"U...uh.." Xyn couldn't help but blink his eyes in confusion. He didn't care much for Shinichi's posturing, but what was this about him being out of breath? His breathing as much as anything else was under control, and, wait, didn't this man say just a moment ago to increase his breathing rate? What kind of instructor was this? Xyn simply didn't know how to respond to such a person. He closed his slightly parted mouth, resisting the urge to bite down on his lip as if he were going to respond. He didn't want to be drawn into a pointless discussion.
"..." Since running away wasn't an option, Xyn simply walked passed Shinichi as if the man wasn't there, lowering his eyes for a moment. He stopped after 3 steps, however, a sudden stop as if he had just locked on to something in the distance.
"Faster... than books..." Xyn took another step, then turned around.
"The man who sought all-knowing ventured the world to gain the knowledge of lands and ages passed. A lifetime spent in constant journey." Xyn lifted his head just slightly, his eyes still fixed to a point on the ground.
"From what this man recorded, the next man who sought all-knowing spent only a year, never leaving his land, to gain the knowledge he sought. That man died a life without fulfillment. Book of Burdens 5:27." Xyn turned back around and continued walking, speaking very softly to himself, but still audible, "I walk a path of fulfillment. The effort I expend will grant me greater knowledge and power. I'll surpass that person." Xyn halted once again, turning his head over his shoulder to glanced at Shinichi. The man was a skilled shinobi, that much he couldn't ignore. Well... maybe...
"... if you believe yourself so knowledgeable, I will entertain your proposal."

When he came closer to the kid, Shinichi wrinkled his nose. His breathing was... normal. Was he just playing with the man by running so slow, then? There was just something off about the boy, although he didn't say anything for fear of being a hypocrite. If there was something off about Xyn, there was something REALLY off about him. Shinichi closed his eyes as he listened to Xyn recite something from the Douken book. "Wise words," he muttered, "On the premise that knowledge gives fulfillment." It wasn't said in a mocking tone, but merely conversational, as if making a neutral comment on a work of art, for example. In essence, he made it sound like he was inviting a lively debate on the topic.
"Alright, knots." The Kage scaled a tree and pulled down a sizable vine, about two centimetres thick and without a bend or snag anywhere. The vine coloured a beautiful dark green, with frequent light green dashes and a bright yellow stripe that ran on the underside. It would be easy to differentiate when Xyn was learning knots. Plus, the material was flexible, but sturdy, meaning it wouldn't snap while providing the strong support expected of any rope. Just to be sure, Shinichi practised some knots of his own, chatting while he tested out and prepared the rope, "I traveled a lot in my youth, all over the mainland. When our battalion traded with some Earth Country smugglers, we picked up knot art. I think they called it macrame. I made a few extra meals selling what I made. Now I don't pretend to be an expert on knots; Every fisherman knows more than me. However, I do have knowledge in a few basic knots that were useful in many ways beyond pretty patchwork."
Finished testing out the rope, Shinichi snapped it in half and handed one half to Xyn. He motioned for him to follow him to the nearest tree with branches low enough to practice knots on. "The first one you probably already know, but you should be able to tie this one one-handed and blindfolded. The square knot...also called a reef knot..." Shinichi demonstrated, first going right over left, then left over right. "If you tie this one wrong, it's called a granny knot. Both aren't the best of knots, but they're useful for tying together light or no baggage. If you tie it with cloth, the knot lies flat and so we use it for bandages often." Shinichi finished and did it again, this time much slower so Xyn could follow along. He did it again, then at will whenever Xyn would prompt him to. "Now, you try."

Shinichi watched with an uncharacteristic patience as Xyn struggled with the knots, messing up those simply rope twists in more ways than he could have imagined. He tried giving the boy as much help as he could, but after a couple of hours, the man gave up. Shinichi had now showed Xyn each of the three basic knots at least a dozen times and he knew that the boy could see it in his mind. There was just trouble getting the knots matched to muscle memory. "I have work to do, Xyn," Shinichi declared, hopping to his feet, "Why don't you keep working on those knots and then come find me at the end of the day, okay?" The Kage nodded to the boy before disappearing in a blur.

