As Sam walked back to the lab, she noticed the young lady again. "Hi, I'm Sam" as she walked towards her. The girl looked up. "I'm Kasiya. This is Nova," she said pointing to the Charmander. Sam nodded. An awkward silence fell. "Well...I'd better go get Star healed." She shifted Star's weight to her other arm, and Star...well it sounded like she mewled, but she wasn't a Skitty or Meowth so Sam wasn't sure what to call it. As Sam was waiting in the lab, a young boy came in. He couldn't have been older then 10. "Proffessor! I want a different pokemon! This one sucks! It isn't rare, and I keep losing!" Oak, who had just come back in with Star playing at his feet, sighed. "Tony, I told you, your pokemon needs to grow and get used to you before it gets better. Try training before you go after other Trainers and Gym leaders. It would be a lot easier on you, and your pokemon." The kid, Tony, huffed. He glanced around, and noticed Star watching a Butterfree flying outside the window. "What is that? It looks really rare," he said greedily, as he came towards Star. "Hey! She's mine! HEY! Leave her alone!" Sam shouted, as the kid picked Star up. Star didn't know who this little weirdo was, so she bit him. He yelped, and dropped her. "What's going on?" Kasiya had walked in. "This is so not fair! This girl here decides she's just going to randomly become a trainer and she gets this great pokemon! All I got was this failure!" Tony threw a pokeball in disgust, and out popped a small pokemon, brown in color, with huge teeth. Sam didn't recognize it. She pulled out her new pokedex. "Bidoof, the Plump Mouse Pomemon" it cooed. Tony turned at the sound. "You?! You have a pokedex! This is a joke! Oh sure, anyone can be a trainer now!" He smirked. "I could your pathetic butt any day." Sam looked at Oak. He shrugged, and so did Kasiya. "If you want go ahead," Oak told her. Sam looked back at Tony. She didn't like the pompous, sexist little pig. "You're on"

They stood on opposite ends of a field. Star was dancing up and down one edge, and the Bidoof was nibbling on a treat in the far corner. Sam crossed her arms. "Well? Are you gonna do this or what?" she spat. Tony looked down at the Bidoof. "Bidoof, Tackle that stupid fish. Make sure it doesn't get back up." The Bidoof looked at him. "Bi!" It dashed forward. Star was too busy dancing to notice. "Star! Watch out! Pay attention!" Star ignored Sam's warnings. Why should she? Star was a diva, and she didn't want to listen to anyone but herself. Suddenly she was airborne. She saw the sky, and a couple of trees. She tried to grab a couple of branches on her way down to break her fall. She couldn't hang on long enough, and hit the ground with a thud. She lay there for a moment. Owwww...Star flipped over and got to her feet. She was furious. How dare someone throw her! She saw the Bidoof coming in for another pass. She, however, knew what it was doing, and waited. A second too late though. As she attempted to jump over the Bidoof, it caught her tail. Star came crashing down. As the Bidoof tried to grab her tail again, she spun around and Growled. "Oh...o-o-okay Star! Good job!" Sam called from the sidelines. She felt left out somehow, like she didn't have much control over this. Is this how battling really was? The Bidoof cam charging again, and Star waited again. Instead of trying to dodge it, it instead lunged forward and bit down hard on the Bidoof's nose. The Bidoof kept running and knocked Star out of the way. "Star! Be careful!" Sam's worried voice carried over the entire field. "Bidoof! Don't you dare stop, you worthless idiot! That Bite was nothing!" Tony cried.

Crenu had to admit that he hadn't expected the Machop to break the silken bonds that Ariados had Wrapped it in so easily, but he was not all that surprised. Ariados took the blow well however and though the force pushed her head into the ground she was able to quickly snap it back up and knock the Super Power Pokemon away from her, looking relatively unharmed. "Good Ariados, now follow up with Poison Sting." Ariados nodded and immediately went into her next attack, taking aim at the pokemon and with a motion similar to her Constrict she fired a barrage of poison filled needles at Brawly's Machop. The damage wouldn't be great, but by chipping away Crenu figured he could wear Brawly's pokemon down without getting in any unnecessary danger. There was a problem with the current strategy in that if Machop got poisoned, one of his two abilities would activate. If this Machop carried Guts, then a poisoning would serve to boost it's power which would do nothing to help him, but it was a risk Crenu was already planning for.

"Huh, not bad blond dude! Don't lose your momentum Machop and hit them with another Karate Chop! Make this one a big splash!" Machop almost appeared to be grinning as Ariados knocked him back, switching his footing and actually using the force to swing himself around. The muscles in his arms tightened as he came around with another chop, taking the poison sting directly and pushing through the damage to deliver a harsh blow to the pink spider before him. The blow connected again with devastating force, it looked like a critical hit this time as well. Machop leaped back putting some distance between him and Ariados, but was still within an effective striking radius. "That's right Machop, don't let up!"

What the hell was that? Such a well controlled maneuver in an instant, very strange. But at least I've got Brawly's style figured out. The way Machop was able to roll around the field like that was similar to a strategy Crenu himself used a few times with Poliwag, but this was on a much more perfected level. It wasn't unlike the motions of a Surfer working around the crashing waves without falling off their board, and being a surfer it wasn't surprising that Brawly would work that into his battling. But what was really important to take away from that last attack was Brawly's straight offensive tactics. Even now his Pokemon was close enough for immediate striking, and Machop didn't appear to even try avoiding the poison sting. Brawly was all out offensive taking his opponents out with pure power, as to be expected from a fighting type expert. But it was to early to decide that this was the strategy for all his pokemon as it was really the only strategy to go with when using a Machop. Crenu grinned at this, as it was his own strategy when using Hitmonlee and Larvitar, to an extent, so he should have little problems countering it. Still, Ariados had taken a really hard hit just now so caution was to be factored in any future strategies. "Ariados, let's play keep away shall we? String shot now!" Ariados's head was pounding, but she glared at her opponent as he looked at her smugly. He would pay for that last one indeed. She used her strong legs to leap backwards several meters as she released another strand of silk from her mouth, though this one was stickier and much more direct.

