Envy listened as Adine continued talking to Armony. He had finished his little "hissy fit" and was now recovering for all of the twitching that occured. Oooo..... Adine, you are sooooo good at this. Getting even a young girl to trust you. He grinned a little as he watched the two, and then he turned away to look out for people he may not want intruding. He tapped his foot repeatedly in a puddle as he looked around. He felt the need to return to his perch high above the others, so he jumped up, leaving only a splash in the puddle and a slightly confused Adine and Armony. He sat down and turned his back to teh others. Enough humans. I'm tired of dealing with them for the day. He closed his eyes and thought of the plans he was to complete. Then a sudden thought snapped in him. I wonder where the Fullmetal Shorty is..... it has been a couple of years since I entered The Gate, I wonder what he is up to? He smirked and thought nothing of it. He isn't bothering me now, whyshould i care? Then he turned back around to face Aine and Armory. "Yo! Are you two done with your family reunion, or am I going to have to break it up for you?" He said with a smirk.

Armony Eiselstein "Adine-san, forgive me...!" she said softly, bowing forward. "I..." she stared at the ground. "I can't seem to remember anything about myself... but I'll try my best, I promise!" Adine laughed heartily, and it wasn't all for show. This was too rich. The girl was completely at a loss. No memories...no recollections of anything, so it seemed! Truth was, Adine had absolutely no relation to the child...Adine had no living relatives left...but if she could dupe Eiselstein's surrogate daughter and have something else to work against Mustang and the Elric senior, all the better.
She grinned wickedly to herself. Twist the knife so the wound won't heal... Won't those two be surprised to learn of my...'relations' to Eiselstein...?
She cast a look at Armony. "Darling, why so formal?" she gasped. "Have you really forgotten your beloved Aunt? Why, you never called me with a title before... Just plain Adine is still fine, sweetheart." She took off her gray jacket, revealing a collared white shirt that was probably a little too quick to really suit office propriety, and draped the outer garment around Armony's shoulders. "I still can't believe you're here! What on earth are you doing in Central?"Armony Eiselstein "Nee, Adine-san..." she looked quickly at Envy. "...how... how do you know this one? He's that 'feared' Homunculus, Envy, you know..." Her eyes flattened. "...although, anymore... I fail to see why he's so scary..." She turned her naive gaze back to the woman again, her face placid. Adine didn't break her facade.
"Oh, come now, all that pish-posh about Envy being a feared Homunculus is for show," she said, and could practically feel Envy seething behind her. She sniggered silently.
Forgive me, Envy, she thought, but trust me, you'll thank me for this once we have Eiselstein under my spell...Envy-san "Yo! Are you two done with your family reunion, or am I going to have to break it up for you?" "Keep your spandex on, Twiggy," she growled at him. "This is a fantastic event..."--her green eyes flashed wickedly--"trust me..." She gave him a knowing smile. "Armony-chan's return could prove to be quite useful to our cause, Envy..."
Leaving the homunculus to digest that said, she met Armony's eyes again.
"He's working with me in HQ," she explained. "I...suppose you won't remember, seeing as how you appear to have amnesia..." She took the girl by the shoulders and pulled her close to her. "Listen to me, Armony-chan," she went on seriously, "since you don't seem to have any memories, let me fill you in on a couple of things before we go inside."
Armony looked reverently up at Adine, and the older woman almost felt guilty for pumping such deceptive thoughts into the child's head.
Ah...but no big deal. Adine had no conscience she was overly aware of. She was sure she'd get over it.
She looked into Armony's bright red eyes.
"I know this will probably all seem a bit overwhelming right now," she told her, licking her lips at her own devious plans, "but I need you to pay attention. Now that you've returned, HQ will be all up in arms. I imagine you have no idea just how shocking it will be for everyone to see you again, but try and think of how you would feel if you suddenly saw someone again whom you thought was dead for years..."
Armony nodded.
Adine forbade herself to smirk, and gently tugged on Armony's shoulders to guide her toward the darkened building, nodding once to Envy in gesture to follow.
Take the form of the Sergeant you've posed as before, she mouthed silently at him, and just follow my lead... Then she turned her attention back to her newly discovered 'niece'.
"Now listen, Armony, sweetheart," Adine went on, her voice low and sober, "I know this is all kind of overwhelming, but I need your help. Now that you're here, since I am your only relative left alive,"--Armony looked shocked and a trifle crushed by this sudden news--"you will be in my custody. I'll take care of you, honey, but I need you to listen to me very carefully. You are a very special child. Your father was a great alchemist and an amazing scientist. Therefore, all of the people in the military and the Parliament will want to get their grubby paws on you. THey'll want to try and tap your memories to find out information about your late father, and I won't let that happen. But I need you to trust me. I need you to do exactly as I tell you... Can you do that for me, honey?"
Armony nodded eagerly, and Adine couldn't believe how this youngster had just melted to putty in the hands of a false prohpet.
"Okay, good," she oozed. "Here's what we're going to do. You're going to come inside with Envy and I... But don't call him Envy. Do not ever use that name inside military property, it will make all the civilian employees uneasy, and we can't have that. Some of the officers don't even know the homunculus is working with us now...his shapeshifting abilities are amazingly useful... So just make sure you call him 'Sergeant' and never Envy, okay? If someone found out about him who wasn't supposed to know, it could lead to disaster, do you understand?"
((Armony, I'll wait for you to respond to some of this before I go on, I'm writing a novel again... sweatdrop ))

