Some things upon first glance are little more than comedy, but upon analysis, you can discover deeper elements that cause it to fall under other categories.

The other day I was recollecting about something, and realized how horrid it actually was dispite making me laugh.

Then again, I am a tad desensitized to such things as violence.

An upbringing of anti-war Vietnam movies can do that to a person.

I am going to bring up the cliched case of society being what it is, with desensitization and what not.

But come one, look at it.

Key element: lighting. Horror films are dark. Perhaps the only difference here is that you can actually SEE what is happening. (I hate horror films that are so dark you can't see anythin...T.V shows have a bad habit of doing this too)

Freak out: The scary notion of aperson who is already dead reaching into people's bodies and sqeezing their hearts till they die. How do you kill sometihng that is already dead? How do you fidn what you cannot see? How can you run away from a killer whom you never saw or knew was comming?

Emotion: Dude is suspected of killing his wife. He didn't do it, but he's the only one that knows and believes that. After 5 years of being told that yeah, he did it, maybe he would really start to beleive that he did. Not only that, but all the people he comes in contact with are dropping to their graves. What will happen to the pretty girl he met who's husband had just died via mass murderer?

Motive: The killer doesn't descriminate. He just wants to kill you. The notion of not being able to run or hide is rather terrifying. (A key element in "war of the worlds as well)

The Messenger: the only one who knows the truth, no one will listen to. The town is against you.

The Judge: A phsyco who deals with the paranormal. He's an FBI agent, so he has information about you and your home that you may or may not be privy to. He's utterly convinced that Dude did it, even after his own death.

The afterlife: Whoa now, slow down. He doesn't just kill people, he destroyes souls too. (It is not confirmed that the soul is actually 'destroyed' until the very end of the film, thus it can be considered as a horror element)

Whoops, I didn't mean to type so much. Sorry.

okay, my rebuke.

why the Frighteners was not a horror movie:

the three main 'ghosts' including the husband who dies in the course of the movie, are pure comic relief.

there are only 2 people in the film that believe he did it, the curator ( I think) of the museum, and the fbi agent.

even in teh instances where they try to frighten teh audience with the Death ghost, the 'good' ghosts are there to make the near entire thing humorous.

the fbi agent is so obviously an out of wack parody/mockery of an 'occult special agent' type character as to be discounted even in hsi belief that he did kill his wife. (the overly jumpiness at any high sound, the 'iron breastplate' to stop telekenesis, ect.)

even when the characters are in danger from the real killer and his insane woman, this is played down by them debating the weapons to use to kill with.

as for the destroying souls thing. I never once though that it was destroying souls. at the time, when you are supposed to beleive it's Death, my first reaction to that was Death forcing the soul into the afterlife and to stop pestering him.

similar to being on bad terms with your boss, and instead of him firing you, he moves you to a different department to get you out of his hair.

the simply overexaggerated too much in the movie for me to find it the least bit frightening or 'horror' like.

Shrug, I was never really into dating, so I never really cared what people thought of me.

But, I did have/do have this problem where 10 year olds fall head over heels for me. Its kinda desterbing and wierd.

Jason: You told me about the movie, you didn't tell me about the elements.

Ghosts are rotting and are killed during the course of the film. Wheather you in no way thought the souls were being destroyed is irrelivent. The possibility lies in the act of crushing the soul found inside the ghost. The act implies destruction.

Everybody knows the comic reliefe is the first to go.

She's not the curator, she's head of the press. What the press says, the world believes. Face it, peaple are stupid. They believe what the news tells them.

Obviously out of wack, yes. But he is also in power. He's an FBI agent in a small town, whether or not he has the actual athority to boss people around, the smaller folk will listen to him simply by title. It's his insistance, his insanity, that makes him frightening. not only that, but this character causes key events to allow the audience to grow tense. Ah thats a good one, he causes tension.

Played down? no, it adds. I am about to be killed by a crazy person. They are so thrilled by this aspect that they are unsure of what to kill me with. In fact, each weapon they choose becomes more gruesome. I bilieve in the end they choose an ax, reminicent of "The Shining" and "heeeere's Jonny!"

In fact, the mass murder's name is Jonny.

We all know a girl in love is something to be feard. Patricia continues to love Jonny even after he is dead. She holds his ashes close to her, allows him to continue killing. She so loves the man, so loves the killing that she does with him, that she acts like a poor abused soul so that she will be pitied, and not suspected or seen as a threat.

Another point, look blue hair.

Ouch...that one needed hard core editing. Some of those sentences are STILL awful. (Silly me, not 'aweful' as I had first typed. It's not soemthing to be awed over)

*nundges with elbow* eh? eh? I'm good at arguing when I can write it down. Get me face to face and I'm awful at it.
