The wire sizzled as the farm girl thrust it into the snow again, cooling the metal just enough so that she could work with it. Orika tested the flaming rod by bending the ends together against a log and when the wire refused to budge easily, she thrust it into the fire again, rebent it, and repeated the process until she received a bendable rod. Next, the girl decided to get a little creative. There wasn't much wire, but just enough to make a small heart. Orika glanced over at Karite and smiled without saying anything. If this wasn't love, it was the closest she'd ever been. The girl hopped to her feet, giggling when she didn't feel any pain, and ran off in the nearby area looking for an appropriate stick. It needed to be something strong and yet forked so that she could better grip and control the wire. When Orika found what she'd been looking for, she returned and took her seat again, reheating the metal for the umpteenth time. In truth, the girl loved the repetition as each time she made the metal a little more workable, a little more suited to her liking. She liked the fiery warmth on her frontside in strict contrast to the cold, the danger of the ever giving, ever burning fire. As the fire worked its magic, Orika looked up to see the boy now making conversation with both Shisei and Maya. The thing that caught her eye was the old scars in one of his eyes, covered by an eyepatch. They were too straight to be caused by a knife. Suddenly overcome by curiosity, Orika stopped her work and stared at Xyn, but looked away before he could see her examining him.

Karite was not taken back at all by Shisei's words but if he thought that he was not competition he was mistaken. "Shisei, I still considered you my friend if you would allow us to be. You seem to push me away further and further but I guess that is who you are." Karite was taken back by what Shisei said about that night. "You may have witnessed everything you needed in the farmhouse but you know we truly never fought each other. If you took our fight as a insult I apologize. Where I come from friends fight to better each other and strengthen friendships. One thing we do have in common so far is the fact that Tanu is our only enemy. The question is who will beat her first?" Karite formed the same hand sign as before. Thinking on Shisei's words, he seemed backwards which was odd. He expected his behavior not to bring some kind of retaliation. "Shisei, I understand somewhat where you are coming from, but this is hard to say. How about this, I will calm down on my actions of hostility towards you and I will talk to Orika in the same if you stop threatening us and try working with us." Closing his eyes looking inside himself for the energy he was thrown off by what Shisei asked him. "I came to Shimagakure not like most people to run for their lives, or to escape some tyrant. I came here so I could find out who I am. I came here to find a family. As far as becoming a shinobi, I am still not sure what that is or what it entails, but so far it has seemed to be to bad." Karite closed his eyes again and silenced the world around him but still picked up on a pair of footsteps that didnt belong to anyone on the grounds and then realized it was Xyn when he heard the voice. "Good to hear from you to Xyn."

"I..."

Xyn's body twitched in several directions before he slid his right leg up and turned on his left knee to look at Maya. Not realizing she had moved so close, he immediately slammed the journal shut and tried to look up, almost falling over himself to lean back. Gone? Where would he go?

I would never leave you.

The words he wanted to say came within an instant, but it took every ounce of his strength to hold his lips back, even though a single small word slipped out. How could he say something so impulsive? He continued to loose his balance before slapping both his hands on the ground, which only proved to be a bad idea. The ground was freezing, even for this Douken whose clan thrived in cold weather, and his hands were bare. He lifted his hands up quickly, his balance giving once again, but miraculously saved as his reflexes pulled his legs upward. He staggered for a bit, trying his best to face Maya. It was always like this, whenever Maya was close. He didn't know whether to move closer or move away.

"I..." He said again, realizing he was stuttering, something Xyn normally would never do, "thought I would... visit." Finally regaining control of all his muscles, he looked down at Baki, his right hand weakly forming something that resembled a wave. The only thing that could have torn him from this long-awaited moment was Shisei's rude tone. If there was anything he despised more, it was a lack of understanding of basic manners.

"... excuse me." He took a step away from Maya so that he and Shisei could face each other. A groan filled the air as he thought of what to say.

"... bothersome." Xyn turned his head just slightly away from the boy. His comment about the time of day wasn't directed at anyone, and he dared to speak to him in such a manor.

"When asking for someone's name, it's proper to introduce yourself first." Xyn's tone only grew angrier from the thought that Shisei was annoying Maya, although his face would never show such an emotion, not if Xyn could prevent it.

