The use of the term vampire probably differs from each individual, especially depending on how old they are, and how the GM of each gaming group dictates Camarilla policy.
In Bloodlines, the term "vampire'' is thrown around off and on. In someone's PnP game, it may NEVER be used for the exact reason Naota described.
For WoD vampires, I prefer Kindred or Cainite myself, just because it helps denote that you're using a SPECIFIC sort of vampire from a specific universe, as opposed to something taken from elsewhere, or possibly generic. Cainite/Kindred is specifically WoD territory.

[ Cognitive Genome ] Yeah, sorry for the delay. One of my classmates came in sick yesterday and I think I caught what the b*****d had. Been feeling more and more progressively s**t. God, my body has not liked me these past few months. I'll see if I feel better after the meds tonight or tomorrow. Can't even work enough energy to post for the wimmenz. Cog, I'm sure Vin will let us Pime Terradox the ball so we can finish our brawl. so take your time and get better, its more fun that way.

Ed: Must be why I don't really want to play those kinds of characters. Their are far too many similar but incompatible 'vampires. Not sure about differences in Werewolves, but Lycanthropes are just too Furryesque for me.

Generally, it depends on the Vampire.
A century old Ventrue might get pissed if you call him a vamp.
A group of young Anarchs probably won't give a s**t.