It seemed Shinichi misunderstood. Knowledge alone was worthless without the means to use it. Gaining such knowledge through experience was what gave the man fulfillment... well, that didn't matter. Xyn was not the type to give such a lecture. Shinichi could take whatever meaning he wanted from the passage. The boy's concern quickly shifted to vine laid across both his hands. He wondered from the kage's explanation if the man would literally expect Xyn to wear a blindfold while performing the knot with one hand... it would be an interesting challenge, but seemed excessive even as a suggestion. He pulled at the vine to test it himself, not really caring for Shinichi's explanations. Xyn was only interested in a certain style of knots, something that would compare with Sorri's jutsu. The boy only went only with such a task because, afterall, learning the basics was important, and seeing a demonstration was much better than following a diagram in a book. He would simply learn these knots to figure out the style he needed.
"Then..." Xyn took a moment to get a feel for the vine. The somewhat slippery texture worried him, but it was not as though there was a comparable source for a rope. He'd mostly have to make similar uses of the environment unless he planned to carry a rope with him at all times... maybe as a belt...
Xyn violently shook his head, realizing his thoughts were getting off track. A square knot... it was a simple name, perhaps too simple. He attempted the first loop around the branch, but pull on both ends too soon and watched as the knot fell apart. Quickly noticing what he had done wrong, he picked the ends back up and looped then over the branch. His fingers fumbled with the knot for a few seconds, not used to doing such delicate work. Once he was satisfied, he pulled on the vine again, only to see the ends of the vine fall apart just as before. Had he really made the same mistake twice in a row? Even from doing the knot wrong, he was starting to realize this wasn't the style he needed. It could secure things as Shinichi suggested, but it didn't seem that reliable when linking ropes. The thought crossed his mind to ask for another demonstration, but just as the fleeting thought faltered, Shinichi had excused himself. Xyn knew the man had work as the kage, which is why he didn't understand how Shinichi came to be in the forest in the first place. It did not seem as though he had some business here... well, maybe he'd find some answer at the end of the day. For now...

Xyn cracked his knuckles, his normally stern patience and slow approach wavering to the idea that he was taking too much time to do a task he found pointless. Such was a normal case in the academy, but he was a genin now. He thought that he was finally able to train the way that would benefit his individual skills, not the skills of a group. Even so, getting experience with any knot was of some benefit even if it wasn't a knot he would be using. He tried to keep a mental picture of the end product that Shinichi had shown him, but doing so only prevented him from going through the correct process. Inside and outside... outside and inside... did it matter which approach he made? He knew there was something small he was missing. He was used to tying only one end of a string or rope to something, so tying two ends together made him focus on one side while the other side became unsecured. He straightened the rope and placed the ends together several times to try and use both his hands in the same pattern. He had to do the same thing with his left hand that he did with the right hand, not realizing how difficult such a thing could be.
Shifting his methods slightly, he kept the left end bent and tried to hold the position while looping the other end. He managed to make the knot once, but with far more effort than he cared for. His only choice was to do it again and again until it was second nature. IF the new kage should ask him to perform one of the knots, he didn't want to take one or two minutes of the man's time to do something that should take a second. Making the knot once did not mean he could repeat the process easily, either. Once both ends of the vine were looped within each other, he only completed the knot through trial and error, so making the knot a second or even third time had no benefits unless he memorized the correct method. He knew he was thinking too hard, but not thinking hard enough also seemed to be a problem. He looped the ends in what seemed to be a knot, but not the correct knot, even with several tries. Xyn was just now realizing taking on even the simplest task he had no experience with was just as bothersome as taking on a major task within his ability. Having never used many knots in the past was making this one task unbearably complicated.