The sticky silk washed over Mochop and held his body together quite well. it particularly stuck around his feel and legs reducing his mobility and speed, but his movements all around were going to become more sluggish as a result. "Don't let them throw you off your board Machop, get in there with a Seismic Toss and wipe out that spider!" Brawly was rather enjoying this match so far and had a jolly yet serious air about him, very unlike this opponent. Machop ran forward with outstretched arms as he tried to close the gap Ariados had created as fast as he could which was admittedly more difficult than it should have been but still doable.

"Ariados move." And with a taunting hiss from her jaws Ariados leaped out of Machop's reach and landed on the other side of him moments before she was caught in his grasp. "Sorry Brawly, but you won't catch Ariados that way. Moving like that I'd say this is over, of Machop manages to land another hit you'd better hope it does her in." Crenu was semi bluffing, because he knew that he wouldn't be able to outrun Machop and attack him at the same time. But if he was right about what Brawly might do then he would have a chance to end this quickly. That critical hit is what really messed things up, as it was forcing Crenu to move much more carefully that he had originally intended to. "We can call this first match my win if you want. Up to you."

"No way dude, Machop and I never pull out of a tough looking wave. Instead we meet it full force! Machop gets pumped with Bulk Up!" A bit uncomfortable to be laying off of the offense, Machop reluctantly went with it for the moment. It was ok after all, it was going to help his pummeling become even harder after all. Machop took several deep breaths and calmed and flexed his muscles happily. His body took an odd glow as his muscles suddenly appeared to expand and grow more solid. "Bulk Up raises both attack and defense, so Machop 'll be able to plow through even the toughest waves to crush your pokemon!"

"Don't give 'em a chance Ariados, Night Shade while they're preparing!" Crenu was familiar with Bulk Up, though that hadn't been what he was expecting it was along the same lines. He had planned for Focus Energy, but this would work out pretty much the same so no major adjustments were needed for his plan. Ariados again jumped into position but this time she actually moved forward. Releasing a pulsating dark aura from her legs the shade scurried across the sand and leaped onto Machop, covering his body and doing it's damage.

"Make it another big splash Machop and use Karate Chop!" Machop seemed happy to have a closer target and charged in for the next attack, the odd shadow's sting wearing off now as he attempted to end the battle with his mighty hand. The chop sounded like it cut the wind as he swung it through the air.

"Don't let him touch you Ariados!" Leaping to the side Ariados barely dodged the Chop, but was much to close to her opponent for comfort. It appeared over as the next hit was a sure one for Machop.

"Can't run this time dude, you're spider is mine! Machop, Seismic Toss! Let's end this battle with a big crash!" Machop vigorously complied as he made for the Long Leg Pokemon and grabbed her with his arms, leaping high up into the air with her and coming down with a mighty spin. All that was left was the feel of the hard sand pounding against the spider's skull.

"...Perfect. Ariados, Hidden Power." There was a slight grin on Crenu's face, one that could have been easily missed even if you were looking at him directly. As they spun down to earth Ariados cleared her head as best she could. Rather than fight the grapple she embraced the close proximity and unleashed a multitude of glowing electrified spheres in in many directions, mostly right into her opponent's body. Taking a direct hit from the powerful attack Machop's body received a heavy shock and he released his grasp. Blasted back he fell onto the sand fairly hard while Ariados did her best to correct herself, hitting the sand with a thud and staggering to her feet from the mitigated Seismic Toss. She hadn't taken many hits so far, and they weren't particularly effective at all. Yet there was still some good force behind them and they did tire her out some. Given rest time she'd be right as rain, but she'd go on to the next round if she had to.

Machop on the other hand was not so lucky. That was a strong attack, and raising his defense did nothing to power down those last two attacks. Machop tried to get up, but he simply wasn't strong enough to handle that kind of damage. He fell back down defeated by the challenger.

"Machop is unable to battle, first round goes to the challenger!" Needless to say she was disappointed, the trainer called it as it was. It was time for round two.

Serenity nodded and gave a small wave good bye to the two people who had travelled with her, then her and George walked slowly to her childhood home. A week ago she walked through these streets with some trepidation about going out on her own, and leaving the beautiful buildings and gardens that were every where. Now she was walking through everything remembering how it was two years ago. Everyone in the city had pitched together and rebuilt everything quite fast, but in her mind Sere could only see the devistation that had happened.

As she neared her home, she allowed George to bounce ahead to meet some of his friends. Serenity smiled as she heard the pokemon start to chatter. She could tell that they were excited to see their old friend all grown up, and she was sure that George was excited that he could show his new evolution to everyone. She couldn't believe how proud she was of him. The evolution had come as a surprise, but Sere couldn't be happier to have him as a Marshtomp walking beside her. It helped to make her feel safer after the events of late. Plus travelling to the region would be nerve racking.

She saw Alex come out of the front door as she neared the fence. Serenity had to keep her self from crying but she still ran straight into her older sister's arms.

"Hey you." Alex said. Sere could feel her kiss the top of her head.

"Hi." Serenity pulled back and took a better look at her sister. There were lines of worry on her face. "Oh...You watched the news."

Both pomeon backed up, panting. A bruise was quickly forming on Star's body, and the Bidoof's teeth were stained pink from the blood dripping down it's nose. Neither trainer said anything, both staring each other down. Sam didn't notice the Bidoof backing up ever so slightly, into a position where he could take off like a rocket. Star was still trying to catch her breath. She was already exhausted, and the Bidoof seemed no worse for wear. Sam thought hard about what she could do to possibly win this fight.

