1. Again, real Phans care. Erik is NOT supposed to be hot.

Your right. I'm guessing Leroux wanted him to be a monster? I'm not sure ^^;; I'm still reading the book...

Yes. He was meant to be a hideously deformed villain. The antagonist to Christine's protagonist.

Erik is both Villain and monster, but I think what Leroux really wanted to show most was a more of a pitiful creature destined for greatness but robbed of it by his deformity. I believe above fear or hatred, Leroux wanted sympathy mixed with pity to be the overall feeling you get for Erik.
I'm almost 100% sure that was his intention just judging by other things he has written... I read this very very odd short story of his called a Terrible Tale and you do kinda feel bad for the antagonist(s)... I did... I also threw up.

I just hate being asked why his hair changed color after she removed the mask. How many times can one say, "IT"S A BLOODY WIG YOU MORON!"

We do not bump in here. Unless that is some joke or contribution to the thread that I failed to see.

Phantom Phan 4ever
1. 'Fans' (not true Phans) who see the 2004 movie and say: "He's so hot, only if he keeps the mask on"

2. 'Fans' that spell his name with a 'c' (Eric)

3. People that say he can't sing.

4. People that are repulsed by his 'deformity' (Which is really a sunburn)

5. People that ask: "Is there a book?"

I have new responses, now that I have been..."trained". XD

1. They talk of Gerik, not Erik himself. (Yeah, I get attached to the movie because it introduced me.)
2. I would just ask "Are you sure that you are referring to THE Erik???" I go the other way...I hear someone say "Eric" and I automatically re-spell it "Erik". XD
3. Well, he can. Just not as well as he should...
4. Gerik's deformity isn't that bad, except for the eye...freeks me out! But then there are some of the other versions... *runs and hides*
5. Obviously, those people aren't even fans. They are just mere people.

Yesh, all those -.-! AND, I hate it when people ask who Erik is...

Well, as a phan, there are little things that annoyed me about the movie in general.

I understand that ALW would want a young actress to play Christine, and I liked Emmy Rossum, but what annoyed the heck out of me is how they left a verse out of the Phantom of the Opera. "And in this labryinth when night is light, the phantom of the opera is here/there inside my/your mind." And what's funny is that Raoul and Christine mention that same verse later on the roof right before all I ask of you.

Gerard Butler was too young, too good looking, and not talented enough for the phantom. I'm not saying he's a bad actor, it's just his voice was too rough for Erik. Erik is many things, a sly seducer, a composer, an artist, as others have said, a genius. I didn't get that vibe for Butler. I didn't get that Erik has many facets to his personality. That he has crazy tendancies (murder, extortion, etc) but that he's also human and very tormented (crying, loving, wanting to fit in, horrified at his deformity).

I was so horrified at the so called "deformity" they gave Butler. I mean int he book the deformity was supposed to be really terrible, almost dead and skull-like.

As a phan, I hate it when people haven't read the book or even listened to the original cast recording and have no clue what's going on.

Another thing that bugs me is when people start to confuse fanfics with the real cannon PTO things, such as the book and play. It annoys me when people make Erik a fluffy little romantic to. He's romantic but not gushingly sickly romantic if you get what I mean?

I cant belive you dont think Butler did not do a good job. If you look at the movie and the plays they are the same style. Odviosly the book will be really different and its some times ( when your making a movie) to make it exact. I think the cast from the movie did a great job.

I have to say I got attached to the movie for a long time. I thought "It's good, it's good, it's good..." But then I FINALLY got to reading the books and all of a sudden it came zinging out to me:
"OMG! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?! HE'S SUPPOSED TO LOOK INTIMIDATING AND HAVE A BEAUTIFUL VOICE, NOT LOOK BEAUTIFUL AND HAVE AN INTIMIDATING VOICE! FOR PETE'S SAKE!"
And then I was like crying crying crying "Why didn't I know this all along?"

When Emma was obsessed with the 2004 and kept wanting to show it to me, I was freaked out because I thought "this phantom guy" was going to be hideously deformed (which I realize he actually should have been), and then Emma said it wasn't so bad. At the time I actually watched the movie a half a year later, I was a little shocked by his nasty-looking red bulges, but I had no idea that it was supposed to be much, much worse. Now I know. Yep. Now I know. And I've finally been bugged by the fact.
But hey, how can you make half a face into a skull anyway?

Well he's not supposed to look like some living skeleton as much as a corpse. So the skin would be yellow and stretched and sunken in, distorting his features and all.

@ Shinkokamari: The majority of this guild is pretty much against the 2004 film. My personal opinion is I don't like Gerard Butler as an actor. He always acts very cocky when he isn't handsome to begin with.

Also, he is a novice at singing, much less Broadway musicals. For it being his first time he did good, but they could've gotten a better candidate for the Phantom such as one of the current Phantoms that played onstage.
