TomatoMOOSH Need help again. Almost every time I try to play an actual NOTE, I either wind up making this awful high-pitched squonk, or not being able to blow through the clarinet at all. your mouth might be too far up the mouthpiece. a good rule to follow is to put your mouth were the reed meets the mouthpiece. slip a piece of paper between the reed and mouthpiece and mark the spot that it stops(don't FORCE the paper through, just gently push).

Hey! I play the Clarinet too! And for the person who said they cant get notes out, uhhh i say that when ur blowing and u put ur mouth and the mouth piece you want ur mouth so its like just touching the litature and make sure ur litature is down farther and the clarinet closer to the barrel. I like Vandoren reeds. My music teacher suggests that those are the best. Rico's are BAD REEDS. Also u need to clean ur clarinet and that gives it better sound. If ur reed isn't on perfectly or it's slanted it'll be harder to play. u dont want ur reed to get too wet or else it'll stick to the mouthpiece and u won't be able to play. I hope this Advice helped. If u got anymore questions just ask! I've been playing clarinet since I was 5! ;] ;]

you might also have the wrong size reed for your skill level, typically in middle school level you use a 2 and in the highschool level you use a 3 or 4

High school freshman clarinetist here! I've been playing for about 4 years now and started in 6th grade. i love it but we have a lot of people who slack off and don't want to pass off which makes me so mad! scream but this year, i really hope we go to state! So watch out marching bands, because you're about to face the mighty Wagner Thunderbird Marching Band! mrgreen

It only took me a couple days to go from a 3 to a 4.

Charlie Parker, a VERY famous,VERY professional, saxophone player used size 2s or size 2 1/2s. reed strength has nothing to do with playing ability.