Envy stood up and jumped down towards them swiftly. Then he transformed to the all too familiar Sergeant he had posed as before. He walked past the two and glanced at the shocked look on Armony's face. He laughed a little at the sight of this and walked on, silently listening to everything Adine said.

"I was hoping to find someone who knew me... or, moreover... someone to teach me alchemy." She stuffed her hands into her pockets, grinning. "But now that you're here, I won't have to worry about it."Adine McLearynn Adine didn't break her facade.
"Oh, come now, all that pish-posh about Envy being a feared Homunculus is for show," she said, and could practically feel Envy seething behind her. She sniggered silently. Armony giggled. Something about the peeved ShapeShifter never ceased to amuse her...Adine McLearynn "Okay, good," she oozed. "Here's what we're going to do. You're going to come inside with Envy and I... Armony nodded crisply, allowing her brain to become somewhat sponge-like to absorb all of this.
"So Envy-san is Sergeant. Got it." She smiled, pleased with herself. She glanced over her shoulder at Envy, and mock-saluted him. "Good day, Sergeant." She beamed, and turned her attention back to Adine. "Anything else I should know, Adine-sa... er, Adine?"
Armony was completely and totally wrapped around Adine's little finger. And she wasn't even aware of it. She hunched her shoulders and pulled the fabric of Adine's jacket tighter around her shoulders. She wasn't even noticing the temperature anymore... she was too happy for that. Armony Eiselstein "I was hoping to find someone who knew me... or, moreover... someone to teach me alchemy." She stuffed her hands into her pockets, grinning. "But now that you're here, I won't have to worry about it." Adine paused in mid-stride.
Alchemy...? Before her 'death', it had been recorded that Armony had apparently been forbidden to learn alchemy. Adine had assumed it was because of the Catalyst that had been responsible for her creation. But...now that Armony was back, perhaps the effects of the Catalyst were no longer valid?
She twitched her mouth. "Armony-chan, I think the alchemy lessons should wait for the time being," she said honestly. "I...do know some alchemy, but I bequeath you not tell anyone this. I keep my art a secret because if my superiors were to learn what I was capable of, they would make me into a soldier, and that is something I refuse to do." She gave the girl a serious look. "Can you keep that secret, honey? I promise to teach you some tricks...but you cannot tell anyone what you know or where you learned it, okay?"Armony Eiselstein Armony nodded crisply, allowing her brain to become somewhat sponge-like to absorb all of this.
"So Envy-san is Sergeant. Got it." She smiled, pleased with herself. She glanced over her shoulder at Envy, and mock-saluted him. "Good day, Sergeant." She beamed, and turned her attention back to Adine. "Anything else I should know, Adine-sa... er, Adine?" Adine sighed heavily and gave Armony a grave look.
"Armony, there is...one other thing..." she said, and Armony looked apprehensive. "There are some people in HQ who...know you." She held up one hand when Armony looked elated at this news. "No, sweetheart, it's not...necessarily a good thing... The people who knew you...knew you before you 'died' all those years ago...they are soldiers. I am confident that they will attempt to sway you from my custody."
Armony looked appalled.
Adine shook her head.
"No matter what they tell you, you must not listen, my dear," she said sternly. "The brigadier general, his first lieutenant, and the Fullmetal Alchemist are all inside that building. They will claim to know you, to understand you, they may even go as far as to tell you they know you better than I..."--Adine looked wounded--"but we are family, angel...and no bonds can run stronger than that. Your father wouldn't have left me as your caretaker if he hadn't faith in me..."
She almost winced at the bald-faced lies she was feeding the child...
...Almost.
"Whatever they tell you," she said, opening the front lobby doors and ushering the younger redhead inside, "you must keep the faith in your family." And now, for the clincher. "We are all the other has now, Armony," she said, and Armony gasped at the dark words, "so please don't ever doubt me. I'll do whatever it takes to help you regain your memories..."
Adine was certain she heard Envy snicker sourly at the things she had said. She could almost feel the horns grow from her forehead at the devilish falsities she was spewing forth... But, hey, desperate times called for desperate measures. If this was another sore point for Fullmetal and Flame...so be it. She would have her vengeance...by whatever means necessary...
...whatever means necessary...

