"I don't know," she said, her voice strained. "I don't care. I told you, people leave me. I'm used to it."

She sucked in a breath and her eyes cracked open for a moment, glassily staring at the ground. "I'm- I'm afraid I'll say somethin' to piss you off real bad. I can deal with other people, but you..." She shook her head on his chest, which ended up just being an awkward cheek scrape. "I-I can't-"

"Hey." It sounded a lot like the one he'd said before nudging her to the bathroom earlier. His hand slid up her back, past some of her hair, and to the cheek she left exposed. "Don't lump me with 'people'," he said, pulling his head back down to look at her.

He paused and then continued, strangely quiet, "I know I don't have an...idyllic record with you." Broken plates and drunken one night stands and this is an open relationship. "But you said it yourself: we can both ******** up as many times as we want as long as we don't leave the other behind."

Chel nodded. There was a specific reason she had worded their arrangement as such. She was desperately dependent and needed constant reassurance due to the sheet number of people that had left her.

"Right, right. Sorry." One of her hands went to twine with Jack's, and she rested their hands on the back of her neck. "Can I ask y'somethin'?"

"Go ahead," he answered with a small yawn he couldn't hold back, curling his fingers around hers.

She let out a small noise of frustration and then in a whiny voice said, "Why d'you even like me?" Chel had never, maybe, made it apparent how little she considered of herself. She carried arrogance like a shield and most of the time it was true, but there were many times when it cracked and it crumbled into what was lying on Jack's chest right now. No person had absolute faith in themselves.

This was coupled with the absolute confidence that Jack must have been able to find someone better; smarter, prettier, stronger, safer; any number of variables in degrees higher than her. Jack was an absolute gift from the heavens to her, and to have to stand beside him got hard only when she allowed herself to feel inferior. The number of times people had left her (or conversely, she'd left them) had her absolute in her resolve that Jack would, despite his words, leave her.

In the end she always cut things short when they got too close because when she didn't, she became clingier than anything, and needed them so badly she couldn't function without it. She made the mistake once with Chris, and senior year had taught her to never do it again. But now here she was, doing it again.

The corner of her eyes started to tear up again, but not because of her or anything Jack was doing, but instead because of the partnered voice in her head who was now repeating, <******** ridiculous. I'm getting a headache just trying to wrap my mind around this.

He probably should have expected that question, but he hadn't. "I don't know, to be honest," he began after a moment. "I've asked myself that in the past, even before we were dating." With little success, he didn't have to add.

"I guess it's—There's this quality when we're together." Jack frowned a little as he tried to think of how to explain it. He had to think above the pain that came from her weight on his body and his arm merely existing. "Maybe no-one else sees it because all they know is the appearance. One opinionated, obnoxious idiot who can't type, and one generic smartass douchebag who's as self-centered as they can get. No-one understands how that would work even if they know us. But people other than Chris don't really know you, and people period don't really know me."

He shifted, pushed himself up with a wince because he was starting to slide down the pillow. "I don't know what that quality is. But I trust you, Chel. There's very few people I can honestly say that about." And the thing he couldn't convey in his exhaustion was how frightening it was to admit it, how much that security was necessary to him; he had no energy to do so tonight. "And I know you're more than what you present to people, just as you know I'm more than just a smooth ********," he added with a small, tired smile.

She listened quietly, somewhat disappointed, but not surprised that he couldn't pinpoint any traits or qualities above other ones. Partway through she offered, "I know you," but even that didn't cover him and they both knew that.

By the time he ended she had moved up further on his frame to put her nose under his chin, which was probably a large source of the pain. She eas surprisingly quiet for a while, the way she always was when Jack unloaded something on her. She offered her lips once or twice softly to the side of his face while she thought, small gestures of gratitude.

It was a quiet utterance that would stay in Greece and not be transferred outside to the real world. "I love you Jack Hawthorn," was her response, small and contemplative, more like a thought to herself than a gesture to him. She couldn't shake the feeling that despite all her fears in the admission, it didn't really matter anymore. He couldn't leave her for it and she could convey where she was at more adequately.

What quickly followed was, "Don't worry 'bout respondin'. I just need y'to know from my end." She hoped she didn't sound her usual casualness, because despite her necessity to maintain a lax nature at all times, she found she wanted this to hold even an iota of seriousness.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 12, 2015 6:18 pm

That iota was enough to stop him from rebuffing with a joke. (Are you sure? Did you hit your head?)

He didn't know what was more surprising: her admission, or the fact that in spite of her disclaimer he was already saying in the midst of it, "I love you, too." In defiance of her knee jerk to backpedal (always offering something and then a way out, always putting herself out there and never demanding the same respect in turn) and of his own inner censorship, and because hearing it made more sense than the unnecessarily convoluted mess he had tried to levee on her. (Annoyance. Acquaintance. Resourceful contact. Friend. Friend with benefits. Girlfriend.) "******** sake," he muttered to himself with a strange look, not aware he had spoken what was supposed to stay an inside thought.

He found himself growing inwardly tense immediately afterward. Jack Hawthorn wasn't supposed to blurt out s**t without careful thought to phrasing. It sounded so childish and thoughtless to him, even though in reality his gut told him those were the right words anyway. It wasn't possible to describe how he felt through more evasive lingo ("I have a deep fondness for you", "you mean a lot to me", "I care about you") because that was toeing the edge and watering it down, and hell but he couldn't half a** s**t anymore.