"... Think before you speak." His mood constantly swerving between bad and good, he decided that Karite deserved a greeting at least slightly better, but all that he managed was a small acknowledgment, making eye contact and a short bow of the head before facing Maya again. All his movements took place in a small circle that was barely half his full stride. Somewhere in his movements, he managed to flip open the journal to jot down his next thought, doing so and closing it again to keep Maya from reading it.

A memory of something lost, something never wanted

Trying his best not to be shy in front of her, although the meaning of shyness always escaped him, he attempted to look her in the eye as he spoke.

"You are... well?"

Maya took an small, involuntary space back, lowering her gaze from Xyn's and nodding slightly. It would appear to most anyone that Xyn was the upperclassmen, and Maya the pupil. In truth, Maya wasn't sure what to say - she'd thought he would leave, like everyone else. But he was still around ... and it threw her for a spin, because it wasn't at all what she had been expecting. She bit her lip, watching Baki, who had sauntered up to Xyn and sat next to the boy, growling softly and demanding his ears scratched with their insistent flicking. And Maya ...

Maya took another small step back, licking the blood from her lip. She'd have to learn to stop biting it soon. But..

"I'm...you're still here..." she whispered, the shock evident in her voice. She failed to find anything else to say, and her chin began to tremble. She was confused, unsettled - she had known everyone around her to leave or die. Xyn was still here - and, if he was to be believed, Karite planned on staying around too. But what would happen if the same old patterns held true? Could Maya survive the repercussions?

...Probably not.

The girl held her own hands behind her back, looking around and setting her gaze on the hides she had started to cure. In another day and a half they would be done, like her own...the trio would have their own building supplies to make their own tents, if they decided hers weren't good enough. But they wouldn't be around long, just until Shinichi-sama decided they could each go on their merry way. But her thoughts were roaming...

Xyn stood before her, writing something that she knew she wouldn't be able to read (his intelligence, of course, was far superior to hers), and she had no way of really helping him besides pointing at the squiggles and hoping she'd correctly guessed what they meant...

She chose to waive the thoughts and pointed to each student.

"Karite. Shisei. Orika," she said quietly, dropping her hand before remembering...

"Kore." Maya tucked her hands into her pocket, and bit her lip again, hoping that she had helped him by telling him their names.

Xyn wasn't sure what to do with Baki. Despite having a pet, he didn't understand animals. Munin mainly took care of himself. Sometimes it seemed as if Xyn was Munin's pet. Obviously the creature wanted something, so he let his hand brush against the top of his head, skittishly moving around before he actually started scratching his ears.

"Is that strange?" Xyn tried to respond to Maya's comment, although he hated the idea of answering a question with a question, but he didn't know what to say next. It took most of his concentration just to keep from smiling. It would be fine if no one else was around, but he hated smiling...

He only nodded when Maya called out everyone's names, rather than wonder why she was doing it. He had made such a comment to Shisei, she was probably trying to introduce everyone. He gave each person a glance before turning to her again.

"Why are they all here?" Normally his thoughts would focus on the fact that he shouldn't care about such a thing, but he was wanted to be slightly more honest about his thoughts when around her.

The youth continued his stretch position, pulling at fibers of his muscles. Despite the cold his body was beginning to feel the burn. Legs, back, abdominal. It was becoming an irritating feeling, but something the snake was enjoying. It was making his body stronger. “Twenty five… twenty six…” His ears picked up on what the boy was saying. Karite was more cool and calm in his speaking than usual. It was something that Shisei was not expecting. The teen even apologized for the insult at the farmhouse. As the snake child listened he felt slightly thrown off by this tranquil talk. Once Karite was done, pale lips made their presence known. “Whoever can find Tanu-kun first I guess. Or perhaps whoever she finds first. I do not know much about her, but she seems to be one looking for a fight. I don’t see your need to fight her, but if that is what you want to do I will not stop you. I will fight her sooner or later regardless of whether I am the first or last.” The boy grunted a bit when his mind had hit the thirty eighth second but he still persevered. “Thirty nine… forty…”. The next details had to do with his peers. Once again Shisei breathed out his opinion. “Aggression or pacifism is up to you and Orika. I will adjust to the situation regardless of what you to do. Don’t think though I’m not going to speak my mind just because you or her feelings are hurt. I speak the truth. That is all.”. What was more interesting to Shisei though was Karite’s reason of being here. It was a family the boy was looking for. His reasons for being a shinobi were missing though. To the maverick these were short term goals and weak ideals. He couldn’t lose to someone like that. Still there was nothing wrong with having the wish of a family. That is why Shisei did not reply to his desire. Instead another question bogged him. “To find a family? Does that mean you don’t have a family? Are you an orphan?” the Orochi boy questioned maintaining his position.