Wait...
After making the wrong knot for the 5th time in a row, Xyn started to see what was wrong. He was going under and then over in the middle of the loop. In order to make the knot that Shinichi had shown him, he had to keep the knot underneath the loop before pull it over. He pulled it apart one last time before placing the ends together. He placed a mental picture of the finished knot in his mind while he placed the ends together, then cleared his mind and tried to avoid his mistake. Right over left... at this point is where he accidentally pulled the knot in his first tries. Left over right... it was reversing this that resulted in the previous wrong knots. He didn't bother to see if the other knots would hold, he simply wanted to complete the correct knot. That was it... Ah! That really was it. Xyn pulled the knot apart to try again. This time he kept the end result in his mind and didn't imagine the process. He couldn't make the knot if he constantly had to think about it. He had some difficulty still, but quickly found the mistake again.
"... no errors." Xyn kept trying until the method was perfect. There was no point learning something if he couldn't do it right every time. The was the purpose of knowledge. If it could not be apply correctly each time, then it would have no use at all. Wasted knowledge...
Making the knot correctly for the third time, Xyn shifted to making it faster. He wanted to use these kinds of knots in battle, so he had to learn to do it efficiently, especially under stress. With nothing to simulate battle conditions, his only goal at the moment was doing it as fast as possible, eventually doing it without thinking. He reconsidered Shinichi's comment about doing the knot blindfolded with one hand... well, maybe one-handed would be of some benefit. With just the first try, he was able to do it. First using his whole hand, then using only three fingers after the third try. Now that he could do it properly, the pattern seemed so simple... how could he have had so much trouble with it? Well, maybe now the next knot would take a great deal less time.

Next in Shinichi's instructions was something called a clove hitch. From what little reading he had managed to complete, he already knew he had absolutely no use for this not. Still, he didn't want to simply dismiss the lesson. Next time he'd have to find a better place to hide...
He couldn't figure out what such a knot could be used for, but he had to at least make it before he could figure such a thing out. He thought such a knot would be too simple to get wrong. The first try still ended in the knot slipping lose from the branch. The knot didn't ravel apart like the mistakes he made with the square knot, it simply slipped out of place. Xyn wasn't sure what he had done wrong at first, if he had actually done anything wrong. From the way the finished knot looked, it might have been adjustable. It was a major complication trying to decide if the knot was made improperly or if he made it correctly and slipped it out of place. At this point the boy's fingers were starting to get tired. Gripping a weapon and tying a knot were entirely different. He never realized how inexperienced he was at such a little thing, which made him more determined to continue.

There was no point in twisting these vines around with his fingers starting to twitch of their own will. Making the first not had taken a strain he hadn't foreseen. It was probably best to go back to his books and find this particular knot so he could decide if it was really useful. He thought at first he should learn it no matter what if Shinichi suggested it, but Xyn never told the kage the purpose for learning the knots. Maybe if he explained some detail about his goals, Xyn would be given a more appropriate task.
Taking a moment to review the square knot, it only took a few seconds to complete it. The more often he used it, the more he seemed to like it. It wasn't the style he needed, but he had some ideas about how he could use it. This second knot, on the other hand, did not look near as promising. Even before making the square knot, he had a more optimistic view than he did of this clove hitch. Deciding to try a different angle, Xyn stretched the small length onto the tree to stand over a branch that could support his weight. It would give his arms a little rest to reach down rather than reaching across.

((2 fails to make one success twice in a row... somewhat annoying, but better than 10 fails in a row I guess.))
His short break ending, Xyn dangled the vine at his side in his right hand, sliding it across his left palm until the other end of the rope was gripped in the left hand. Both the square knot and the clove hitch had a pattern in their designs. Making slow movements, he could see the two loops the made up the knot were basically identical. All he had to do was pull the end of the rope through the proper place. If he pulled the rope underneath the second loop, it would be complete. There were two things he realized once he made the knot. The first was that, as expected, only after making the knot properly did he see how simple it was, although it still seemed less complicated than the square knot, and even less useful to him. The second thing he noticed, the most annoying of the two, was that he really did make the knot correctly the first time. His only mistake was leaving too much slack in the line and testing it by pulling from the bottom end where the rope was longer rather than from the top. Going over the whole thing in his head, it was only now that he saw how boring this all was. There had to be a better way to test the knot rather than tying it to a tree branch.
Shinichi had said something about the local fisherman and boaters. There couldn't be anything interesting a boater's knot could be used for, but fishing had possible applications. The way fishing lines were thrown into the waters to hook prey was a more desirable method than any to apply to battle. Maybe he was better off asking for their advice rather than being ambushed by the kage.

