy tried to drown the smaller one.
"But then the older boy realized that the younger one didn't know any better and saved him, giving him back the breath of life that he had tried to steal earlier. They were best friends ever since." Reiba finished. "Sorry 'bout that..." He turned around sheepishly with a smile on his face.

"Why are you apologizing?" Shanya asked, not really understanding. "Are you saying we were those children?" There seemed to be some connection, but he was mostly confused. To him, the story just came out at random and barely had any meaning. Of course, there were contradicting thoughts as well.
If the king was apologizing after telling a story, was that implying that, when they were kids, he had once tried to drown Shanya? If that was the case, the story must have taken place before the supposed friendship. It was strange, though. This hideout wasn't familiar in any way.

"Of course. I never tell fantasies of faerie tales. It's all just make believe crap that nobody believes in anyway." Reiba sighed with slight exasperation as he turned back toward the water. "I tried to drown you right here in this spot. You thrashed around a lot, so it was kind of hard to keep you underneath the water." The king said almost matter-of-factly, as if it was something normal that happened everyday. Of course... I drown one person per day on a daily basis. And since I didn't drown anybody yesterday, I have to drown two people today. Bwahaha, I'm so evil. Reiba thought sarcastically. Yeah, right.
He turned toward Shanya slightly, just to see a confused and calculating look plastered onto the boy's face. "You don't remember here, huh? This is where we first met. That was also the last time you ever saw here." Reiba sighed, kicking some water with his boot. "After all, this was my place. I didn't want to share it, even with my best friend." The boy said. "How selfish..."

"I don't really think it's selfish," Shanya said. "Everybody has a place that they don't want to share with other people. Those who do, however, are actually very generous." Of course, it didn't apply to everybody. Shanya didn't have any special place accept the alley he would live in, and that wasn't really something anyone would want to hang out in. It didn't bother him, though. Compared to other alleys, it was special for some reason.

Reiba laughed slightly, slipping off his shirt and boots as he did so. "Selfishness is a trait that a King should never have. They have to open up their arms to their kingdom, accept all criticism and praise but treat them both the same. Rule #18 to ruling a kingdom." Reiba repeated from a book that his father had given him titled The 1001 Rules to Ruling a Kingdom. At the time, it had seemed incredibly stupid. And yet, it still does.

"Is that why you brought me here?" Shanya asked, now a little curious. "If this has to do with selfishness, then I'll tell you that you don't have to share this place if you don't want to. Just try not to drown anyone else who wanders here." He laughed at his attempt to make a joke, but he knew very well that it wasn't very funny.
The rule that the king had told him was probably one of the most ignored. There were many kingdoms that don't follow that rule. Maybe those were the kingdoms where the monarch had no rules for him or her self.

Reiba shook his head slightly, allowing his bangs to fall over his face as he undid his pony tail. Guys wearing ponytails... maybe that's what made him gay. Oh wait, that was an opinionated statement. Not all pony-tail wearing guys are gay. But aside from his internal dilemma, Reiba shook his head again at Shanya.
"I didn't bring you here to make up for it." Reiba said quietly. "I just didn't want to go back to the castle. And if you're there and I'm not.. well.. with the blood in the bathroom they'll think you killed me or something." Reiba smirked quietly, jumping off the edge of the grass and landing in the water. "Come on in!" The king laughed quietly as he surfaced.

Shanya wondered if he should get in the water. He never remembered learning to swim, and he didn't like the thought of getting into the water that could have killed him. Deciding that he'd rather accept the king's invitation than sit on the grass all day, he also jumped into the water. But he had to keep near the shore where he could stand.
The water felt cold and strange, so Shanya wanted to jump back out, but he just stayed. A fear was spreading all over his body and he couldn't help but choke a little. Maybe this was some feeling that he had developed after almost drowning. He wasn't sure. He still had yet to remember the past.