"Not from you, of course not. What are you talking about?" She grinned, and clasped her hands in front of herself, listening intently to what Adine had to say.Adine McLearynn "No matter what they tell you, you must not listen, my dear," she said sternly. "The brigadier general, his first lieutenant, and the Fullmetal Alchemist are all inside that building. She would have loved to converse with people who knew her... but these people were bad! Adine was her family, she wasn't to listen to anyone but her. She fisted one hand, and shot a fierce look to Adine.
"Don't worry, Adine. ...whatever means necessary... Armony allowed herself to be lead into the HQ by her newly-aquired surrogate aunt. She kept a faint smile on her face, unable to remove it. She glanced occasionally back at Envy, which usually caused her grin to grow for a split second, until his eyes travelled her way, which would cause her to force her smile down. She didn't want him to know that she was more amused by him now than she was afraid... Lord knows, one should never injure the pride of a Homunculus.
She giggled mentally. This had to be the best day of her life...
...but at the same time, it was the worst, and she hadn't a clue.

The last thing Adine needed was Mustang and Fullmetal suspecting Adine for the foul player she was. Cruel words from an old friend would do just that.
"Just...well, you don't even have to pretend, really," she went on, lowering her voice as they entered the lobby. "You have lost your memories... No matter what they try to tell you, just don't listen. I'll help you remember, angel, but I'll need you to trust me completely..." She cupped Armony's face in her palms. "Be polite to them...show the jackals the respect they have earned by their titles..."--here eyes flashed--"but remember where your loyalties lie, my dear... Your family is here, with me... I'll take care of you now that you have returned... Those military mongrels will do nothing but trouble you and pick your brain for tidbits of information about your father's research..."
No matter what, she had to make sure Armony stayed quiet.
"So remember...you know nothing," she reiterated. "Be my good little angel and I'll teach you everything you need to know about alchemy, and who you are..."

Armony bowed her head a little. it was true that she'd lost her memories... and it was true that she wouldn't have to act like she didn't know any of the military personnel that might know her. But that didn't change the fact that it was upsetting. She wanted to know who she was... she wanted to know who she had been...!Adine McLearynn No matter what, she had to make sure Armony stayed quiet.

She didn't know who she was, she didn't recognize the people who knew her, and there was nothing she could do about it.
But Adine was here now. Adine would teach her what she wanted to know. Adine would help her... Adine would make everything the way it was supposed to be.

Armony Eiselstein Her eyes stayed trained on the floor, and she nodded somewhat sullenly. It hadn't really occurred to her until now how hopeless she was. She didn't know who she was, she didn't recognize the people who knew her, and there was nothing she could do about it. Adine motioned for Armony to take a seat on the long bench in the lobby, then glanced at the guard.
"Guard, bring me a blanket for the child," she requested crisply. "Has Mustang-junshou been here yet?"
He shook his head.
"No, Ma'am," he replied, and turned to head into the darkened hall. "I believe he must be caught up in some paperwork in his office."
Adine's eyes narrowed as the guard went to retrieve a blanket from one of the supply rooms. Paperwork, huh? She tapped her fingertips together.
Then she turned back to Armony.
"Don't worry, angel," she said, sitting down beside her, "I promise things won't be as scary as they seem right now. The brigadier general is a personable man, for the most part. I...don't know that I can say the same for his lieutenant, however... But the Fullmetal One is rigth around your age, so even if you don't remember him, I'm sure you two can become friends again."
She smiled darkly.
"Just keep in mind what I've told you," she whispered as the guard returned with a blanket. She draped the blanket over Armony's termbling shoulders and patted the girl on the head. "He's a jackal, just like the rest of them... It's sad, but true. He's only after the research locked away in your head, so don't completely trust him, regardless how kind he seems..."
She folded her hands in her lap and spared a glance to Envy, who was lurking in the shadows. She jerked her head to one side, motioning for him to get out of the lobby before Edward, Mustang, and Hawkeye came into the room. The chances of his being discovered were too great among the three of them. As the homunculus backed away into the black hollows of the candlelit room, Adine sat back and surveyed the scene.
The game was being set up nicely... The plans, the map, the girl, and the changeling...Mustang, Hawkeye, Havoc, and Fullmetal... All the pieces were falling into place, bit by unexpected bit. Adine placed one slender hand upon her chin and smiled secretly to herself.
And once all of those pieces were set in place...?
Adine crossed her long legs at the knee.