This was the final task, and with all his work, the day had slowly faded away. Usually Xyn would go steadily to bed at such an hour, but his unsettling dreams had forced him into an irregular sleep pattern. He felt neither tired nor awake for most of the day, and it seemed that he could fall asleep at any moment, or stay awake the entire night. At any rate, he definitely wasn't falling asleep before he was done.
The last knot that Shinichi charged him with was something called a bowline. It was getting hard to remember the specifics of the knot since so much time had passed. After practicing so much with the other knots, his fingers were feeling pretty nimble, so he simply decided to start experimenting with the makeshift rope until he could recall what it was Shinichi did. Even if he didn't accomplish it properly, he figured he could do what he could and explain later. Surely the man wouldn't expect him to do all this work purely from the memory of having it demonstrated once... or did he...? Xyn started to realize he didn't really know Shinichi or his intentions well enough to start making assumptions of his character.
Slowly wrapping the rope into loop after loop while trying to get the desired shape, Xyn couldn't help but notice something. This not looked similar to a noose, but probably not as effective. He figured that a noose was probably in the same family of knots, since it used a sliding adjustment like the other two knots he had already completed. It was such a feature that made the knots hard for him to figure out because they kept slipping, which also made them uninteresting to use for battle.
Xyn made one loop, casually looking at what he was doing, then wrapped the rope farther down to his elbows as he held his hands at eye level, making another loop. Starting to focus more, the memory of Shinichi's demonstration started to come back. He pulled the tip of the rope through the first loop, wrapped it around the top of the rope, then pulled it back down the same loop to make the knot. The boy didn't quite understand what such a knot could be used for, or if he truly did it right, but this was the way he remembered it. Giving his brow a short massage, Xyn immediately began retying the not a few times. He wanted to be sure he could demonstrate it and the other knots to Shinichi. He wasn't looking for the man's approval, but since Xyn was given a task, he wanted to be sure to show he accomplished it to the letter.
"Maybe..." Xyn straightened the rope and placed it in one of the pockets within the cloak. The only thing he had left to do was search for Munin. There were only a few places the bird would go, and they both involved other food... or girls... Xyn dreaded having to search for Munin if it were the latter, but if he wasn't going to bed, he might as well keep the owl-ish night prowler from causing trouble.

((Let's try this mood)) This forest... it felt like a while since Xyn had last spent his time here. Most of his time in this place was wasted searching for Munin. He couldn't understand why the creature made this place his home, but he had grown to keep the place as a refuge from the rest of the village. A dark forest of buried memories... Xyn nearly chuckled at the familiarity of such a thought. The place hadn't changed much since the Spring. The damage that was done was of no importance, the forest had already taken on the appearance of a dying world. Even so, whether before the Spring or now, life continued as it was...
Munin let out three loud kaws, causing Xyn to pause near the entrance. It only took a second for another kaw to resound from within the forest, and with that message, Munin immediately flew off toward Hugin's location. Whatever danger was here, there was no point jumping into action on his own, so the boy merely stood back and examined the surroundings. The place was more treacherous than it was before, but having gotten used to avoiding the poisonous animals and hazardous paths, Xyn didn't see the recent changes as anything to worry about. This new illness, however...
The Douken boy had not been here since the beginning of the Spring, so he wasn't sure what to expect. The moisture in the air, the slick dirt underneath his feet. The stench of decaying wood... taking in the surroundings, Xyn was starting to grow unsure of why he found such a place calming. Maybe it was nothing but the solitude. Most forests were filled with the sounds of wild creatures. Most of the animals in this place stayed hidden, either to keep from being eaten, or to wait for something to make their meal. That he could understand. The humans beyond the area on the other hand...
Xyn took a few more steps over the path. It would probably be best to get Hugin one of those vaccines, but she was more secluded than ever. Even he was unable to find her without Munin specifically at his side. Well... if this mission was a success, he probably wouldn't have to worry about her.Xyn Daily Observations 1d20 + Detect(0) +Int(7) DC: 20 Train: 3/6

