ANYWAY....

I have a concert today. just my luck, my clarinet decides it isn't going to work on me. And don't say it is just nerves, because it has been doing this since saturday.
It is dong the exact same thing as it does when I take too long to clean it, aka not playing when i blow into it. I mean, I'm pushing as hard as physically possible and still nothing comes ou, except a squeak if I am lucky. i tried cleaning it out. Still didn't work. Messed around with the reed, ligature and my embouchure, still wouldn't work. Tried a new reed, a little better, but still didn't wok(at least now I can get squeaks.) None of the screws are loose, nothing is otu of place, nothing looks wrong. I mean, if it were only doing this for a day or two, I would just think I was having on off day. but it has been almost a week. Anyone know what could be wrong with it or have any other things I can try in order to fix it? I've never had it do something like this before.

oh, and I have tried playing on another persons clarinet while theyplayed on mine(with our own mouthpieces of course) and they had the same problem, while i did fine on their instrument, so it isn't just me.

sounds like improper instrument care to me. maybe you should have got it fixed a long time ago smile . you know..like when the problem first happened.

Well, i thought I might have been having an off day or something, and then when it continued, I tried cleaning it out, because liek I said it tends to stop playing when I neglect it(accidentally)

And besides that, I couldn't (and still can't) afford to get ti fixed.

I've had the same problem, may it's the fct that you are trying too hard, my band director told my that i should get a new reed, soak it in woarm water for 5 min to break it in, then relax when i plat it next, don't stress it only makes things worse. i tried that and it worked for me... hope you try this!

Well,t he concert went okay, except I have this tendancy to put my reed on weird during concerts, and I did, which ended up me trying to fix it secretly through half of the song, which didn't go too well on my part. Finally, i got it on right, and just in time for the clarinet feature part of the song(aka silent night, and one of my fav parts in the whole song.) Unfortunately, the only other third clarinet stopped playing, so i was on my own trying to play as strongly as I could, but with three people playing higher notes on topof me, it was still hard to notice the third parts. then, when we stood p to bow, the other third clarinet tried to scoot back a bit(she claimed it was because nobody could see me, but I think that was just an excuseXD) And what happened? Her chair clattered to the floor(stupid metal fold up chairs>.>) I was trying not to burst out laughing. BD only made it worse by telling her to leave it through the corner of his mouth when she tried to pick it up.

I am a clarinet as well. I attend Salem High School & I am in marching band & symphonic. I could brag about the Salem band program 4ever. Not always but at this moment where there are others who enjoy the clarinet i feel pretty good 2b a clarinet player. =)

right now i am in symphonic band 1, that is right bellow wind ensemble which is the best in our band program. auditions are this week & im hoping to be atleast 2nd chair or stay 3rd chair. but the truth is wind ensemble always plays the best music.
recently i got some good news saying i am in the auburn university symphonic band for high school students!! thats pretty cool.

I'm wondering, has anyone ever had dud reeds? A couple times, i've gotten a new reed and no matter how long I use it it never seems to work. Then when I would try a different reedd, it would work.

By the way, that was my problem before the concert, as I said earlier. accidentally broke my reed before the concert, and when I got a new one, my clarinet worked fine. Still failed at the concert, because for some odd reason I put my reed on weird, probably because I was in a hurry, and spent half of our only song trying to fix it. Got it right just before a clarinet feature in the song, which we did okay besides a few squeaks from other players.
At least I didn't squeak as bad as rehearsal that day, where Ihit the one note I was able to hit because of the instrument issues, and then it turned into a ferocious squeal for almost a whole measure, and then went back to the note a beat before I cut off. it was at the very end of the clarinet feature, which we had done the best we had done it. My friend and part-buddy was like "what the hell was that?!" really loud when we cut off, which was really funny.
and then she knocked her chair down when we stood up at the concert to bow.

UGH I hate dud reads I get at least 3 in every box I get. gets really anoying because each read costs about 4 bucks. So to toss away a non used read makes me upset, but I can't do anything about it.

or..you know, you could hand pick a FEW reeds..instead of buying entire boxes. that way, you're not buying any faulty reeds. but this is just a suggestion

you say "Hey, i'd really appreciate it if i could look at the reeds i'm buying so that i know they're good reeds. would you mind if i inspected these reeds before i buy them?" and if you're really polite about it, they may just let you do it. if not, go to a different store. or, if they won't let you do it, and you don't want to find a different store...O.o don't complain about the "dud" reeds you get.
