Neko: I haven't. All my knowledge from the books comes from reading the cover and Author's notes in the back. I haven't had time to read any books about the drow or drow society. The closest to that I get is the (I suppose) stylized webcomic DrowTales --- which I highly recommend.
There are several other Gaian-drow who use the forums there, though I haven't spoken to any.

I've been a huge fan of DrowTales comic since shortly after it's inception. It's a totally different take on the drow than your typical D&D version (due to copyright issues with WotC no doubt), yet is absolutely brilliantly conceived and still manages to capture the essence of what is most intrigueing about the race.

Aria na`Hael Draevir I had never read the Icewind Dale trilogy, mostly because it wasn't primarily about drow. Is it good? I tried to read it, but just couldn't get into it. To me, it wasn't nearly as good as the Dark Elf trilogy. I read all the saga books in chronological order of events and I can tell you the gap between the Dark Elf Trilogy and Icewind Dale Trilogy is pretty evident nnU Salvatore wrote Icewind Dale first, so he didn't have some details on Drizzt past clear, so he ends up saying he's older than he truly is, and things like that... also, the writing style changes, it gets better over time, and that means that if you are reading the books chronologicaly like I did what you get is an obvious quality gap XD and thirdly, when Salvatore started Icewind Dale he wanted Wulfgar to be the main character, but in the end Drizzt got most of the readers attention and as a result the lead of the story in the last books XXD it's a good trilogy, but you have to be prepared for what I said. I lend the books to a friend of mine and she read it in the same order. She couldn't go past the first book of the Icewind Dale trilogy because the sudden change annoyed her too much nnU

I read the Dark Elf trilogy first and then tried to read Icewind Dale. I couldn't get past the first book either. The change that bothered me the most was just the quality of the writing. It just...wasn't as good as the Dark Elf trilogy. I couldn't get into the story or really care about any of the character. Even Drizzt.

If I feel the need to force myself through a book I usually just skim through it to pick up the mot important parts of info/story.
Maybe give that a try?

XD don't worry, it's normal, I found myself reading diagonally most of the time in the first book
I must say, quality goes up bit by bit starting in book 2, but probably only because Entreri is there to add some sauce
but you may feel it better to simply read how story goes on wikipedia or something and just continue to the next books
on a related note, the books I have are the spanish "pocket" edition (the "" are there because there is no pocket big enough to hold such books rolleyes unless you are a hill giant, that is) and the art on the covers is just plain aaaaaaaawful gonk thankfully they changed the artist and the new editions get nice and accurate art (the previous one just didn't know that elves grow old slower than humans and took in a human-way the whole "Drizzt is about 100 years old" <- Salvatores mistake, in those books he can't be older than 50 or 60, but anyways...)

Yeah. THe old covers are outright hideous. I'm glad I held off on buying alot of the earlier ones until the new covers came out.

Cover art for the Elaine Cunningham books is not so good either.

I won one of ther anual comic contests once (the first one, actually, I shared first place with another author)... Kern offered me a chance to have my own series there, but it was a difficult year and I ended up offline for quite a bit... and after that I haven't contacted him again -_- I feel very guilty about it XP

A little fun fact: I saw a Drow in those comics called Faen. It's spelled precisely like one of the most used swear words in Norway. Only that the NAME Faen is pronounced Fa-een and the swear word is pronounced Fa-enn(Or Fan with a long A if you're from the northern parts like me). If we say "Faen ta deg/Fan ta dæ", it's the same as "******** you!". Amusing, isn't it?