It wasn't a big show, the grand declaration led up to by a series of romantic misadventures: outside a car alarm went off and the rain made white noise and their bodies ached and bled and healed in a room he had no business booking. But he had. Look at what I can get us. Yes it's a convenient location, yes it's expensive as ********, but it's worth it for you. He'd put up plastic stars in her room in some misguided attempt to be meaningful. I can't give you the same sky back but I still remember it. They had a ******** silent language, god damn cues and nuances picked up from spending so much time together because—

"I'm a ******** idiot, and the quality is that I love you," he said just a little bit louder than previous muttering to be clear, because if they were going to walk into this ocean they might as well dive. The inward tension began to subside, and a new wave of tiredness replaced it. He was too drained for bullcrap to explain away what was already there and had been there for he didn't know how long. A part of Jack wish he hadn't said anything; loving someone was just another step past the warning sign he'd ignored in the tub the night before.

But he was only human.

He squeezed their hands and tightened his arm around her in lieu of something more active, watching her but not demanding her to look up. It was enough to get used to the old, immature thrill of confession thrumming in his chest. One that he knew meant something this time, even if the norm dictated one shouldn't say love after only a month. (Bad ideas, you don't know what love is, it's way too early. Did you hit your head are you sure.) Hunters didn't fit inside the norm anyway, least of all them in particular.

She had heard him the first time, and by the time the second time came around she had already returned his embrace. When did they ever do anything cautiously; life with Jack had always meant diving straight in, headfirst and submerged.

"Tch," she murmured, "You always one up me." She hadn't realized how harsh it would wreck the inside of her ribs to feel something so strongly and to not deny it for once. Chel lied to herself and built easily destroyed walls, but Jack was the first person to ever kick them in without remorse.

More importantly, he wasn't perturbed by what was behind the walls.

She was strangely relaxed afterward, running a finger along his collarbone. It always seemed to work this way; such high tension stakes, such childish confessions, always stoked from her pain, too. It did nothing to alleviate her mental state, but it did take one thing off her list and it left her tired enough to put the matter to rest. Even now she could hear Tenebrae stirring her thoughts and rearranging them incorrectly; you picked the wrong person to love. She wasn't sure if he was talking to her or Jack.

Also as usual, nothing was really resolved. "I wanna sleep," she said abruptly, tiredness finally finding a place in her bones. It was also a shorthand way of saying that she didn't want to talk about why she had been crying anymore. Her eyes were too sore and her chest wasn't capable of such a battleground anymore. "Then I want victory sex and I mean we ********' wreck this place arm or not." She looked up to him for approval. "I wanna steal everything in this room, then I wanna go home and see yer new coat." A reasonable list of things to do. "Somewhere in there I'll prolly vomit from bein' so madly in love with my boyfriend." Sarcasm was starting to leak back into her speech, which was probably a good sign.

Some tiny piece of him absolved still of emotion was aware they'd veered too far off the original path of the conversation; the rest floated in a mix of exhaustion and satisfaction, too sleepy to bother to point it out. Why bother anyway when he could just nudge their joined hands under her head and kiss her slow? He couldn't begin to think it'd help the noise in her head, but Jack still pulled away feeling victorious, grinning lazily at her ideas.

"Sounds good, babe," he replied simply before going in for a second one.

She sounded a disgusted noise at the nickname, but it bled into his lips and became a purr of satisfaction. Fingers twisted into his hair and demanded more of him. Jack's lips had always tasted of excitement and of lust, but now there was an added degree of love and something higher she could name.

Home.

Eventually she rolled off of him, knowing that she'd been agitating a wound for a good while now. She couldn't stand the thought of not being connected in some way and it made her hands greedily grab for his before reaching up to adjust her pillow so she could lay beside him evenly. "I don't wanna go back now." Her thumb idly stroked his hand and she looked at him. "Let's move our dragon castle to Greece."
PostPosted: Sun Apr 12, 2015 11:41 pm

He turned his head and coughed as she rolled away, sucking in the air he couldn't get before, and then he turned his head back to her as Chel laid back down; trying to turn his whole body right now seemed like a bad idea.

"Genius. The civilians won't notice a thing," Jack said, his sarcasm slowly returning as well. With his glasses askew but with no free hand to remove them, he probably looked even more comical as the lenses seemed to hover over his face rather than be worn. "We'll fill it with hotel brand s**t, booze, and kitschy souvenirs."

Chel covered her mouth with her free hand, hiding a laugh. "As long as you're there lambchop." Jack had an inexplicable ability to make her laugh, even when she'd been sobbing not an hour ago. Undoubtedly as the night went on and she was left alone with her thoughts she would crutch on him further, but for now she let him make her smile and considered that enough.

"Need help buddy?" she asked, referring to his glasses.

Jack groaned softly into the pillow at the pet name. "Yeah," he replied, "right on top of the trash pile. Take these damn things away from me, please. ******** everything else, once we get back my first order of business is getting contacts. I'm not dealing with this bullshit on missions."

And of course getting that bracelet off her wrist would happen before that, but he had long assumed it as at the top of his list.

Chel laughed a tired, muffled version of her orange laugh for him. The glasses were removed in kind, set on the table beside her before she returned and adjusted his hair. "You look good either way. Glasses get in the way sometimes," she assured him, "But I gotta admit I'm a little attached."

She kissed him shortly, a fleeting action. "'Fore we forget the sappy crap, thanks for bringin' me." Had she had a vast lexicon she could have detailed how much she loved the short reprieve, getting to play couple, getting to vanquish enemies, getting to taste luxury, getting to grow closer to someone she held so dearly; all of it. Having no words for it, she only said, "It's been awesome."