I...don't know that I can say the same for his lieutenant, however... But the Fullmetal One is rigth around your age, so even if you don't remember him, I'm sure you two can become friends again." Armony's eyes stayed on the ground. She couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had been sticking to her like stickytape since she first encountered Envy.
Something was wrong here, but she couldn't figure it out. She figured it must have had something to do with the military. She hunched where she sat, folding her hands in her lap and fidgeting slightly.
And why did Adine keep referring to her as "angel"? ...A chosen term of endearment, she imagined. It unnerved her slightly.
She raised her scarlet eyes to Adine, a somewhat pleading smile on her face.
"...Adine... you'll tell me who I am, once we're through here... right?" She was suddenly tired. Maybe it was the rain, or the train ride. Long train rides always did make her kind of tired...
Her voice was small, soft. She'd fallen back into her timid, everyone-is-a-stranger-to-me demeanor. She twisted her hands together again in her lap, somewhat nervously.
She wasn't sure she wanted to meet someone that knew her... if they only intended to cause trouble. This "FullMetal" boy, as Adine kept calling him... she didn't want to see him. She was tempted to ask Adine if she could wait outside. Adine McLearynn "Just keep in mind what I've told you," she whispered as the guard returned with a blanket. She draped the blanket over Armony's termbling shoulders and patted the girl on the head. "He's a jackal, just like the rest of them... It's sad, but true. Armony Eiselstein "...Adine... you'll tell me who I am, once we're through here... right?" She was suddenly tired. Maybe it was the rain, or the train ride. Long train rides always did make her kind of tired... Adine was momentarily snapped from her pre-triumh reverie when Armony's timid voice broke into her thoughts.
"Hmm? Oh! Of course, dear," she said quickly. "I have some files on your father in my office I can even show you if you like." She patted the girl on the head again. "Don't worry, angel, everything will be just fine..."
She glanced at the guard, then at the clock on the wall.
Dammit...where the hell was Mustang? She wanted to get out of this godforsaken building already. If Armony wanted to learn alchemy...of course, Adine would teach her... Having the child armed would make her that much more of a useful pawn later. But surely she couldn't be taught here. Not when no one knew Adine was an alchemist in the first place.
She tapped her foot.
Damn officials, anyway... she grumbled silently. Always taking their time like they're so bloody important...
She turned to Armony briefly.
"Are you cold, angel?" she asked, thinking to herself that she couldn't wait to get home and take a bath... All of the sweetness she was laying on was starting to make her feel...dirty. She thought for a moment. "I think there might still be some coffee in the break room, it should still be warm. I'll go make you a cup, okay?"
She rose and looked at the guard.
"Keep an eye on things here, Guard," she instructed, "and if the brigadier general shows up, have him wait, I will be back in just a moment..." SHe smiled. "And I promise what I have to show him will be worth his while..."
The guard looked like he suspected that had somehow been an inapproppriate comment, but nodded nonetheless.
Her eyes grew cold.
"And don't you allow anyone to touch my niece, here, do you understand?" she demanded icily. "I don't care if he is a senior officer, no one is to lay a finger on that girl until I return, are we clear?"
"Crystal, Ma'am," he replied fearfully, and Adine turned on her heel to clack down the hall toward the break room for a cup of coffee.
The guard sighed as she left and sat down again, then glanced at Armony.
"So...you're Miss McLearynn's niece?" he asked lightly, and chuckled. "I can see the resemblance... Not many people around here with hair that color..."Armony Eiselstein ((Nice touch, with the Checkmate... that was cool. "So...you're Miss McLearynn's niece?" he asked lightly, and chuckled. "I can see the resemblance... Not many people around here with hair that color..." Armony's crimson eyes raised to the guard, and she nodded after a moment's hesitation.
Yes, she was Adine's niece. She smiled unsurely.
"...I guess I am. I don't remember much about myself... But Adine is going to fix that." Her smile strengthened. "And I will remember." She glanced back at her hands, still clasped in her lap. "I will help Adine in any way I can... because she's helping me."
And with that, she fell silent, planning to remain that way until Adine returned.