'The Bidoof seems to be relying on blunt force and speed...So if I can some how slow it down...Although it isn't any faster then Star in the first place ' She remembered watching a pokemon battle when she was little. One of the trainers had used a pokemon called Forretress. Before they started he told everyone watching to back up. The first move he used was Spikes, which effectively stopped his opponent from charging at him. Sam shook her head and brought herself back to reality. The Bidoof had launched itself and was currenty chasing Star around the ring. Star was staying ahead, but just barely. She kept tripping...Sam looked at the field. It was riddled with holes from pokemon using Dig! She thought back to the Spikes. 'This could work...'

"Would you catch up already?! It is not that fast!" Tony shouted as the Bidoof tried to pour on more speed. It was quickly losing energy. "Bidoof, you idiot! TACKLE IT! TACKLE IT NOW!" Tony was practically frothing at the mouth. The Bidoof was becoming less and less focused.

"Star! Only run near the holes! Try and make the silly Bidoof fall in!" Sam figured the Plump Mouse pokemon was not the brightest or most graceful pokemon, and would trip just like Star. Star didn't acknowledge that she had heard, merely changed course towards the holes. As the Bidoof tried one last time, it tripped and missed it's mark. Star took her oppurtunity.

"Star! BITE!" Sam was getting into the rythm. The excitement was infectious. Star rammed into the Bidoof with her teeth bared. She bit its small tail, and spun it around. Her true strength showed through when she let the poor pokemon fly. It flew towards the edge of the field, slamming against a tree trunk, and landing with a soft thump. Tony ran over, and nudged it with his foot. It stood up.

"Can you fight?" Tony asked it. It looked at him with an expression of Are-you-kidding-please-don't-make-me-do-this. Tony nodded as if he understood, then kicked the pokemon. "Get up you lazy, useless--"

"Tony!" Oak's voice was suddenly very sharp. It startled Tony. "He can't fight. If you force it to battle, you could kill it." This shamed Tony. He may have thought the pokemon was useless, but he didn't want it to die. Oak turned to Sam. "Congratulations. I was im--"

"Star, no! Leave it alone!" Star was charging towards the Bidoof again, unaware the battle was over. She bit the Plump Mouse's soft belly, leaving deep puncture marks. "Star! Stop it!" Sam cried, and she ran over and pulled the Mudkip away. She looked into Star's eyes and saw fiery determination and a hint of bloodlust. It scared her. She dumped cold water on Star's face. She immediately snapped out of it, and danced happily beneath the freezing stream.

"Muuuudkip! Muuudkip!" Star sang out. Sam looked back the Bidoof. It seemed alright, and Tony was applying bandages and a Potion.

Still not sure where she was going, Riza continued to walk along the streets of Lilycove with her cheerful Corphish in tow. The crab was still acting quite antsy, as it was constantly clacking its pincers together every time they passed someone on the street. At first Riza would apologize for her Pokemon's behavior but soon she decided that it wasn't that big of a deal and that it was just her corphish's way of saying hello to everyone. She did pick up on the crab's anxiety though, and after thinking about it a bit she realized that Corphish wanted to battle. "I'm sorry Corphish but there isn't really anyone around who looks like they want to battle," Riza said a bit ruefully, being sure to keep her hands out of the crab's reach. She didn't want her reaching up and snapping off one of her fingers because there was no one to battle with. Then again she could always train her Pokemon against each other, but she didn't really know what they all thought of each other yet. Well, of corphish anyway. Sneasel and Ralts seemed to get along just fine.

A short time later Riza recalled Corphish, more because of the fact that the clacking pincers was starting to drive her batty than anything else. She had arrived in the shopping district by now, and she smiled as she remembered the ticket that the red head had given her. "It's time to do a little shopping," she said quietly. The first building she laid her eyes on was the Lilycove Department Store and she scoffed aloud. There was no way she could keep the promise she'd made to Keegan earlier if she settled for a dress from a department store like this one. She continued to look around, knowing that she wouldn't be buying the most expensive dress she could find, but she definitely wanted it to be a nice one. After a while of searching she found the perfect shop and she headed inside, quite eager to give her dad's credit card a bit of a workout.

'Okay, I know that protect has less of a chance of working properly with successive usage, so if we attack it again, chances are good the hit will get through,' Katie thought as she watched Noa circle back up in the air while shooting an angered glare down at the offending burmy. She'd been wanting to knock it out with one good hit but then it had to use that silly barrier! The starly huffed and flapped her wings indignantly. "Okay Noa, I want you to do that again! Wing attack!" The small bird was more than happy to oblige and she quickly sped forward, letting out a shrill cry just before her outstretched wings made solid contact with the leafy-cloaked bug. It let out a pained cry and tumbled backwards, losing many of the leaves it was using to cover its body in the process. It was the first cry by Noa that managed to break through to Genki, and suddenly the Chimchar sat up and blinked a few times, obviously confused as to why he had been sleeping during a fight. "Welcome back, Genki!" Katie called, before pointing to the mime jr. "Now take that thing out with a scratch attack!" Shaking out the last of the cobwebs the small chimp dashed forward and raked his claws across the small psychic's body several times. Katie hadn't realized it, but Genki was actually using fury swipes. The repeated hits were enough to take the mime jr down and it toppled over. "Phew, one more down," she mumbled, watching as it recalled. 'That just leaves this Burmy and whatever the last Pokemon she sends out is.'

"This is going faster than I thought it would," the girl said with a giggle, even though she was in no position to win this fight. "But at least my Pokemon are getting some practice in. Okay, last Pokemon. Let's do our best, staravia!" The sphere was flung and suddenly Katie and her Pokemon found themselves looking at Starly's evolved form. The larger bird let out a chilling cry that made both Genki and Noa shiver with fright, and even Katie took a step back.

