Isaac rubbed his nose tenderly. "No, I haven't eaten yet. Why don't we find somewhere to do that? You can pick." He retreated back into his own mind as he followed Ty.

"Cool. I thought I saw a café back there somewhere." He jerked his thumb over his shoulder, then stood on his toes and sniffed. "Yeah, I can smell the coffee from here." They followed the smell until, as Ty had predicted, there was a café.

Ty got himself a smoothie, and once they had sat down in some corner or another, asked, "So... I'm grateful to you that I'm, you know, still breathing," he joked, "but what makes you so quick to accept it?" He lowered his voice. "I mean, you do know that Cabal has the weres, don't you?"

Isaac shrugged. "I know that. But what's the point in generalizing you? I may not know everything there is to know about you, or weres, or the Cabal. But what I do know is that you were there when I needed you, and that I can count on you.

"And really, what else matter?" Isaac sipped his hot chocolate, staring off into space.

"Wow," Ty said, wonderingly. "You actually are a good human being." The intonation on word "good" made it clear he meant it in terms of morals. Of course, "human being" was just the default form for sentient life, nowadays. The man he had played chess with had told him it used to be different. "Doesn't seem to happen very often." In reality, it was the first time in a long time that the sense of "pack" had been so clearly verbalized to Ty. You know, on a deep, esoteric, and immutable level, that the pack will be there for you. And that's what matters.

He leaned his arms on the table they had found and looked up at the Clockie. "So what was it like working with the Chief Engineer? All that steampunk stuff is cool!"

Isaac blushed at the compliment, muted by Ty's words. He was glad when Ty continued.

"Oh, she's just amazing. I wish I could be as skilled as she is! I mean, sometimes people would compare my work to hers, but really, I'm nowhere near." He looked down at the table.

"You know, augmentation isn't all it's cracked up to be. Sometimes I wish that I could just be a normal mage, you know? Someone that isn't instantly recognizable as a Clockwork Knight. I mean, you disguised yourself. Why can't I do that? That's just what I think."

He sipped more chocolate.

"So... what bearing does it have on things... today?" Cassandra asked him, a thoughtful expression crossing her face. "I mean... So they knew each other, that makes sense. They're both leaders. 'History' makes it sound negative, and that makes sense, they're at war. But... what exactly...?"

"Well, apparently...." Carlyle drew the moment out. "Sai, Jose, and Rose knew each other personally and Sai got that Cyrus guy... well, you've heard about him, I'm sure. Sai is responsible for that because the angels tried to kill him when the Outlander Confederation seceded... so when you get down to it, it's really the angels fault. Sai just used a Lucifex Bomb to cover his a** when he had to make a break for it."

"Dude, you're talking to someone who can't be a mage at all. My parents at least explained that much to me." He took a moment to taste the fruity deliciousness of his smoothie. "You could probably out-do her, one day. And what's wrong with augs? You get golden eyes, you get an REF - instant Ghoster protection. And the eyes mean never having to hide. Because you can't." The golden eyes were awesome.

Isaac smiled into the rim of his cup. "I suppose so," he said after a few moments.

Ty was certainly good at making him feel better.

"Sai activated the Lucifex Bomb? That doesn't sound like self defense to me... it sounds like a way to get people killed, specifically. I don't... the Angels... are they responsible, or... damn, that doesn't really answer anything..."

"He activated it when the angels attacked him, to cover his getaway," Carlyle repeated slowly. "The angels went after him. For finding out they were going to backstab them. This is pure angelic bullshit."

Carlyle's words clicked; Cassandra hadn't understood before. "Wait. The Angels were... going to kill him, and... that's why... dear gods. Then... What else did you see? What happened? How did this come up? Were... were there Angels there?"

"Well," Isaac said, standing, "I see why they call it the 'Week-Long Hot Chocolate.' Didn't really make any sense before now."

He looked to Ty and said, "Let's go find Cassandra. Maybe we can find something to do around here."

Dang, Ty thought with the closest thing to despondency he experienced with any kind of frequency, I no longer have a smoothie. No reason to stick around.

"Sounds like a plan." He got up and headed out the door with Isaac to retrace their steps and find the other two.

The discussions of the various Coven recruits lasted deep into the artificial night; as the ambient light throughout the dome faded into relative darkness. They each found their own lodgings - even Ty, much to his chagrin, slept alone that night. They paid in the standard military time credits. The requirement of acceptance of military credits was the only major form of taxation, and military credits were the closest thing to a standardized factionwide currency. Additionally, it ensured debts couldn't be called in on those serving in the military.

The next morning the Coven crewmembers awakened, went about their various morning rituals, and (as was customary for any Coven members) logged into the nearest terminal to find a message stating they were required at the airship dock and to bring or store their possessions. It was clear to all of them that their two day leave was being cut short. Ty and Cassandra encountered each other on a street corner on their way to the dock; Carlyle and Isaac encountered each other in a plaza stretching out before the gates to the military base housing the Triumphant. Carlyle glanced at him and awkwardly turned away, heading towards the gates to the base.
