It's the Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston! The episode is called Rose, it's the first episode of the first season of the new series! [/Whoviannerd]
...There are only five seasons finished so far. We're in the middle of the sixth season, and there will be a seventh season. o____o It hasn't ended.
If you're asking about Doctors 1-8, they're from the old series, broadcasted from the 60's to the 80's. The 8th was in a TV movie in the 90's. It's the longest running Science Fiction show, you know, Doctor Who.

I was asking which Doctor exactly, the number, but I imagined as much. It surprised me that the first season of the show would have Billie Piper, because I knew my brother had said the same thing, about it being the longest running Sci-Fi show. =0
I honestly thought it was Star Trek, up until that point. =P

Well, they started counting again when they restarted. If they were still going off of the seasons from classic Who, season 1 of the new series would really be season 27.
Star Trek was first aired in 1966, while Doctor Who was first aired in 1963. And Star Trek, while in the same universe, has a different name with each reincarnation, while Doctor Who is Doctor Who, whether it's 1960's Doctor Who or 1980's Doctor Who or the 90's movie Doctor Who or 2005 Doctor Who. Hell, seasons 5 and 6 feels completely different from any other seasons, and yet it's still Doctor Who, so it's counted as one series, rather than various spin-offs.

But yeah, I undestand. With the Next Generation and Deep Space 9 and blah blah, whosiwhatsit. Star Trek, I mean. But aren't all the Doctors the same person or something like that? You know, to keep it all tied together? Or do they get assigned the position or something? And why is he called, the 'Doctor'? o-o

It's just that when he dies (or is about too), he can "regenerate", which brings him back to lie but also change his appearance and his personality =D
And he's call The Doctor because he wants too!