"Okay, wasn't expecting that!"

Alex was going out to check to see if the paper had come in when she saw her battered and bruised sister walking up to the front of the house. To say that Serenity looked like crap would be quite the understatement. The look on her face, and the colours of her bruises reflected the battle that she had seen on TV the night before. She was surprised at how calm the girl looked. 'Though Sere usually keeps everything bottled all up for it to explode at a latter date.' Alex thought.

She opened her arms wide as her little sister basically collapsed into them. Alex could feel her younger sister shuddering as though she was going to cry, but she knew there would be no tears on her sisters face as she pulled away.

"Hi." She said.

"Oh...You watched the news." Serenity whispered.

"Yes. Come inside. Where is that pokemon of yours?" Alex looked around and was surprised to see that there was not a Mudkip following her little sister but instead a Marshtomp. 'It must have happened after the chaos that was yesterday.'

******

Serenity felt warm standing next to her sister, for this first time since the battle the night before. Everything kind of felt right. She thought about calling George into the house with her but when she saw how happy he was playing with his old friends, she decided not to.

"He's over there." She said pointing him out to her sister, before going inside the house.

She wondered how weird it was to be back in the house. Sere maybe had only been away a week, but everything now felt so very different. She couldn't make the feeling go away. There was a hope that a good nights rest would make everything go away, if she could get through the night with out dreaming anyway.

Serenity made her way to the livingroom and plopped her self down on the chair. She sighed thankful for being in something comfortable.

"So, did you see everything that happened down at Slateport?" She asked Alex as she came into the room carrying two cups of coffee. Her sister just nodded

"I saw everything. It was hard not to. Ever station on the TV was showing every detail of the whole attack. It should have been anticipated really, that Rocket would show up and try and mess everything up." Alex sat down on the couch across from her sister.

Robin's other pokemon looked over at her in happy surprise. None of them had known when they would be leaving Cerulean, and while challenging for the gym badge would be fun to they were fine with anything. Raz just grinned down at her from his perch on top of her head, across from her Luffy was dozing contentedly his belly full, Brook just grinned up at her, down on the floor Slowpoke just had a dopey look on his face. Seeing that her pokemon were not opposed to coming with her Robin couldn't help a small glimmer of hope appear in her heart again. "Well then, lets get going to Sla-"

"Um excuse me?" Came a polite voice from behind her as well as an overwhelming smell.

Blinking a few times Robin had to make an effort to not plug her nose. Turning around in her seat she looked up at who had interrupted her. It turned out it was a brown haired woman with a kind look on her face. She also had a small pack behind her that Robin thought, but wasn't sure, all the smell was coming from. "Erm... Can I help you?"

"Ah yes, you are a trainer correct?"

Wondering where this was going Robin answered hesitantly. "Yes." Technically she was right now, even if her pokemon would want to leave her soon though.

" Oh thank goodness, I have been looking all day for a trainer. You see I wish to challenge Misty, however I want to test myself right now, to see if I am good enough. So could I have a battle against you?"

Robin wasn't sure what to do, the woman had asked really nicely. Well, even if she wasn't to into battling right now this nice, if smelly women deserved a battle. "Ok, sure, can we just make it a one on one battle though?"

"Oh of course! I just need to see if I am ready for a gym battle." The woman smiled in relief and waited as Robin picked herself up and recalled all of her pokemon but Luffy. Instead she just reached over and paused for a moment before picking the sleeping Ambipom up. "All right I am ready to battle now." Both of them headed out after telling Nurse Joy that they would need a healing after a small battle. "Are you ready?" The smelly lady asked.

"As ready as I can be right now." Robin stated as she set Luffy down on the ground.

"All right lets get this battle started, and thank you again for agreeing to this." That said the smelly lady tossed out a park ball to reveal a powerful looking Sunflora.

Robin reached back for Brooks pokeball but hesitated for a moment. Brook had never battled a pokemon that powerful before, he had never actually won against any of the weaker pokemon to. No she wouldn't send Brook out against certain death, she would send Raz out instead, the sparky Yanma was always ready and he was pretty strong. "All right Raz it's time to show everyone your stuff!" She said as she tossed out her own parkball.

Mother and son sat at their kitchen table, wordless for a long while. Mrs. Edwards’ soft, muffled sobs remained the only sound between them. She cried; Kenneth tended to his wound and slumped further and further into his chair, shame curdling his guts.

Something scratched at the door. Kenneth stiffened at the sound, sitting forward, ears and eyes open. His eyes widened further as the scratching turned to snuffling.

“Toh?”

Kenneth shot from his chair. The ice pack fell to the table. “Sh*t! It’s back!” he hissed.

“Watch your mouth, young man,” Mrs. Edwards scolded, lowering her hands and rubbing her reddened eyes. “What’s back?”

“That demented Pokemon! It followed me here,” Kenneth hissed, jolting up from his chair and rushing to the door. He pressed his eye to the peephole, and sure enough, he spotted the two-foot-tall, blue Pokemon scratching at the door with its forepaws.

“A Pokemon?” Mrs. Edwards got up from her chair and joined Kenneth at the door.

“Yeah, some stupid little monster. I tripped over its egg as it was hatching, so it thinks I’m its mother or something.” He stepped aside from the viewhole to give his mom a look.

“Aww, that’s so sweet!” she cooed. She unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

“NO!” Kenneth cried, pushing into the doorway to put himself between his mom and the Totodile. “Don’t let it in! It could be dangerous! It’s got these huge jaws--”

The Totodile blinked up at Mrs. Edwards, its red eyes huge. It let out a mewling purr. “Toooh.”

