I think you should go with that example from HoH, Vin. Or next year make it very clear to competitors that entering a strictly unarmed character is a potential handicap. For that matter, it couldn't hurt to make the "power level" clearer.

On a relevant note, how many of you lot would be interested in a tournament that focuses on melee weapons with marginal powers? I've always wanted to either enter something like it or run it myself. I guess I would put it somewhere between HoH and GTB in "power level" because, as noted above, it'd be made clear that anyone who cannot face an opponent wielding a melee weapon would be at a self-imposed handicap. But you would not be expected to face loads of magic, powerful ranged weapons, or high-level superhumans/metahumans.

Kind of like a Soul Calibur of the tourney scene--not at the SC power level mind you because that'd be ridic.

Also considering an OOC-centric reward system that focuses on the best Roleplayer, character, and best fight, whereas the IC reward can still go to the best fighter and overall victor.

Are we expected to go up against that in the HOH or GTB?

Fireside says hi.

Little known fact, his middle name is actually 'Loads of Magic'. Srsly.

Nooooope, didn't say that. Just pointing out that the focus would be on the melee weapons and fighting styles with minimal powers.

Damn, would've totally entered Siegfried.

That aside, I would be interested. I have just the character for it, too... just need to spice him up a tad for a tournament setting.

Considering if I remember right only 1, maybe 2 people entered without any powers/super human abilities/seals/whatever, I would say for GTB at least entering a normal human with no powers is going to be a bad time.

And I think both of them did not continue.

Yeah, exactly. I mean, I'd be down for an actual discussion about it for those who are actually interested.

I'd like to make it so a human skilled with a weapon could win. I think ideally for HoH that's supposed to be the case, but you're right, I really don't think it's ever been that way for GTB.

On the other hand, I would want to make it clear from the outset that if you are a human with no real powers and no weapon, you're probably going to have a bad time of your own volition. I think you could do OK in HoH as a pure martial artist, hence why I'd place it somewhere between the two.

I personally like a little flash here and there because absolutely no powers/special tricks could get very dry and technical.

Thanks. Just gauging interest at this point, and regardless I'm going to wait for the GTB to finish. I am also going to have a relatively free Summer so that would be the best time.

The primary human skill is tool use. What makes human beings able to face and overcome many challenges, as well as survive, is tools. Invention.

Humans can scale against powers and s**t, but then they need to scale with tech. Not necessarily bullshit anti-magical fields, but, something.

True, and you can have tech roughly equivalent to magic with a bit of hand-waving to make it balanced. But the main focus of this tournament would be the inter-disciplinary clash of melee weapon styles, with any magic or tech being secondary, minimal. So you could have that fight of the shortsword vs. the rapier, without one of the guys at some point busting out an explosive fireball or huge concussive blast from a palm cannon or some such.

Or if they could, they'd have to be on relatively high cooldowns. So something you can try to use tactically to gain an edge so it's not just a very dry exchange of slash-parry-stab-deflect-rinse-repeat.

I get your point, but I just wouldn't want the magic/tech to be the character's primary focus in achieving victory, so better to keep it scaled relatively low. At the same time I wouldn't put the handicaps on the fighters that they would feel penalized if they fought someone who used hand-to-hand only, whereas I think that's more along the lines for HoH. I suppose this would be more voluntary dueling tournament and clash of weapons, whereas HoH feels more like a combat sport which tolerates a greater variety of fighting styles.

That's fair. I'd be more worried about the people whose characters are like... Gorrons and s**t. Rock people. Even if they didn't load on the defensive powers having a rocky exterior would be a pretty good advantage against punching or sword-wielding guys with no other abilities.

I don't dislike the idea at all really. I just don't know if its really relevant to the local community. The only two characters like that I can think of off the top of my head are Clash and Fox.

It's funny, because I suggested this exact thing, and Vin's response was somewhere along the lines of "People don't follow it anyways so no."

Although it's more likely that people don't "follow" the vague outline because it's vague so they're just shooting for what they think sounds about right since they have no real idea what it means, especially since the actual acceptable power level has changed every year with zero change to the description.
