Heidi's smile fell into a frown again. Her shoulders sagged, her hand tightening around his and then going slack in his hand; she didn't let go, but her grasp was looser. What was she doing wrong? Usually when he started to get melancholy she was able to cheer him right up..

"Okay, sure," she answered quietly, turning her eyes down to the ground and falling quiet beside him. Heidi soon nudged him with her hip, peeking up at him through blonde hangs. "Love you~."

The premise of the mission was grim, but he supposed that was the point. Kostya approached a chain, and before getting to work, he pulled his scarf over his mouth. The last thing he wanted to do was get infected. With gloved hands, he removed the first chain, closing his eyes in irritation as blood spattered across his face.

Giving Konstantin a searching look, America nodded. He seemed fine for now, and she'd know better than and faster than anyone else if that changed. Handling one set of chains, the girl tightened her grip at the snap and rebalanced her footing. "He's seizing!" She called out, "Buckle down!"

Hoodrat was busy.

And by that, he was elbowing Abbi in the side, grimacing.

"Well," he said, "rgoup projects are ******** awful for the reasons you said, but I guess it's a good thing we talked a ******** about zombies in Chicago. Jesus."

Theirs looked particularly snappy.

He saw you there in the distance, Nora. He didn't like you much at all. But Abbi was excited to see her-- and even made up a team name that had Leslie groaning.

"You bitches decide who's navigating," Leslie said, waving his hand, "I'm gonna get these chains off."

finn + ripley + hanna

Ripley was given a nod as he joined up, though this late in the game it probably meant he'd be the last. He didn't need to peek over Finn's shoudler to guess he had invited Fini along. Where had that girl went off to anyway?

Ah well. Zombies were the priority.

It was a definite sign of wrongness that the giant didn't chime in with some sarcastic remark of his own. Everyone had their own flavor to contribute anyway, what was the point? It'd be unoriginal. So Jack remained quiet and simply carried on with the work as they went along, hitting the button to start the countdown once their patient had been seemingly secured.

"Well," he said in a somewhat dull voice, breaking his silence, "I feel a smoke break coming on after this. Don't know about you all." In spite of his traumatic mission, he...almost wished something would go wrong now. Trouble always meant more action, more to focus on, more stimulation. So far, not even girlfriends, fake or otherwise, had provided him with the same thrill.

He almost, almost wished Chel was there, if only to have someone actually physically annoy him.

Kostya had the right idea. Peyton tugged her scarf up to cover nose and mouth and moved in to the other side to get to work on one of the remaining chains. America released one, Kon another, and then she heard a third snap that made her stomach drop unpleasantly, but she kept her attention on her work. Even after the body started to buck and writhe.

Body. Not person. Couldn't think of it as a person, or she wouldn't be able to do her job.

The chain gave, Peyton's hands on it tightened, and her blood ran cold as a broken voice wheezed out one word, over and over. She shuddered, stepping back as she adjusted her grip on the chain to wrap it around one delicate looking wrist. "Got it this one."

Hands working quickly, America was careful to avoid the patient's foamy spittle as he convulsed under her hands. As soon as the chain was loose she was stepping back, jaw tight and chains firmly in hand. Catching Noah's eye, she gave a nod, "We're ready whenever they give the all clear."

The subject was secure between the taut sets of chains, looking much more like a prisoner, someone dangerous on their way down death row, than any sort of patient. America wondered, briefly, if this was how the Russian mission could have ended for her. Bound and led, an unsavory task for some randoms responding to a mission text. Unrecognizable as a hunter.

Cell 3

Sometime during Caelius' usual demeaning diatribe against all the trainees and somewhere between the first "pathetic" and the second "capable," Gale had reached silently for Stormy's hand, gentle and loose in his ministrations as he wrapped his fingers around hers. He couldn't begin to say how grateful he was that she was back safely - but whether she was back wholly was an entirely different story altogether.

Evan's apparent induction into their group made Gale a little uneasy, his nerves already on edge; less because he didn't trust Evan and more because Evan didn't - and had never - trusted him, in spite of the fact that Gale and Stormy had been together for over a year now. Perhaps it was because of this lack of respect towards him, but hearing Evan order him what to do made his irritation rise, Gale pressing his lips together.

<< Now is not the time. >> Jinhai murmured softly.

Gale said nothing, the weariness already beginning to settle in, the frayed edges of his nerves making him on edge. He shifted his gaze from Evan and cast a glance at Stormy instead, before saying quietly, "I'll watch and back up if needed. You two go ahead and try and get the chains loose."

"Oi!" She slapped Leslie's head in passing. "I'm keeping a running tally of the curses you use, mate. Each one earns your face a dunk in some soapy water--and don't think I wouldn't keep my word."

With a startling shift, she smiled sweetly at Abbi. "Be a dear and be the navigator, eh? I've got experience handling less than cooperative persons."

Case in point: the patient started lunging at her and snarling, Tutting, Nora unwound the second set of chains, trying not to show how unnerved she really was about this whole zombie business. Not in front of the children.

