[Forgot to mention the -3 penalty to all sight related checks cos of the mist...]

Just as Andou was ready to get relaxed, the boys started the fight and Kuri immediately melted into the mist. It was very accomplished hiding for such a young kid and student new at the shinobi arts. As expected, Rai wasn't able to find him. Although he seemed better at chakra arts, he didn't seem to have the same affinity for taijutsu from this. He'd have to observe him and figure out which skills to work on.

His attention was caught by the kid walking up to him. That was about all he could say about him since he didn't have any distinguishing markers whatsoever. Oh well, that was kind of useful in certain situations...

"Are you a new student? What's your name?" he asked the kid. "Since I asked for yours, I'll offer you mine: Saitou Andou." In response to the student's question, he whipped out a reference booklet from nowhere! Although it was just his pocket really. Just in case something like this was going to happen. "Well you're in luck it seems. I have the hand seal booklet on me at this moment. You can look at it and learn the hand seals while they spar. As for stuff relating to what they're doing, I recommend some push-ups and laps. Temper your body before you jump in the flames," Andou quoted (nonsensically), handing Rou the booklet.

“My name is Tarou Miyazaki. I’ve just moved here a few weeks ago.” Rou said, smiling at the teacher. He seemed like a reasonable man, Rou thought, relieved that he could work on something. Taking the booklet he said a brief thanks, opening it right on the spot. Rou had always been somewhat fascinated with these hand seals, and now that he had a booklet to look at them, he was sure that he would be able to learn them, if he took the time.

But tackling them all in order would be boring. Rou was easily bored, and if he didn’t go about this carefully he would give up; it was a sad fact that even he himself knew. Looking at the various hand seals, he searched for something that caught his interest, his eyes resting on the rabbit hand seal. Rou used to eat hare for dinner at times, his father had hunted them from the forest. It always tasted good and fresh, something that the markets in konoha couldn’t quite compete with.

Perhaps he would start with that, then. It seemed to be an easy enough hand seal, the only problem being that there was no good fit to it. He had to look at the picture carefully, so that he didn’t slide his hand too further in to the other hand.

After some time struggling with the hand seal he thought he finally got it, looking at his hands and then the book. His hands and the book definitely seemed alright, but Rou couldn’t help but feel that something was off. There was most certainly something wrong with his hands, and he just couldn’t tell what. After awhile he grew frustrated, dropping his hand from the attempted hand seal. Perhaps if he started over, it would be easier.

Lifting his hands to attempt at the hand seal once again he paused, noticing something strange. He had lifted his right hand up just like the book, ready to make a shape that resembled a pointing finger. However he noticed that the picture in the book was most likely facing him. So if the picture was facing him… He cleared his head, thinking about the problem at hand.

‘Right. So if if the picture was facing this way, and I’m doing the seal the way I see it…’ He paused. Didn’t that mean that he was mirroring the seal in the book? It made sense now. Rou had been mirroring the book instead of imitating it to the exact detail. So most likely, Rou was supposed to be using his left hand to point, and his right pinky to put in front of his left hand. He would try again, he thought.

Rai gasped from the sudden impact. He figured Kuri would be good but compared to his current level Rai might of well have been fighting the teachers clone while the clone was asleep with one foot and both arms tied back WITH a blindfold. The punch sent Rai skidding back a few feet. He looked up at Kuri "He could have put more force into it but still he's pretty tough." Rai ran towards and hit Kuri anywhere the thought he could. Mostly at Kuri's base. He was afraid he would miss so he did it as quickly as he could. He was shocked that his punch had actually landed a blow. It felt like punching a wall. He landed the hit on Kuri's shoulder.

Today was apparently not a very good day at all. He couldn’t get the hand seal right, and it was quite the easy one. He had fixed the problem with mirroring the hand seal, and he was quite sure that he got the right shape… but it just looked a bit different from the picture. If the teacher was able to help him it would be grand, but he was seemingly busy watching the other two spar. Besides, what kind of ninja would Rou be, if he needed guidance all the time? For one hand seal? Maybe he would continue to do this on his own.

Putting down his hands once more, he slowly put his hands together, and noticed something. The example shown in the booklet seemed a little strange; the pinky shown in the picture was short, and Rou’s pinky finger was much longer than that. Not to mention, the right hand rested on the left hand seemed to stay there but not lock on to the thumb. There was maybe half a centimetre of space between the thumb and the pinky finger. Keeping that duly noted he copied it the way he saw it. He also noticed the way the wrists were completely straight. Maybe he would have to be holding his arms straight to get the correct shape?

Rou tried again, with his left hand pointing to the right of him, and his right pinky pointing to the left of him. He kept his wrists nice and straight, and put his right hand in a fist, all except his pinky finger.