A steady yawn weakened Xyn's stance as he continued to wait. He had taken several steps farther along the path than he had intended in a normal pacing pattern, but now his legs sought refuge from the light exercise as Xyn's body grazed the side of a tree, his weight leaning into it as he rested. The angle of his shadow hadn't changed by much, so it was still morning... where had that Sorri gone? Maybe he hadn't gotten vaccinated yet. At any rate...
Unwilling to sit on the ground, Xyn continued to cast his eyes towards the tops of the trees. Munin hadn't gotten back yet. He began to wonder where that creature had gone... but such thoughts were useless. He couldn't help but think if maybe Munin and Sorri were alike somehow...
His head raising higher, he glanced at the branches of the tree he was using to balance himself. What was it that book said... he should be able to make string from the bark of the old willows in this forest. The only problem was the moist air and damp ground. He'd need dry wood for such a project. Well, if no one was coming anytime soon...
Xyn pushed off of the tree with his right hand, his left hand brushing the hair away from his left eye. He might as well get a fire going, if not for his own purposes, maybe it would attract some of these infected animals more quickly. Better they come out in the open then for someone to be searching and get caught by surprise. The area he was in definitely didn't have anything suitable, so he probably had no choice but to move deeper.

Where exactly would there be a dry spot in such a dank place? The trees in some parts of the forest were packed so closely together that it looked more like a cave than a thicket. The lack of sunlight in such parts should have kept them from growing so high, but the mix of small and large trees seemed to be unaffected. The paths seemed to have changed dramatically in only a few months. Several trees were now blocking his usual routes. Much of the soft ground had collapsed into ditches and trenches, with many trees reaching low over the paths. It was only a short time, yet this place seemed so unfamiliar, just like the village.
Xyn figured that while he was exploring the forest, he might as well try to make a mental map. He would probably have to keep all his senses alert if he was going to both go in farther while avoiding any dangerous animals and find his way back once he had gathered the wood for a fire.
Once Xyn had reached a clearing where some sunlight could be seen, he took the time to look for a dry spot. If the sun could reach this location, there had to be dry wood. He stood in the middle of the small expanse, the clearing reaching only a few feet in any direction, then walked to the closest tree. He examined it for a moment, then gently placed his hand along the bark. He looked at the next lowest tree a few steps away and did the same. It was definitely a dry area. Reaching again for the kunai behind his back, he tried to decide whether to climb the tree or simply cut all the low-lying limbs in the clearing. Climbing was probably more of a risk than he needed to take at the moment, so he grabbed hold of the branch directly above him and began cutting into it. About the length of his arm and near the same thickness, Xyn misjudged the weight and was forced to kick off of the tree to avoid the limb falling on him. Managing to stay on his feet during the quick stunt, Xyn took a quick breath and took one of the ends in his left hand to drag it to the next tree. He wasn't sure how much wood he would need, making him wonder if he should have brought something to carry it... well, if needed, he could use his cloak to bundle everything together.

