Wendy giggled. "Definitely do not secretly know Czech," she assured her. "But yeah, that'd be great!"

"It will be much fun!" Mar smiled broadly. She suddenly felt more like a child than she had felt on the innumerable days she had spent climbing trees in the sunshine two summers ago. Thinking back on those days, her face turned red again with shame. She had spent her time in the trees kissing boys, and that was not a childish act. Two summers ago she met Glen, and two summers ago she found out she was going to be a mum. Then she thought about Ivana, and how much she loved her, and the blush disappeared. She would not be ashamed.
...If she wasn't ashamed, why did she hide it?
With sudden determination and affection for her younger friend, Mar gently grasped Wendy's hand. "We talk in corridor, yes please?" she whispered, her accent coming in heavier with nerves.

"All right!" Wendy said, following like a puppy, totally trusting. She looked back only to smile wide at Remus. Be right back! she mouthed through her grin.

Wendy skipped back into the Great Hall, smiling hugely and humming like some kind of toddler. She stopped when she reached Remus, Sirius, and Peter, who were still standing right where she'd left them. "Back!" she announced, as if they couldn't have deduced that for themselves.

Remus smiled, and his eyebrows rose a little when he saw how incredibly happy Wendy was. "Welcome back," he said politely. "What, exactly...?" he asked, looking toward the door where Marketa had yet to return.

"Marketa went to study," Wendy said in answer to Remus's questioning look toward the door. "And I have a best friend now!" She stated this proudly, puffing out her chest like a kid with a new toy. Then she dropped her charade and giggled. "Sorry - just can't remember the last time anyone's called me their best friend. Well, unless you count the sods I do homework for."
"Hey!" Peter cried, looking affronted.
"Whoops! I mean... er... sorry Peter..." Wendy blushed and shifted her eyes downward.

Remus smiled. "Ignore him, he's needy," he said casually, pushing Peter back toward the table with his foot. "And congratulations on your new best friend." He grinned a little awkwardly at her exclamation that she'd rarely had a best friend; boys didn't exactly acknowledge what was there, so no one had ever really called him their best friend either. "If only boys were so open as girls, eh?"

Wendy giggled. "Boys don't have to be - my theory is that they usually have a pretty good idea of what they've got without having to be told, even if it's only subconscious," she explained. "Girls on the other hand, are pitiful and needy and therefore need to be reminded every so often."

Remus let out a quick bark of laughter before pressing his fist to his mouth. After he was under control again, he carefully composed himself. "I suppose you're right, though, all joking aside. Guys know that the feeling's there, they're just far too manly to show their true emotions without wrestling afterwards."

Wendy giggled in a high-pitched voice, imagining a scene:
"Remus, you know you're my best friend, right?" says Sirius, looking uncomfortable.
"Uh, well, yeah... But thanks anyway, mate. You're, uh... you're my best friend..... too..."
There is a brief silence in which both boys feel supremely awkward.
Then Sirius tackles Remus to the ground and the two boys are a tangle of limbs and laughter.
By this time in her imaginings Wendy is doubled over with laughter and Peter is staring at her strangely. She takes a deep breath. "S-sorry. Imagination - ha! - got away from me... Hehehehehehe!!!"

Remus could practically see what Wendy was thinking:
"Pads?"
"Moony?"
"You uh...you know you're my best mate, right?" Remus delivered a sharp punch to his friend's tedner upper arm. Sirius squealed in pain.
"Of course Moony. You're my best mate too," he groaned as he rubbed his arm, before elbowing Remus in the kidney.
"I see what you mean," he agreed with a little half-smirk on his face.

Suddenly, Wendy started laughing harder. "Imagine if girls were like that!"

An exaggeratedly dreamy expression crossed Remus's face as he gazed into space. "It would give so little meaning to the words 'Cat Fight,'" he said with false regret.

"Well yes, but on the other hand I could just clock a girl whenever I wanted and claim that it was because I loved them so much. Be like, 'Oi, Jolette!' sock 'er in the arm, walk away; 'Oh, you're my best mate, by the way!' " She gave a toothy grin. "I'd get called out eventually, but it'd be fun for a solid few days, at least."

"Jolette, you say?" pondered Remus, peering across the Hall at the brunette Ravenclaw. "You know, we could give her a 'sock in the arm', metaphorically speaking of course," he suggested.