Rou cursed loudly and then worriedly looked around, seeing if anybody had heard. Seeing no one’s attention directed at him, rou sighed, rubbing his left hand. He had done something strange with it and now it sort of throbbed; he had cracked one of his knuckles. It wasn’t just that it had hurt quite a bit. Rou didn’t understand how hard a stupid hand seal could be. It was pretty simple right? It was a pointing finger, and a pinky. Right hand on top of Left hand. What was so hard?

At this rate, he was slowly starting to develop a hate for rabbits. They were perfectly cute and fun to chase even if they always ran away, but this hand seal was such a pain in the butt. It didn’t even look like a rabbit, Rou thought forlornly, glaring at the booklet as if it were its sole enemy. Maybe he would try again. He couldn’t just give up now, because it wasn’t going well. If he did and told his father that, he would probably come and kick his butt. He wondered how his dad was doing now; he still had to find somewhere to work as. Perhaps he could become an official citizen and go on missions, like he used to.

Seeing that he was getting off topic Rou shook his head, going back to glaring at the booklet. He narrowed his eyes as if he was challenging a mere booklet and put his hands up once again, ready to try it for the fourth time. He looked up though, as he saw the boys actively fighting. Earlier on, he could see one boy and the other secretly hidden away. He had missed parts of the fight due to his concentration on the booklet, but he did notice that the first boy who had greeted him had finally gotten a punch in. He looked a bit tired however, and Rou shook his head. Sparring would probably tire him out, so he would have to do push ups and laps before he got started on any of these. And before that, he would have to finish these hand seals. There were twelve of them. He was on his first. This was his fourth try at the first hand seal.

This was going to be a long day.

He didn’t exactly know what determined if he got the hand seal right or wrong. He could think that he got it right, and still be wrong. It was a good thing that Tarou was a good judge of himself and mostly a strict one, for he was finally sure that he had gotten the hand seal right. He craned his neck forward to see what it looked like from the front, and finally, deemed it correct.

“yesssss!” He almost hissed to himself, just above a whisper. He let go of his hands and put them to the side, looking down at the booklet and flipping from page to page. Now which hand seals should he do next? He wasn’t sure if he should’ve started with something that he liked, for now he sort of hated rabbits. Perhaps it was because he liked rabbits, that he thought the hand seal would be a breeze? And maybe that’s why he was so disappointed when he couldn’t do it.

No, Tarou was just simply thinking too much. Sighing, he flipped around the book once again, looking for anything that caught his eyes. As he recalled, his father had once told him that Tarou’s element affinity was earth. Maybe he should work on a handseal for the earth element. In the end, he would end up knowing all of the hand seals so it wasn’t as if it mattered. However, it was something that would get Tarou motivated enough.

If Tarou recalled, the hand seal that was associated with the earth element was the snake… putting his hand in front of him he started to count the twelve zodiac animals. “Ne, Ushi, tora, U, Tatsu, Mi..” Mi was the word for snake, and so that would be on page two. Turning to that page he studied the hand seal, almost as if was suspicious of it. The last one had proved to him, that no matter how easy it looked it could be hard. Although it didn’t seem that hard at all to Tarou; It just seemed like the hand shape some Jesuits made, to be honest. Clamping his hands together, Tarou wondered if it would be that hard at all.

Tarou couldn’t be quite sure if he had gotten it right. It was almost too good to be true. When he had done the Rabbit hand seal, it had taken him forever. It was sort of hard to believe, that the snake seal was done just like that. He reconsidered trying again just to see if he got it right, but decided not to; It was a waste of time, and it looked alright. Tarou would soon finish learning these handseals, and may be then, he could learn some useful ninjutsu or genjutsu to use to fight. He would be looking forward to do that. Unfortunately, he would also have to condition his body, he remembered. He recalled what Andou-sensei had told him: “Temper your body before you jump in the flames.” He wasn’t quite sure what he meant, but he was sure it meant something like, “be ready”. He would ask his father later.

Doing the hand seals did make his arms tired, however. It wasn’t that the hand seals were a difficult task, but because he had to hold his arms out and make sure that his wrists were straight, he ended up having to hold them up for a long time. But then again, getting tired of such things meant that Tarou definitely needed to “temper” his body. Maybe he would do half the handseals and then start running laps or doing push ups? Maybe push ups, since his arms were so weak.

Maybe he would go for a more challenging one next. Looking through the pages he spotted the horse hand seal. It looked sort of cool, unlike the snake and the rabbit. Shrugging, he picked that one, slowly arranging his hands until it started to resemble the picture a bit. It was tricky getting his thumbs in that hook-like shape; his thumbs didn’t like to bend that way, and it sort of hurt. It was a good thing that he was double-jointed.

