As for the "He is going to get his dog."
"They are going to get their dog."
Is acceptable and used by some if they don't know the gender.
When talking about games and what not I always tend to say "We have to go meet up with them at this place for the quest" even if I know who I am playing with and the use of "them" is only referring to one person.