“How cute!” the woman cooed, shoving past her son to drop on her knees and pat the little creature on the head. “Not as cute as an Eevee or a Pachirisu maybe, but he’s still so adorable!” She shot a disapproving look up at her son. “Kenneth! How could you call this sweet little creature a monster?”

“Mom, don’t touch it!” the teenager flailed. “Look at those jaws! It could take your hand clean off!”

The Totodile rubbed his head against Mrs. Edwards’ hand, purring. “Toh, toooh.”

“Hey! Back off, beast!” Kenneth snapped at the Pokemon, lurching forward. “If you even think about hurting her, I swear I’ll turn you into a suitcase, got it?”

The Totodile shrugged off Mrs. Edwards’ hand and waddled towards Kenneth. “Toh.”

He took a step back. “Oh no. I told you before to get away from me. I’m NOT your momma.”

The Totodile continued forward, unabated. “Toh. Toh, toh.”

“Are you deaf? I said buzz off!”

“Tooooooooh.”

Kenneth’s lower back bumped against the sink. He flinched, realizing he could not longer back up. His mother stood and turned, stifling laughter behind her hand as she watched the baby Pokemon corner her son. He shot a glance at her; she was blocking his only exit. There was nowhere to run.

It tilted its head at Kenneth, blinking up at him with huge red eyes. “Toh?”

“I said NO, you dumb animal!”

“Don’t say things like that, Ken!” Mrs. Edwards scolded, closing the door behind her and moving to sit back at the table. “Pokemon are not dumb animals. They are companions, compatriots in battle, and lifelong friends. They’re very clever, actually—you can command them to do specific things, and they can learn complex moves.”

The Totodile pressed its head to Kenneth’s leg once again, purring contentedly. He gave it a bland, disgruntled look.

“This little Totodile seems very fond of you,” Mrs. Edwards chuckled. “I think you have a responsibility to him, Kenneth. You two found each other. You need to raise him and train him, take care of him and treat him like a member of the family. In turn, he may prove to be the greatest friend you’ve ever had.”

Kenneth shot his mother an incredulous look. “You’re saying I should be a Pokemon Trainer? Mom, you’ve gotta be kidding me! That’s the most useless thing someone could ever waste their life on!” He ground his teeth, averting his gaze from his mother’s face as he took on a bitter look. “Chasing after Pokemon is what kids do to escape from reality,” he growled. “Being a Trainer is just a way to cling onto stupid childish games and run away from what really matters.”

Mrs. Edwards fell silent. For a moment, she fixed her son with a soft, understanding look. The Totodile drew back, blinking up at Kenneth with wide, curious eyes.

She stood and moved towards him. The Totodile stepped back to allow her passage, to allow her to draw her son into a hug.

“So you don’t want to leave your mother alone?” she said softly, petting his hair.

“Of course not,” he murmured. “I’m all you’ve got. I’m not gonna run off on some stupid ‘adventure’ and just leave you high and dry. I’m not Dad.”

She stiffened at that, but held her son tighter nonetheless. “You’re a good boy, Ken,” she whispered. “You’ve made some bad choices—like joining that awful gang—but you’re a good boy. You’ve always wanted to look after me. But there comes a time in every man’s life when he must look after himself, Ken.” She pulled away from him, planting her hands on his shoulders and studying his face. “You have to find your own way.”

He swallowed as he met his mother’s eyes, his expression tight.

“I love you, sweetheart,” she said, smiling as she brushed messy blond strands away from his face. “I’m not trying to throw you out or anything silly like that. And if you left on a journey to become a Trainer, you wouldn’t be abandoning me. You could come home any time you like.”

His expression tightened further. “It’s still useless,” he insisted stonily. “Pokemon aren’t human beings.”

“No, but they have thoughts and feelings like humans,” Mrs. Edwards returned, her scolding tone making a comeback. “As such, they should always be treated with kindness. What’s more, you’re wrong, Mr. Know-It-All.” She smiled and tapped a finger on his nose, causing the teenager to scowl. “Being a Pokemon trainer earns an honorable and successful livelihood.”

Kenneth boggled at that. “You mean…there’s money in it?”

“Of course,” Mrs. Edwards chuckled. “How else do you think a Trainer survives life on the road?”

Kenneth felt like the floor had been pulled out from under him. All this time…he never knew. A golden opportunity had been staring him in the face this whole time and he never knew.

The Totodile ambled up to Kenneth again, pushing his head insistently against the teenager’s leg. “Toh.”

The blond looked down at the reptile and suddenly saw the creature in a whole new light. “Totodile, was it?”

“Toh, toh!” The thing’s broad maw stretched into a toothy grin. Kenneth grimaced; how would he keep this beast from biting off people’s hands?

“Dumb name for a gator,” he growled.

“Gator,” Mrs. Edwards giggled, pulling away from her son and kneeling in front of the Totodile once more. “What a cute nickname for your Pokemon!” She patted the creature’s head and smiled up at Kenneth. “Looks like you’re already on your way to becoming a Trainer.”

Just hearing himself and that title in the same sentence made Kenneth’s stomach turn in disgust. But if being a Trainer meant bringing in money to support his mom…if being a Trainer made his mother smile…

“If you say so,” he grumbled.

"Woh , wipe out. You did your best buddy." Brawly called back his pokemon and got ready for the second sound. "Alright, your up next Meditite! This gym challenge is far from over Crenu. I wanna enjoy this round just as much as the last one." From the pokeball erupted a strange looking blue pokemon sitting in a yoga position with its hands clasped as if it were in a trance. Hearing the call for battle his eyes opened and he stood up preparing for the fight.