This place always seemed as though it was cut off from the outside world. Sunlight hardly ever reached this inner world. People rarely roamed the scarcely-numbered paths. Even the animals were hidden away, most of them avoiding the other animals. Even the most dangerous animal had a predator, such was one of the many natural rules that maintained balance in this world. Even before the events of the Spring, this forest was a solitary place. It was that aspect that made Xyn feel at home here. It's physical characteristics were unpleasant, but the idea of the place...
Xyn closed his eyes and raised his head upward as he felt a stray sunbeam on his face, seemingly piercing his thoughts. As dark and dank as this place was, even a little sunlight had to seep through in some way...
Xyn grunted as he dropped his head back down, adjusting the strands of his hair back over his left eye. He started to notice the sound of wings flapping through the trees. He couldn't tell which direction it was coming from, but he knew he was somehow getting closer to Hugin and Munin. At the very least, those two seemed to feel at peace in this bleak place, maybe that was enough. There was no point in dwelling on the reasons behind something so simple.
His mind back on his task, Xyn came to another clearing, still dragging the bits of wood he had collected for the fire. The wood from the willow trees probably didn't need to be dry since he would be boiling it, but it was best not to test that theory. The cloak slumped against a rather large rock in the boy's path, causing him to forcibly let go. It was a miracle that Xyn had managed to step over it and not trip. The rock was covered in dirt and moss, probably from mild flooding in the area, and it fell in the shadow of a tree angled against the rising sun, making the area even darker than the rest of the clearing. Xyn decided not to dwell on such a thing and searched for a willow tree. There were plenty to choose from in this part of the village. A place called sorrow was the perfect place for a tree nicknamed weeping willow to grow.
Despite the fact the clearing showed signs of flooding, the trees were noticeably dry. The water probably receded from another part of the forest. At any rate, this was a good sign. He might be able complete his project sooner than expected. Since the branches of the willow trees sloped down, it made it much easier to cut them. Pulling on one of the stretchy limbs, Xyn took a moment to gauge the weight beforehand and cut the limb off at the point where he was sure it wouldn't be too heavy. He thin took a moment to cut off the section of the limb that was too thin, quickly realizing he could use that portion as firewood as well. With that task done, he quickly tossed the wood into the cloak and made sure the bundle was together before continuing down the path. He would eventually reach the chasm at this rate...

This... was the limit of his ability.
Xyn stood at the end of the path that would have reached the chasm. He had wanted to see the great scar in the earth, the true face of the damage that had been done to this place, the way the rest of the village revealed itself so openly, but all he could see in front of him was the ground rolling down before him, the path littered with trees that had no chance of escaping the fallen soil. He stood at the very edge of the path before it sloped into what was probably the most dangerous section of the forest. In something of a state of disbelief, Xyn started to look around for another path, but many of the trees to the side of the path had forcibly leaned toward the chasm like dominoes, the only force keeping them from toppling over being their deep roots. Even though no one was around, Xyn tried not to show his frustration with his usual elongated sigh. It would probably take a great deal of time to find another path past this section. He couldn't see any ground past this point, so going any farther might lead to him being trapped. Any random tree to give way to a deep trench if he wasn't careful, and Xyn knew he didn't have the skill to judge his properly where to step in such a situation. This chasm... he wondered if this scar was much larger, maybe much deeper than he imagined. For all he knew, the entire area as far as he could see from his current point could be the entire chasm. As well as he could navigate the forest, he had never explore enough of it to understand how vast it was, and why would he? If he went too deeply, very few people would be able to find him if he were poisoned or injured.
Since there was no clearing to check for dry wood or willow trees, Xyn started to look at the wood along the path. He turned his head around first, glancing over his right shoulder before maneuvering his body as he turned completely around. Stepping over his cloak, he took his attention away from the trees only long enough to make sure he didn't trip over the bundled wood, then proceeded back down the path. It couldn't be helped, he would have to double back and pick a different path. Going through the trees to find a new path would leave him too open to any of the animals that might feel he was threatening their territory, or those animals simply looking for food and not wanting to come out in the open.
Xyn considered climbing up and moving through the trees, but the wood he had gathered would be too heavy for such a thing. He could lift the bundle, but if he somehow dropped it from the treetops, it would scatter across the ground and be difficult to gather up again. It was best to do as he had been doing.