Riza Hawkeye Chuui Riza saluted crisply and nodded her head.
"Of course we'll be accompanying you," she spoke for Havoc, who jumped, but didn't make any objection. She caught Roy's eye a moment and then lowered her gaze in silent apology for her previous actions.
Gray orbs met chocolate ones for an instant, then they both looked back their seperate ways. He felt bad for having retorted in the least bit to Riza. He figured that he really didn't have a leg to stand on. He shouldn't look at girls like that. But.. it was just... if he thought he could get away with it, he'd lay eyes only on Riza.
He figured if he tried this, he'd get smacked, or at least get a dog sicked on him. Frowning a bit, he let a breath go slowly as he watched the floor while they headed down the hallway. He ocassionally glanced up at Riza, each time he caught her looking at him. Each time he met her eyes, he found himself wondering what she was thinking.Riza Hawkeye Chuui "Ah...Sir...I..." she stammered, and saw him grin at her lack of articulation. She bit her tongue into submission. "Sir, please forgive what I said earlier," she implored, and fell into step beside him as they trailed behind Havoc and Ed. "I wasn't thinking clearly. Something about Adine makes me uneasy and I lose my concentration. I just worry that she has the same effect on you and...well..." --she cast him a sidelong glance-- "you have enough difficulty focusing as it is..." she quipped in conclusion, and a wry grin crept across her face.
Looking at her agian, he noticed a small smile tint her lips for an instant, however it disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. He gently reached out and touched her arm, feeling her jump a bit in the dark, he spoke softly, his voice at a low enough volume that only she could hear him. "Hawkeye-chuui, you weren't out of line at all. I apologize for what I did, it was out of line for me. Please forgive me."
He scoffed a bit when it was mentioned that he had enough of a hard time concentrating. It was true, but he would be damned sooner than he would admit it. Who could concentrate on paperwork? It was so boring. He'd rather clean the windows.Riza Hawkeye Chuui "I just have a really bad feeling about this whole thing," she added for good measure. "The storm, the tresspassers... Even Edward-kun's return..." Roy looked at her oddly, and she shook her head as if trying to clear it. "As happy as I am to see him back," she whispered, mostly so Ed wouldn't hear her words, "I can't help but wonder if it isn't some sort of sign of things to come..." She blinked at Roy as he leaned in close to hear her. "I wonder...if perhaps he was returned to us...because...we may need his help during the events that seem imminent to come..." Nodding in agreement, he strode toward the main lobby. The sound of their footsteps echoing in hollowly in unison against the walls. He noted that headquarters looked like some deep, dark, and dank prison in the dim candlelight. Shivering involuntarily he took quicker steps.
There indeed was something rather sinister going on. He had felt this in his gut for the past day and a half now, it just seemed to finally be taking shape now. Frowning a bit, he looked to the group that was following.
"Mark my words. Be careful. There's something rather sinister brewing in this building as well as outside." Glancing to Edward, he narrowed his eyes a bit. "With how on top of things you normally are, I'm sure you've noticed something rather distrubing in the composition as of late. Something is not right."
With that, he glanced back to the candleflame and then looked up, his gray eyes almost orange with reflections. He squinted as he looked around the main lobby. It was very dark in here, apparently this area didn't get as much outside light as others, or it had gone completely dark outside.
Glancing toward a window, the later of the two answers made more sense. The clouds outside were now completely black, only the occasional lightning made for any light outside.
The sound of movement from the far side of the lobby made a shiver go down his spine. He took an instinctive step infront of Riza. He would protect her with his life.

As she headed down the hallway, a thousand thoughts bombarded Adine's mind. This child posed so much potential it was almost...well...wicked. The daughter of a scientist...believed to be dead for years now... Not to mention a personal past with Fullmetal. It was almost too good to be true.
Adine feared it might end up being just so if she wasn't careful...
She ducked into the breakroom, her trusty penlight guiding her through the darkened hallway, and spied the cofeepot on the counter. Placing her hand on it, she was pleased to see it was indeed still lukewarm, and she poured some into a mug, then upended two packets of sugar into it.
Then she paused, and added another. Kids liked sugar, right?
Mug-in-hand, she headed back into the hallway and back toward the lobby. The next move would be Mustang's, she mused to herself. She was eager to see everyone's reaction to little Armony's miraculous reappearance. It was certain to be a most...pleasing display of tragic and shocked emotions.
Adine could barely wait. Nothing gave her more pleasure than the thought of catching Flame and Fullmetal so off-guard. Licking her lips at the promise of such a delicious sight, Adine picked up her pace and trotted back toward the lobby to deliver the cup of coffee to her impromptu next-of-kin.
Outside, a new, distant rumbling of thunder echoed from the heavens, and the pattering of rain was audible again as the cosmos poured down a second helping of their icy depths over Central City. Adine smiled to herself, tapping her fingertips on the mug of coffe.
The calm before the storm, she mused, was about to get...messy.