"A Meditite is it? I've seen one of these already, I think I remember it using something to avoid all kinds of attacks....Alright Ariados take a break, I may need you later." Crenu recalled Ariados to her pokeball where she would be able to catch her breath before he brought her out again for battle. Indeed, she had done well and proved she deserved a spot on the team after all. But this was an opponent she had an advantage over, so the victory wasn't all that impressive. The question was what he would use next. Pupitar was a strong pokemon, but the weakness to fighting type moves was an unattractive prospect, not to mention that he still hadn't fully developed how he would use Pupitar's new body shape in battle effectively. Hitmonlee was also a powerful choice, but the odds of him listening long enough to actually do any good were slim. "Poliwhirl, your up. I expect another win quickly." As Brawly's second pokemon Meditite was sure to be tougher than Machop, so he was going to have to play things with a higher degree of observation. But his battle style would be a tad more direct this time around as Poliwhirl was sure to ignore anything to strategic anyway.

"And the second round of the Dewford gym Leader Brawly vs. the challenger Crenu is now under way. You may begin!"

"We'll start this battle off head on Meditite! Thunder Punch!" The very serious looking Meditite cocked his fist back as it began to surge with energy, the air around it starting to spark and crackle at the electric charge quickly built up and grew strong. Meditite launched himself forward an swung his fist at the blue swirly pokemon ready to shock it into oblivion with awesome might.

"Thunder Punch... Poliwhirl put up a wall with Ice Beam!" That was a very unexpected surprise from the blue humanoid pokemon with the pointy head. Poliwhirl knew the danger of the oncoming attack and went with the defensive command, though he himself didn't expect something that dangerous from the start. Blasting the beam of frigid energy into the sand in front of him Poliwhirl managed to make a little wall of ice just as the Meditite got in range and braced himself, though it was hastily thrown up and had no foundation in the loose sand. The electrified fist pounded into the make shift shield and shattered it to bits, but the attack was mostly deflected by the Oh what fun! "Heh heh heh, we'll have to watch out for this one."

"Don't let them rest Meditite, use Thunder Punch again!" Brawly called determined to win this round of the battle. He only had two pokemon left and he wasn't just going to hand over his Knuckle Badge easily. Meditite leaped right back into the fight, having just smashed apart the blue bouncy pokemon's wall and was already going into another savage attack. He had barely recovered his footing from the last attack when he launched himself at the Poliwhirl again with another surging fist determined to land this hit perfectly even if they hid behind another wall.

"Figured you'd go for that again. Brace yourself Poliwhirl, Ice Beam." Poliwhirl perked right up and started laughing at the command, perfect. It looked like he and his trainer were on the same page after all which made Poliwhirl hop with glee as he began gathering energy into one of his gloved hands. He stood firm in the sand and cocked his hand back and waited for the oncoming attack, not intending to dodge this time at all and loving it. Meditite got in close with its mighty leap and Poliwhirl tensed up as much as he could, shooting his hand out in front of him and using his superior reach to grasp the Meditite's head. The Thunder Punch connected and sent a violent shock through Poliwhirl's body that made him quiver on impact and loosen his grip, but at the same time he unleashed the brutal Ice Beam point blank on Meditite before the force of both attacks blew him back several feet. There was a small black mark on Poliwhirl's slimy skin roughly the diameter of Meditite's fist and his body twitched, Poliwhirl first tried to get right up but ended up having to roll over and push himself up with his hands. There was a numbing tingle going throughout his body and his stomach hurt like crazy, but he couldn't have been happier than he was at that moment. His trainer was one crazy guy, but that was definitely fun.

Meditite was blasted backwards into the air, a thin layer of ice encasing the majority of his upper body. When he hit the sand with a solid impact the ice shattered and Maditite bounced lightly and just laid in the sand for a few moments catching his breath. That was a savage attack, he could only hope that his own strike ended his opponents ability to go on. Staggering to his feet Meditite was annoyed to see the Poliwhirl standing as well and looking like he had actually enjoyed that collision. But then again, he had to admit he sort of did as well. Still, that was unexpected and powerful, Meditite was indeed hurt. "That was seriously harsh dude, you're pokemon are gonna get hurt like that someday. Meditite, take a second and use Bulk Up." Meditite was all set for a little breather and fortifying his stats was a good idea right now. The enemy was tricky, so he was going to have to overpower him with devastating force. Taking his meditative position Meditite closed his eyes and within seconds his body got pumped just as Machop's had.

What Kasiya had been expecting to happen next was that Allegra would happily take up position in front of her, and that Rosemary would tremble with fear and try to hide. Instead, the Bayleef trotted forward rather quickly, and though she looked apprehensive Kasiya could tell that she wanted to do some training. Allegra, on the other hand, simply stayed where she was (which at the moment happened to be perched happily atop a rock that had been warmed up by the morning sun) and eyed her trainer with a look that clearly said 'No, I don't want to!' But before Kasiya could react to her Pokemons' sudden attitude changes, she found herself being approached by a younger-looking trainer. She introduced herself and Kasiya did the same, also adding in a quick intro for Nova, who seemed quite happy to meet a new person. Noting Sam's adorable little Mudkip, Kasiya wanted to say something, but before she could, Oak had lead her away, presumably to show her the basics about battling with wild Pokemon. Kasiya watched them leave before turning back to her own Pokemon. By this point Allegra was nowhere to be seen, though the quite meowing that sounded like amused laughter turned her attention to a nearby tree, which after a closer look proved to be the Skitty's new hiding place. Kasiya smiled and shook her head. If Allie didn't want to battle, she wasn't going to force her. "Okay, just watch then, alright Allie?" she called up into the branches. Allie replied with a cute little meow.

