Meri, a long time ago I asked you for help finding out different ways to spell the name "Rei" in kanji and the different meanings the spellings would have, but I forgot to check if you ever responded to it. Got the time to help me out??

Alex: Try the medium hot. ^^ If you like it but want something really sweet, then try adding apples (Fuji!) to the mild along with beef. Peel and core the apples and then cut them into chunks and add them near the end. Only cook 'em long enough to heat them. You want the apples to be crispy, not smushy like pie apples.
Miri: There are a bunch of kanji that can be read as "rei" but you wouldn't use them as names. For instance, "ghost," "etiquette/manners," and "example."
There are some that aren't used as names but could be if you're naming a character instead of a real person. "Freezing/cold" and "zero/nothing." Also, if you take half of the "freezing/cold" kanji away you get another kanji that's read as "rei" but means...er....something like "order" or "command?" Not sure. I never use it.

Rei's one of my favorite names, So I was planning on naming my first daughter Rei. I figure since it's a Japanese name I might as well know how to spell it properly in the language of its orgin.
Is Rei a common name in Japan, or just a common anime character name? I know it's usually given to preistesses and spooky-type anime characters.
I guess if my dream of becomming a Volcanologist and living in Hilo, Hawaii comes true, my kid will spelling her name for her Japanese friends in katakana.

Perhaps it's becuase it looks like "sake" to me, I dunno XD lol

Judging popular Japanese names by referencing anime and manga is like judging popular American names by referencing fantasy novels. Don't do it. XD
I've never heard of a real person named Rei. I know of a couple women named Reiko but I've never met them personally so I don't know how it's written. It's entirely possible that they use hiragana and so have no meaning at all. ^^;
Katakana is used for sound effects and foreign words for the most part, so you'd never use it for a Japanese name. ^^

Yeah, figured I can cheat by making Rei a non-japanese name if it's written in katakana, so it wouldn't have a meaning. I guess Hiragana works just as well though.
Damn anime making me like a name that no one is actually named!
