Miyuki didn't understand why her ada was so upset, it wasn't like she was alone and confronting Ioreth.
"Because the guard wanted us to tell him that it was her and not Iorlas. No one was going to believe Amalirahc."
She stressed this as if that was the stupidest thing in the world, of course why wouldn't anyone believe Amalirahc? Her friend might have attention problems but he wasn't stupid.
"And we needed the guard to believe Amalirahc because she shouldn't have been running around the castle. What if she hurt the King and Queen?"
Well she still didn't understand politics and she thought the big deal about her being a princess was kind of weird, Miyuki did understand that a King and Queen were important, and there was a reason for all the guards.
Lin was torn between pointing out that Miyuki was a little girl and shouldn't have been anywhere near Ioreth and that the guard should have known better than the depend on children, and the mere fact that she would have done the same at Miyuki's age.
"In hindsight," Senka pipped up in all seriousness which was strange for the little cat, "He should have not asked Furball and the brats to double check. The captain here has the same gift as the boy, and she knew the moment she came running in that something was wrong."
This wasn't just Senka's preference over females talking neither, the hindsight was something even she could see and it pissed her off. She was a cat! Cats should not have to think about these things, they should only need to think about food, sleep and the next time they'll be petted.
Even if Wish and Whisper would have disagreed with her on that one.

"The difference is," Earendil told Senka flatly, "the guard did not know the seriousness of the situation, and the children did."
He eyed Miyuki again, still angry but fully realizing that he couldn't keep on her case about it because it wouldn't help anything. Still, he did have to add, "Next time ... listen to Amalirahc. I know sometimes he can be quite a bigmouth and he doesn't always show how smart he is, but when someone is that insistent and that scared, listen to them."
He reached over and gathered Miyuki into his arms, holding her close. "I'm just glad you're all right."

Miyuki smiled up at him, "I'm glad too, and Lady Kirahn is going to be following us around so we'll be fine."
"Furball," Senka eyed the girl, "Aren't you forgetting something?"
"Like?"
"The part where Iorlas and Ioreth were originally dragons?"
"That's important?"
"In the grand scheme of things yes."

Earendil blinked. "Wait ... what?" He held Miyuki at arms' length and stared at her. "Miyuki, please explain what Senka is talking about."
Dragons? Were originally? What was that even supposed to mean?

"Well.... Iorlas and Ioreth were originally dragons, but Iorlas likes elves after one healed her even though she was a dragon, and Ioreth hates elves because elves killed dragons. Even though both Iorlas and Ioreth had killed elves during that war, you know the first one. Iorlas is sorry for that by the way, anyways it us to be that Iorlas and Ioreth were always fighting each other, even if they also always helped each other, until one day a lady elf offered to turn both Iorlas and Ioreth into elves. Well... she offered Iorlas because Ioreth would never agree, and besides Ioreth would have probably killed her."
She said this plainly and while she understood that was a bad thing, there was no simple way to put it so she just said it, because it was true.
"When they're elves they can't use their full magic and Ioreth can't hurt anyone as an elf," she paused and then amended, "Well.. you know, badly. Iorlas is the only one who can stop being an elf, Ioreth can't stop being an elf, though she can turn into a dragon for a few seconds every few days. Ioreth can only stop being an elf if Iorlas stops being an elf, that's why Ioreth does all those bad things, she's trying to make Iorlas turn back, but Iorlas says she would never do that not even if she dies."
Miyuki frowned at that.
"That's the really sad part though."

"Whoa, whoa, slow down," Earendil frowned. "One bit at a time. Iorlas and Ioreth were dragons ... during the first war? The Great War? The one when Melkor was creating his evil beings to destroy the elves?"
But didn't that mean that they were of Melkor's creation?

Miyuki nodded at this, "They weren't the exact first Iorlas said, but they were there."
Knowing this, she didn't think Iorlas was evil, because evil meant she wouldn't know good from bad.

Earendil's lips tightened slightly. He wasn't sure if Miyuki was aware of the implications of all of that, but he had a feeling they would get better information if they spoke to Iorlas directly.
"All right," he said slowly, "and moving forward ... now they're elves, Ioreth does not have the ability to change back on her own, but Iorlas does, and if Iorlas changes then Ioreth is free from the spell, or whatever it is, and so Ioreth is trying to force Iorlas to change, but Iorlas says that she would rather die?"
He looked to Lin to see if she could understand it all.

Lin hoped that Earendil wouldn't think too poorly of Iorlas. While she had seen magically first hand what sort of creatures were created by Melkor, knowing that was why she felt... oddly better about the woman all the same.
She tilted her head slightly to see what else Miyuki would say.
"Yes, because Iorlas says that Ioreth is too dangerous," Miyuki replied.

Earendil closed his eyes and took a slow breath. If that was Iorlas's opinion ...
"Lin," he said, speaking now in High Elven so that only Lin would understand him, "I think perhaps it would be expedient for us to speak directly with Iorlas ourselves, find out the details of what happened and what's going on and why. I want to know more about this before we leave the children alone with her again."

"Fair enough, I'd also like to know more before anyone else finds out and it gets out of hand," Lin added.
She closed her eyes and thought about it a bit more, yes, it was prudent that this not get out of hand at all. Lin understood Earendil's worry but...
"Who else knows about this story Miyuki?" Lin finally switched back to Common Elvish.
"River, Amalirahc, Lady Kirahn, the King and Queen...." she paused, "The guard... I think that's it? I don't remember."
Lin nodded again, "So there's more to the story than what you said... that being the case, you and Senka probably shouldn't mention this to anyone else. There's a lot of hard feelings about dragons, and for good reason, they're not the old wise ones from Gaia after all."
Which Lin suspected was why Miyuki didn't find anything wrong with this. Gaia could make anything seem good, even demons.

"We'll talk with Iorlas and see what she says about it, too," Earendil added. "But yes, unless she says otherwise, please don't talk about this. For her sake."
He didn't want to think what Aethos would say if he found out. His brother had been killed by a dragon after all, and his sister nearly so.
He looked over at Lin. "Nearly ready? We should try to be prepared when they come to get us for dinner."

She turned around a bit.
"Is there?"

Earendil smiled and slid off the bed, moving closer to check for her.
"Nothing ruffled," he affirmed. He put his hands on her waist and leaned down, kissing her on the cheek from behind. "You're beautiful, as always."

Lin couldn't help but chuckle as she reached up to kiss back, "Thank you love."
During all of this, Miyuki stared at her parents as if they were aliens from another planet. She wasn't quite sure why, but it was always weird when they got into one of those moods.