He was peaceful despite the amount of people around him. That is until the new youth said something. What was his name? Xine or Xyn. Something along those lines. “I only politely ask significant people Xyn.” The snake stated purposely using his name to show he acquired it without needing to use manners. The shrouded teen and Maya began to converse. Shisei decided to carefully watch the interaction. This was interesting because Maya seemed different with this boy around.

Baki's low growls of satisfaction almost drowned out Maya's response. With a small, sad smile, she answered him honestly: "Yea...it's....different." With a glance towards the trio, she shrugged.

"They tried to kill each other. Shinichi-sama wants them to be a team," she said coolly, as though it were the most natural thing in the world. Her gaze lingered for a few minutes before she turned back and pointed at his journal, biting her lip once more and sending fresh droplets of blood to the surface of the wound. "You're writing...what do the squiggly lines say?" she asked, almost whispering. Unlike Xyn, Maya knew Karite and Shisei didn't know she couldn't read. Orika might have had an inkling, but otherwise, no one had ever stayed near her long enough to really understand she couldn't put letters together the way most everyone else could. Shisei, who was closest, might be able to hear, but Maya wasn't particularly worried. She could break his knees if he chose to mock her or make fun of her.... Memories of the Kun'Kumo clan flooded her head, and she pulled her hand back towards her body and shoved them in her pockets again, her shoulders shaking ever so slightly - the girl was scared. She shuffled from foot to foot, and finally managed to spit out, "What are y'gonna do t'day..?"

Squiggly lines? Xyn had to think for a moment. Was his handwriting that bad? His face went blank until he remembered. He had given her a poem before and she couldn't read it. It was probably better that way. He didn't want to have to explain what the poem was about, even though he hardly knew the meaning of what he was writing.

"This..." Xyn returned to the page he was working on, taking the coal in his other hand.

"... just something, where I put my thoughts. I'm..." Despite not wanting to explain, he felt he owed her some type of explanation.

"... trying to understand 'memory'. I don't think... it will mean anything until it's... finished..." The boy hesitated with the last word. How would he know when it was finished? It was almost as if something deep in his mind were guiding his hand. Maybe... it was something he had already written years ago...

Fractured thoughts that long to join together

"I don't have any plans..." The thought never came to his mind to have something to do. As organized a person as he was, he usually had no destination or intent. Even coming to the grounds was simply a whim.

Karite had his eyes closed but knew Xyn acknowledge him. If he hadn't he would of said so. Karite kept his eyes closed in a sort of deep meditation. It was better this way. He was still having trouble calling forth this energy he needed. It was so easily lost. It was strong but dormant so to speak. It seemed he couldn't call it unless angered or provoked. Every time he tried otherwise it proved to be futile. Becoming frustrated Karite took the banned from his wrist and straightened his hair back into its usual ponytail. While grunge he still managed to get must of the hairs to stick into the proper place. Looking out to see Maya and Xyn Karite picked up on something he couldn't place a finger on. It was strange but Maya as ferocious as she could be seemed as decollete as a field mouse. It was weird but she was acting a lot like he did when Orika was around. Maya...had a crush? Karite shook the thought from his head with a smile. "Better leave the thinking to you on that one snake eyes. I don't see whats going on." Karite closed his eyes again this time a little harder trying his best to concentrate in his own mind. What could he use to bring out the energy he needed? Then Shisei's question poured into his mind like ice water. It began to swim its way through every crevice of his inner mind working its way into his thoughts an stopping them cold. "Are you an orphan?..." Karite thought. To tell the truth on this matter would mean all this running from his past would be all for not. "Quickly say something to throw him off." Karite spun around in his mind like a child left alone in the dark looking for the light. "A riddle get him with a riddle." "And do not expect me to hold my tongue either friend, for I speak the truth and nothing but it. As far as family goes to be orphaned must mean one had a mother and father to begin with. I was born from the dreams of and whims of death and time itself. So if you must determine I never had a family nor was I an orphan." Karite was slightly impressed with himself on the matter he thought quickly though his concentration was thrown again. "As far as Tanu-kun is concerned. She tried to kill me, and death doesn't take kindly to being stared at."