"So much for that plan," she mumbled, looking back to Rosemary. The Bayleef was still waiting, though she seemed to be a little less shaken now. I really wanted Rosemary to get some training in too, she thought sulkily, looking at her other Pokemon. There was no way Seto or Casimir would help, as both of them were way too proud to resort to fighting a weaker Pokemon - teammate or not - and especially if they had to hold back. Kasiya frowned and looked around. Flash was still napping under the tree where Twilight was, and now Ariel had taken up residence in the area as well. She didn't trust Hiro or Fang for the job, but both for different reasons. Hiro was just so big and intimidating that poor Rosemary would probably faint due to fright; and Fang, well, she didn't think this was the right kind of job for the Crobat. It was then that Kasiya spotted a spiky rear end poking out from behind the same rock the Skitty had been sitting on earlier. Maybe Digger would be up for some training...? she thought. "Hey Digger, wanna train with Rosemary?"

The Sandslash's ears perked up almost instantly, which was quite surprising, seeing as he usually kept to himself and tried to pretend like he was alone in the world. He quickly jumped to his feet and turned to face his trainer before he nodded and scampered over to Rosemary was still waiting. "All right, you two, let's get started!" Kasiya was quick to forget all her troubles when it came to her Pokemon, and she eagerly let her mind focus on the task at hand, which was helping to make her Pokemon stronger and more confident in themselves.

Jaeshan watched with keen interest as the Pokemon called Ariados finished off the Machop with some sort of Electric-type attack. Jaeshan had missed the command itself so he had no idea what had been commanded, though he was impressed by the spider's agility and cunning. Next came a Meditite and the challenger switched out to yet another Pokemon Jaeshan had never seen before, so the blonde-haired boy flipped open his PokeDex once again to check out the strange, rubbery-looking Pokemon. "Poliwhirl, the Tadpole Pokemon," he read, "The spiral pattern on its stomach subtly undulates. Staring at it can cause drowsiness." Having been too busy reading he missed the first exchange of attacks between Crenu's Poliwhirl and Brawly's Meditite, but he looked up in time to witness the Thunderpunch and Ice Beam respectively. Jaeshan nodded, impressed by the power both Pokemon were displaying. He slipped the 'Dex back into his pocket and tapped Combusken's Pokeball. She appeared in a flash of light at his feet and looked around, not happy by the fact that she couldn't see anything.

"Busk? Ken?" she asked, pointing up at her trainer.

"Hmm?" Jaeshan looked down at the Pokemon curiously, wondering what she could want. Combusken shifted on her feet but continued to point up at Jaeshan. After a moment or so of thought, he realized what it was that she wanted and he quickly picked her up. Within seconds she'd scrambled up onto his shoulders, and now had a great view of the battle. Jaeshan couldn't help but notice that she seemed heavier than before, as well.

"Watch closely, Nova," Kasiya told the young Charmander as she scooped her up off the ground. The tiny fire lizard squirmed a bit before breaking free of her trainer's grip and she quickly scrambled up higher until she was happily perched atop Kasiya's head. The girl giggled and looked at her two Pokemon, deciding that she would give orders to Rosemary and let Digger fend for himself. Even though he was at a disadvantage against a Grass-type such as the Bayleef, the Sandslash had plenty more battle experience. "Digger, you go on the defensive, all right? I want you to avoid or block Rosemary's attacks." Digger nodded once and he flexed his arms and legs for a quick warm up, signaling that he was ready by leaving a deep gouge in the earth in front of him with his sharp claws. Kasiya took a deep breath and looked over at her Bayleef. "Alright Rosemary, start off strong! Give 'em your Razor Leaf!"

"Baay!" came the cry from the Leaf Pokemon. With a sharp turn of her body, the leaf atop her head was swung sharply in a horizontal motion, sending several smaller leaves soaring towards Digger. At first it looked like it would be a direct hit, but the Sandslash wasn't about to let that happen. The Ground-type took a defensive step back before he tucked his head down into his chest and let a volley of poisonous needles fly at the oncoming Razor Leaf. The attacks collided with the end result being the Poison Sting ripping the leaves to shreds and causing a cascade of purple and green sparkles to rain down around the Sandslash, making him stand out quite nicely.

Hey, that's kinda pretty, Kasiya thought, realizing now that Digger hadn't aimed the Poison Sting at Rosemary at all. She glanced at the Sandslash, quite impressed by his method of countering. Now that she wasn't focused on giving him commands, she could see that he was practically bursting at the seams with confidence. Even Rosemary seemed to be more into the battle than usual, and Kasiya couldn't help but wonder if it was just her over-analyzing the situation as good to make up for her own current state of mind.

Good answer? Keegan repeated mentally, not having fully expected to hear such a reply. In truth he'd expected for the old man to laugh or snicker or something like that. Feeling uneasy now the redhead turned away from the older man and crossed his arms over his chest. Why was the old guy still hanging around him, anyway? Keegan wasn't exactly teeming with friendliness or kindness, yet the geezer was still there. And furthermore, he hadn't said even a single word in response to Keegan's less-than-humble attitude towards him. What does this old fart want, anyway? he thought, the first few pangs of suspicion beginning to eat away at his insides. There ain't nothing special about me, why is he still hanging around? The questions tumbled around in his brain, though he could find no answers for them. The man continued to watch him, though by this point the casual observer would undoubtedly realized that he was merely just messing with the redhead in order to get a rise out of him.

"Fine, whatever, I don't care why he's here," Keegan grumbled, reaching into his pocket and forcibly withdrawing another cigarette. His hands were shaking a little as he attempted to light it - it seemed the numbness he'd been experiencing earlier was only temporary, and now he could feel the pain coursing through his body with every beat of his heart. Temporarily pocketing the lighter and tucking the cig behind his ear, Keegan pulled his heavy backpack from his shoulders and let it fall to the ground with a thud. He knelt down and zipped up one of the side pockets and he took out the bottle of ibuprofen he'd purchased the night before. He dumped a few pills into his still-trembling hands and downed them, followed by a large gulp of stale-tasting water from the bottle in his bag.

