ligature material, while not as important as the piece, can have a drastic effect on the tone of a reed instrument. leather ligatures tend to have a "darker" tone quality than a metal ligature. metal ligatures, although "brighter", play louder...which will help you be heard. since it's not ALWAYS the tone quality you're looking for, being louder isn't always better..because what's the point of being heard if you don't sound as good as you should sound? also, plastic ligatures are usually going to play more like metal ones, only quieter and a little darker. also, the more area of the reed that is being covered by the ligature will mellow the sound and make you quieter. the less area being covered will usually harsh your sound and make you louder. remember, though, these are only generalizations. you can have a harsh leather mouthpiece, a mellow metal mouthpiece, etc.

Okay. Thanks for the info.

So, when I was in 7th grade, my BD had a private instructor come do some small group instruction for clarinets, and he ahd a cear mouthpiece. I was wondering: Would this affect your sound? Are there different colored mouthpieces besides black, clear, white and silver, and does color affect tone quality?

Does anyone here have a wooden clarinet? Like its acutally made out of wood and not the plastic ones. I have one and I've been told it has better sound than the plastics, but when I tune with my friend we sound about the same...

the actual COLOR doesn't affect anything. the MATERIAL affects everything, on the other hand. I'll admit, i haven't done very extensive research on clarinet mouthpieces, i'm much more of a saxophone fanatic, so i don't know all the materials they use for clarinet mouthpieces. I know they use "hard rubber" and plastic, obviously, and i'm fairly sure they use "ebonite"(a mixture of plastic and rubber, if i remember correctly) i can't say i've ever seen a metal clarinet mouthpiece, but i'm sure you could get one. all of these things will give your clarinet a different sound, so if you want to look into buying a new mouthpiece, you might want to try a bunch of different things out.

when they say it "has a better sound" they don't mean "it will be more in tune". they mean that the overall QUALITY is better. the tone of a wooden clarinet is usually a lot darker and "fuller" and warmer than a plastic clarinet. I have a wooden Noblet clarinet, and it sounds very rich and dark, but i play my plastic clarinet because i, personally, sound better on it. i can't get the sound to come out as easily on the Noblet, and for some reason the sound is inconsistent as i go from the lowest E to the high G(an octave above the staff). so i play the plastic clarinet, not because it sounds more beautiful, but because i can actually play it easily.

Oh... well thanks :3 Another question, like I had a wooden mouth piece that went with my clarinet but my friend knocked over my clarinet and it litterly chipped a huge hole in the piece. So I had to get a plastic one, does that change a sound even though my clarinet is still wooden? I really didn't notice it when I got it... just curious...

it will change the sound, but not necessarily in a bad way. like i said earlier, mouthpiece material has a huge affect on overall sound. you could always try a wooden mouthpiece if you want, to see if you like it better than your plastic one

Never question band teacher. wink Anyways, so I've been playing the clarinet for a year and a half, and I'm pretty darn good. Second chair clarinet amongst those that have more experience than me! Yay for practicing.

6 years at the clarinet and I'm still bemused as to why mine will squeak on me. I've gotten different types of reeds, different strengths, and the things can be brand new or worn down for several weeks but it's still squeaks now and then. @_@ It's dangerous, since it's marching season and concert season is just around the corner.... I'm starting to believe it's just my actual instrument that has something wrong with it...
Any ideas?

it could be the placement of the reed on the mouthpiece. that is something that happens to me if i don't pay attention to where i put the reed. also could be your mouthpiece...might need to buy a new one for it to work properly with your instrument. also could be the reed strength you're trying to use. reed strength should coincide with your mouthpiece's tip opening. the bigger the tip opening, the smaller the reed size should be. also the smaller the tip opening, the stronger the reed should be.

Hi, i'm new to this band guild but i have been playing the clarinet for about 6 years now. And you guys will probably think this is stupid of me, but i need advice. I have trouble motivating myself to practice my instrument (i used to practice it alot but i've just lost my spark because of all the homework and projects i get.) can someone give me any ideas that would motivate me to play?