The child continued to watch Maya and this Xyn person converse and he was beginning to see something. One this Xyn person seemed to be missing piece of his tongue or vocal box. He never finished any sentences. Next was Maya’s demeanor. The ferocious lioness was starting to act like an embarrassed cub. His ears picked up that she asked him about some type of squiggly lines in the boy’s book. Did that mean mono eye was an artist or had atrocious hand writing? Surely Maya wasn’t illiterate. She was a genin after all. Shisei refused to believe such a ludicrous idea of her not being able to read. Yet what was this change over her? She was much more silent before, but because of this boy in charcoal colors, she was stuttering and talking. It was becoming such a perplexing question the Shisei stopped his stretch and got up to a vertical base. His eyes peered towards Karite for a second who was trying to draw his chakra out. “Why don’t you use that anger to pull your chakra out? Hmmm. I know. Think about me insulting your girlfriend.” that should be enough motivation. After all his peers worked better once they had an opponent to focus on. And who not better than the one they couldn’t touch? The snake child turned back to stare at the lioness and this one eyed raven. “Just what is going on? Why is this boy having this effect? If anything Maya should be speaking more with Karite. Why is this….!”.

Could it be? Shisei was beginning to see a trend in Shimagakure. Trend A: Almost all the females had some freakishly brutish strength. The jungle drunk was one. Orika was another. The Izumi girl was another. Maya is definitely one of intense strength too. Tanu would have been placed on Shisei’s list, but he still believes her to be a boy. Trend B: Most of them had some type of emotional, borderline sociopathic, issue or feelings. Orika being the best example with mood swings that changed with every minute in the hour. The jungle drunk was crazy. His so called ‘big sister’ was way too happy. Maya was silent and brooding. Ms. Yuki was now in such a depression that she’d never return. Izumi with her scantly clad clothing and much politeness most also hold something weird below the surface. Once again Tanu would have easily made this list, but the serpent needed more proof that she was of the feminine sex. Finally, trend C: This was starting to become a place of love connections. First the rude boy and the jungle drunk, then Orika and Karite, now these two. Who next? Sly smile and that boy infested with insects? Perhaps the stick and the wild boy everyone wants to believe is a girl. Shisei clasped a hand to his face. “I don’t believe this…” the boy muttered. His form then turned away and moved further from the group. “I’m training further away before I get infected with this love bug sickness.” his voice stated aloud. The last thing the snake needed now was to get those same butterflies over some female passing by. That would be a major setback to plans.

Karite listened to Shisei and just laughed. "You must have forgotten what I just said. Your words don't do much to me anymore. Its just who you are. I have accepted that fact now snake eyes. Its Maya who still pisses me off. Well she would if she wasn't freaking me out right now." As Shisei stood Karite scrambled to his feet. "We aint done talking yet big guy." The boy followed Shisei and found himself soon in a tree hanging upside down from a branch. "Whats this love bug your talking about? And whats this I hear about Xyn and Maya going through your head?" Karite was now upside down with his eyes closed forming the same hand seal from before. Now he looked like a bat hanging upside down. It was funny to say the least but a little odd for the boy to be doing. it was even harder o gain any sort of concentration from the position because of the blood rushing to his head but he figured it was a new spin on things and might jog some sort of memory in his mind because right now Maya could not be used as a source of inspiration because of the way she was acting which in his mind was a little pathetic for the girl because she was suppose to be the pride leader of the Tatagemi clan and she was acting like a shy school girl who had accidentally dropped her books in front of her crush. "Hey Shisei, I noticed something about your stance. Your putting to much strain on your shoulders. The muscles seem much more tense then the rest of your body. Try not to be so stiff and it might make things a little easier."

Let them fade and lose my heart,
Let them join and lose...

"My self...?" Xyn let the coal drop from his fingers before finishing the final part. This poem... is that what it meant?

"Lose my memory, and lose my heart. Gain my memory, and lose myself..." For only a second, Xyn forgot Maya was in front of him. He started to walk to his left while marking over the page. At first, it seemed he was walking away, but he quickly turned around. He was pacing. He made his final edits to the poem before standing in front of Maya again.

Ridiculous...

Xyn let the phrase repeat in his mind. Lose your heart... or lose your self... impossible. He closed the journal before giving it another thought, looking toward Maya with a lighter expression.

"Sorry, ignore my outburst..."

Still making a racket...