The old man had come closer again, and was looking like he was going to say something too, but he stopped as a rather large shadow passed over the ground beneath him. He stopped in his tracks, and looked up at Keegan with a half smirk. "Looks like we've got company," he said, pointing up at the sky when Keegan looked at him quizzically.

The redhead said nothing and turned his gaze skyward, though he didn't see anything at first. "What are you getting at, old man? I don't see anything." It was now that he lit his cigarette, though he could do nothing to mask the trembling of his hands. The shadow passed over the ground again, and this time Keegan saw it too. He very cautiously looked over as the creature that had cast the shadow came in for a landing. It was a rather large bird, though its steel body reflected the light of the morning sun. Now that he could see it properly, Keegan was certain that he knew what it was he was looking at. "Ah. So that's what you were getting at," he said with a light chuckle, bringing the cigarette to his lips.

"Hmm, can't say I've ever seen a Pokemon quite like that one," the old man said casually, as though the Pokemon wasn't even there. "And I've seen many a Pokemon in my day, too." The bird let out a metallic-sounding shriek and took a few steps forward, throwing a glance over its shoulder. Both Keegan and the old man noticed then that the steel-clad bird had a deep, distinctive scar that ran down the left side of its face. It looked as if the creature had narrowly avoided having its eye gouged out.

"I've battled this type of Pokemon before. It's a Skarmory," Keegan stated coolly, studying the Pokemon carefully. It almost seemed as though it hadn't realized it had landed in front of two humans. The Skarmory also looked to be somewhat tired, and judging by the paranoid way it kept looking behind it gave Keegan the impression that it had been running for something. What a stroke of luck! This Skarmory is easily big enough to fly with, and if it's already a bit worn out, it shouldn't be that difficult to capture! he thought excitedly, already snatching a Pokeball from his belt.

"Oh ho ho, are you going to catch it?" the man asked curiously, still wearing a genuine smile. "This ought to be a good one, best of luck to you, Sonny!" He backed off to give the boy and the Pokemon some room, and casually pulled a fairly full pack of cigarettes from his vest pocket and lit one up, leaning back against a tree to watch the scene unfold. Had Keegan seen him do this, the redhead probably would have blown a gasket upon the realization the old codger had his own supply of smokes to begin with, but fortunately for the golden-ager, the redhead was currently preoccupied with a large, metallic bird.

"Thanks, but there will be no luck involved," the redhead retorted, sending the Pokeball he'd chosen spiraling onto the field. Themis appeared with a flash of light, and only then did the Skarmory notice that he was being challenged. For a moment it looked like the bird would attack, but instead it flapped its wings and took to the skies, apparently ready to flee. "Oh no you don't," Keegan grumbled, looking to Themis. "Stop it with a Thunder Wave," he commanded. The Manectric nodded quickly and dashed forward, static rolling over his limber body before he sent a weak blanket of electricity in the retreating Skarmory's direction. Had the Armor Bird Pokemon not already been quite tired, he probably would have escaped the static with relative ease, but he felt a tingle strike his left foot, and soon it traveled up his leg and through his spine, paralyzing him almost instantly. The bird struggled but could not remain airborne, and with a heavy thud it smashed into the ground about thirty feet away.

"Ooh, nice shot, Sonny!" the codger commented, clapping a few times to show his appreciation. "Now's the time to go on the attack! Get 'em! Get 'em, m'boy!"

Keegan frowned and shot a glare at the elderly fellow. "Shut up, would you? I know what I'm doing!" Geez it's like he's never seen a Pokemon battle before. God. Trying not to think about the old geezer, Keegan turned his attention back to the Skarmory, who was slowly pulling itself to its feet. "Themis, Thunderbolt, go!" he shouted, trying to ignore the enthusiastic cheering he was receiving from the strange old man. The Manectric, as usual, had other ideas, and instead of listening to Keegan, he dashed forward, ripples of electricity coursing over his body as he gathered up power. "Or Spark, that works too," the redhead mumbled, running a hand through his messy hair. The electric type jumped at his foe, but the Spark attack never connected; instead the Skarmory had slashed at the air in front of it with its sharp, feathered wings, creating a sudden cutting gust of air that knocked the Manectric off course. The stored electricity dispersed when he hit the ground, but a deft roll put him back safely on his feet.

"That one there's got attitude problems," the old man chortled loudly, nodding towards Themis.

The Manectric, still recovering from the last failed attack, growled and shot an angry glare over in the man's direction, the momentary distraction allowing the Skarmory to effortlessly send a Swift attack at the electric type. It was a rather amusing sight to watch the silvery stars slam into Themis, one by one, though Keegan knew that each hit would only make the Manectric angrier. Sometimes I forget how much like me Themis is, Keegan thought, blinking a few times in surprise. But then again, it wasn't uncommon for a Pokemon to develop the same personality quirks as their trainer - after all, he saw it more than enough with her and that Raichu of hers. "Now give him a Thunderbolt, Themis!" Keegan commanded again.

Deciding that maybe it was a good idea to maybe listen to his trainer this time, Themis shook himself out a bit before he let a strong current of electricity flow through his body. With a roar, the Manectric loosed the bolt at his opponent, and watched smugly as he scored a direct hit. The Skarmory shrieked in agony and flailed around the best it could while suffering from paralysis, it's razor-sharp talons making deep gouges in the soft earth beneath it. Now's my chance, the redhead thought, quickly removing a spare Pokeball from one of the pockets of his backpack. Here goes nothing! He took several steps forward in order to close the distance between him and the Skarmory, and let the sphere fly.
