I don't tap my foot, I bob my head slightly. I don't know if it's good or bad, but it isn't loud.

Wah? that's hilarious considering when I was a beginner our band director , (who was a fill in cause SOMEBODY niglected us, but was really the high school band director), told us "YOU BETTER ALWAYS BE TAPPING YOUR FOOT!". eek and most of the time I still do expecially during solos or ensembles.

I tap my foot for about the first ten measures or so. Then, for some odd reason, I don't need to count, and can tell when 4 measures have passed, without tapping or counting. x3 Internal Metranome!

I was always taught to start out tapping (like, when you've first started playing), and then as you get better to stop relying on your foot to keep tempo.

Tapping my foot, heel or hand helps me keep in tempo. It especially helps when I'm lost in a long song. sweatdrop

my friend logan taps his heel, it doesnt bother me except for when we practice for pregame, he looks so funny, just the way he looks and how he plays his baritone. XD I'm just watching this episode on TV where a guy got arrested for tapping his foot in a bathroom. XDDD

I don't think my band director cares. I will tap my foot as long as I can see the director when sight reading or practicing a tune that's hardly been worked on.
However, when you're in Jazz, it's usually best not to unless you have an insane amount of rests during the melody (agh, it happens when you play an "odd Jazz instrument"). You should learn to feel the form and listen to the rhythm section, especially the drummer and bass. He also worries about tapping your foot to the wrong tempo, which can totally screw you up.

I tap my foot for rehearsals, but not for performances. Our BD tells us to tap our feet because a lot of people have problems staying in tempo. He actually gets mad if we're just learning a new chart and people aren't tapping their feet.

For people first starting out, it really helps them find a steady beat and how they place their next note. But, the longer you play, the less you have to tap your foot because you learn to count in your head. Like myself, I've been playing an instrument for a good 2-3 years now, I don't need to tap my foot. But when I'm playing really complicated pieces, I start to tap my foot to help me find the beat. Professionals do it all the time.
And I don't know if you even understood a word I just said, but yeah. XD;

Not a chance! Your Music Teachers a moron. I don't care if they're a good teacher asides from that. They're a moron.
I tap my foot all the time. Though, technically it's when I'm NOT playing..... I don't need it when I play. I'm a human metronome! mrgreen

Tapping your foot is fun fun fun! In fact, we're so drilled to it in my band, we've had reports of randomly starting to tap our foots to music in time when out of class! ASTOUNDING!!! rofl