Xyn's head craned up and over his shoulder to look at Shisei. What was he muttering about an affect on Maya? Was she acting differently? Although, Maya's mood was different from when they had first met his first days in the village, but how would this person know that much? Even so, Xyn was growing more and more aggravated by Shisei's tone. It was no wonder if Karite was trying to kill him. Xyn didn't even know the boy and he wanted to rough him up. For a fraction of a second, Xyn smirked while turning around, giving Baki a soft pat on the head before pulling away.

"Please excuse me, I may have... found something interesting. Come with me... if you want." Xyn invited her mainly because he didn't want to stop talking to her. He made his way to Shisei, observing what he was doing for the first time. Some sort of physical exercise... so he was that type. Still several steps away, Xyn stopped far enough so that he could talk in his usual voice and still be heard.

"... you talk a lot."

This new turn of relationships disturbed the youth. He preferred to keep Maya on his side, or at least in better standings than the others. Little snake could tell she was strong and could become an advantage for him in the future. Yet with the way how things were going… “That won’t be possible. I didn’t expect her to have any type of bond with anyone from the academy. I won’t be able to have any clout around the grounds if Maya’s affections lie with him. It’ll be hard to influence her decisions with this tongueless fool around. Worst of all I can’t touch him either since that’ll just put me in worse standings with the woman. Grr… things were starting to go my way too. I’ll have to figure out a way to erase this person.” Shisei thought as he turned his head over his shoulder at the new student. His head quickly turned back and the boy continued to walk away.

With different ideas presenting themselves in the boys mind as to some type of accident or disappearance of Xyn, he had forgotten what Karite was saying. The child would have forgotten if grass hair youth did not follow. His frame hung upside down in a nearby tree. The boy had talked in riddles again about the subject of family. Normally Shisei would have pursued this issue, just to collect the knowledge, but the single pupil boy was more important at the moment. That and training. Without much thought the serpent child made a response to that answer. “Born of dreams of death and time? Then death and time must be your family. But why would a reaper want a family?” Shisei continued his interrogation. He didn’t even realize that he was going along with such an absurd idea. Someone being born of death and time. Feh. Still his tongue was held and only continued to give an answer for the other question. With a sigh the snake decided to explain his theory about the lioness and the crow. “Love bug. An old fable or fairytale from my previous village. It stated that if the insect bit a person, they'd quickly fall in love. The same close relations you and Orika have developed so quickly, Maya and the single eye probably also have. This makes things more difficult…” the boy ended his sentence there before letting anymore of his thoughts out of his head. He decided to try the advice that Karite had given. Before the loner could plant his body back on the ground, the new person of the minute approached the boy, leaving a few feet between them. Shisei turned with his expressionless face just staring at the boy. He said he talked too much. A provoker too. Perhaps this person was trying to begin something, knowing that Maya was on his side. “What a nusicance…”. His eyes remained staring at the boy’s one dark orb. “Karite, you have the most annoying friends. Except this one can’t seem to make complete sentences or takes long to make them. Do you have a speech impediment or are you just dense?”

Maya knew that Shisei's comment about speech impediments had been directed at the only person who'd stuck around - and it irked her. Xyn was the closest thing she had to a real friend, and she didn't care how hard this snake had it. She wasn't going to tolerate him bad-mouthing him. With a hard, golden glint in her eyes, she turned and snarled at Shisei, stalking towards him and grabbing him by the collar roughly. The fury in her eyes was tangible, and she dropped him on the ground. "You do talk too much, snake. And you disrespect everyone around you, like you're better or something. Shut up. Listen, for once." She dropped him and turned to Karite, fire still in her eyes. "Stop talking in riddles. I'm not smart enough to figure them out - Shisei might be, but this is my home, and if you're gonna live here, don't confuse me," Maya snapped, clearly confused about his whole orphan-or-not riddle. And then, Orika...

Maya shook her head and muttered to the girl, "I've got no idea how you're gonna handle them, but...good luck." Orika was her favorite today, though depending on the events of the day...that might change. She walked past Xyn, towards her three soaking hides and some others, grabbing her work and throwing it over her shoulder. She shook her head as she looked again at the two boys, giving Orika a look that translated into pity for having to be stuck with them, and walked past Xyn, motioning with her head for him to take the lead and show her where they would be going.

"Maybe you can teach me what some of those are s'posed to say," she said, the obvious being stated now: Maya might have been the strongest genin on the island physically, but she was quite possibly the village idiot.