Maybe the fact that Tarou couldn’t do the first one was because he was taking too light of the activity. Now that he was seriously considering the hand seals, he found it easier to do. He had finished the Horse Hand seal with ease, stretching his fingers to get rid of the stiff feeling in them. Both his arms and hands were somewhat sore. Maybe he should do something that was a bit easier, like boar, or dog. However, the boar had that strange wrist turn to it, and he was afraid that he would be even sorer. He decided that he would do the dog sign, seeing as it was the easiest looking out of them all.

All he had to do was make a fist and then put a palm over that wrist. It was simple enough.

There was something obviously wrong with his hand seal and the one in the booklet. A human being usually learned from their mistakes. Apparently Tarou was not a human being, because he had done the exact same thing. He should’ve expected that this booklet was pure evil; things weren’t as easy as it seemed. Most of all, the ones that looked complicated seemed to be the easier ones.

Looking at the picture Tarou realized that while the right hand was supposed to be in a fist, it should not have been so tightly wound. It was sort of a weak grip, really. And his left hand’s fingertips, which were pointing away from him, should’ve actually been pointing towards his wrist. Why were the hand seals that looked the easiest always so complicated? Maybe it was because the harder looking ones had more things he could go by. Where to put particular fingers, and what not. He sort of wished that the teacher could come up to him and give him tips with some of the hand seals, but he was the one that was behind on everything, so he would have to catch up on his own. He was making good progress anyways; the other two kid’s spar was far from finished, and this meant that Tarou had plenty of time to finish this. He would just have to observe carefully and learn quickly.

Making sure that his wrists were more or less straight he tried it again.

What was Tarou getting wrong? Putting down his hands in frustration he flipped through the book, not looking for anything in particular but using it to distract himself from his own irritation. Noticing that he was sitting down this whole time, he sat himself down onto the somewhat wet ground, not bothering to check if he was sitting on a particularly messy patch of ground. He only noticed when he sat down, that his legs were tired. Now that he didn’t have to focus on standing up, maybe he would be able to do a bit of a better job, he thought hopefully. It was a long shot, but there was a chance of it being true.

Looking down at the book and flipping back to the page with the dog hand seal, he frowned. He closed the distance between his eyes and the booklet, as if close contact with the booklet would help him. It did help him focus, to be fair, even if he did look a bit funny in the head.

And it did work, sort of. Now that he looked at it, Tarou noticed that the fingers on the left hand weren’t completely straightened. Since having forced his knuckles to crack since young age, his fingers were double jointed as well. When he had placed his left hand on his right hand, he had been unconsciously putting his fingers so that they were curved up. Sighing he tried again, making sure that his fingers were completely straight. It was somewhat a hard task, since his pinky fingers did not like to be straight at all. They would curve at the slightest of movement.

When he was little, Tarou had thought that cracking his knuckles was sort of a cool thing to do. Now he knew that he should probably stop very soon; or else he couldn’t be a shinobi.

After examining the hand seal he had made, he finally deemed it okay to pass. It was still a little bit strange, as his pinky finger tried its hardest to not curve upwards. Finally putting down his hands and looking down at the book, he wondered which one he should do next. His attention turned to the ox hand seal; he had never relaly seen an ox in real life, and wondered what they looked like. Perhaps there were some in Konoha that he never saw. The hand seal itself looked kind of cool, he thought, since there were fingers pointing everywhere. (and yes, that was how Tarou rated the ‘coolness’ of hand seals.)

The hand seal was sort of tricky. The picture itself was a bit confusing, since he couldn’t tell whether that finger at the end was a pinky finger or the thumb. He finally decided that it was the pinky finger, since the picture was a mirrored version. His left middle and ring finger would go down to rest on his right hand, while the index and pinky finger would stand upright. It was somewhat irritating; in the picture, the hand seal looked quite neat and proper. Unfortunately, Tarou couldn’t make it look the same. It looked more like a mess than usual. It was most likely because he had cracked his knuckles so much; his bones had gotten thick and how it wasn’t at the width where he could fit it in the spaces between his fingers without his hand spreading wide open.

Frowning, Tarou decided to try it nonetheless; perhaps it would look right. He was sure that it didn’t have to be completely correct, especially if his fingers made it physically impossible to do it.

The blow sent Kuri reeling back, his shoulder throbbing from the force of the punch. For someone who wanted to be a medic, Rai packed quite a wallop. "Lucky shot," Kuri joked as he backed away into the mists for another go.

Quiet as a mouse, he skulked through the shadows, watching Rai like a predator staring at his prey.