"Okay," she said simply and got to work.

She was still shaking a little from the encounter. The patient? That thing snarled and snapped and foamed, but it was nothing compared to what she had felt when she snagged Evan and left without a word: that thing's noises couldn't compare to Tuck's chilly silence.

(But she had to admit, it was nice to vent, even if it was through petty action.)

Not a thing, Stormy reminded herself, a twinge of emotion crossing her face. Still a person. A patient.

Yeah, and it could easily be one of us if we're not careful.

It won't happen.

Why? Because
you're protecting them? Even her own inner voice couldn't help but be wry. What happened to the last ones you promised again?

Don't think about it. Focus. Her fingers shook.

She knew she was doing wrong by everyone: bad enough to ignore Tuck and Heidi, but pulling Gale and Evan together into an enclosed room after months of Evan's threats to push him away? This was how she'd let them meet at last? The atmosphere was thick enough to cut a knife through, and she recognized the effort it took Gale to agree to the Sun's plan. But maybe by the end of it, she'd have not just Tuck mad at her but everyone else too. Maybe they ought to be. God, they should be.

"I'm sorry," she mumbled to no-one in particular, barely audible over the patient's ravings. Her stoic expression cracked and revealed signs of strain. "I'm so sorry."

Gale's unrequested opinion and subsequent sacrifice of Stormy was met with a glare of disapproval. Can't follow orders. Willing to throw Stormy to the zombie wolves to save his own skin. If Evan hadn't liked the idea of Gale being an important part of Stormy's life before, he liked the reality of him even less.

His distraction almost cost him: his divided attention gave the chain he undid just enough slack for the patient to snarl and lunge at him, its teeth clicking open and closed on empty air so fast they were almost chattering. With a muffled curse, he pulled the chain taut again.

"It's not your fault," he told Stormy gruffly, his eyes fixed on the patient just in case it started to get loose again. He had no idea what she was apologizing for but he was eager, as always, to absolve her of her perceived wrongdoing.

Nora + Leslie
(chains 2/4)

All the elbowing, while appreciated in some form because it was a decided distraction from what they were being lead into, still only made the teen all the more squirmy. Both feet had begun to tap against the floor so that she looked a little bouncy, her pigtails waving from side to side with her frantic motions.
"We didn't really talk about zombies in Chicago... It was more like... Like zombie babies. Zombie babies are so so, one-thousand-percent different!" A squeaky, nervous laugh peeled from her throat. "I bet zombie babies are um... OK No. You know what? I'm not even going to say that out loud. All zombies are terrible." Why did pop culture have a fascination with zombies? There were totally the worst!
A little noise of surprise left the girl when she saw Nora give Leslie such a sharp tap, but Abbi only grinned up at the women when she saw what was being offered to her.
"Uh yeah! Navigator! I can do that! Just call me um Navi!" Feet tapped her hastily to the side of the door they'd been assigned. "Hey, listen! Hey, listen! Just uh... Um practicing. That's um--" A hand wiggled through the air in a shaky way. "That's a video game joke. Just uh... Ignore that." No body on Deus knew video games, sad trombone.

But the girl was prepared to be as helpful as possible, quick to open the door for the group although she was the last to enter.
"Yeesh, you guys are... Mega brave for um... Getting so close! Plus EX-P for everyone!"

Maybe she should just stick to yelling 'Hey! Listen!'.

gale + evan
(chains 4/4)

She didn't miss the glare her brother sent and gave him a long one herself. Stop it.

Evan made her feel worse just leaping to the better conclusion. She was starting to look miserable now, and as if on cue the patient began to foam at the mouth and thrash. It sounded like a great idea honestly.

"It is this time," Stormy mumbled as she worked at the last set of chains. "I'm not, I...I've failed. I've failed all've you." Emotionally, physically, fundamentally, probably literally as a human being even. She couldn't talk about it now and it would have killed her had the base's extreme chill not settled her into a comfortably numb state. Instead it was just this distant, dull rock lodged in her chest, which was somehow as bad as the usual razor sharp cuts if not worse: a constant lump she had to keep breathing and swallowing down.

But at least she didn't have to be acutely aware of the things crawling under her skin.

"But I won't here," she promised, her gaze finally meeting Evan's before finding Gale's. "I won't. I can't." The soft noise that left her could have been a chuckle once. "I'm already near the bottom, so I'd have to really..." <******** things up. Which she was already paving the way for with Tuck.

And yet she couldn't' see herself feeling very sorry about that particular instance. Things weren't sunshine and rainbows, whatever she did or said.

Grasping two links in her arms, she nodded to Gale. "We're ready to move on, Galestorm." A nickname, a weak attempt to try and keep herself up. "Lead the way."

Cell 3 / Room C
(Gale, Stormy, Evan)

[The glare was not missed by Gale either, who studiously ignored it because Evan's heady disapproval of him was nothing new; and right now there was little Gale could do to sway that, even if he had cared enough to try.

(He did care, because Stormy cared, because she loved Evan, and because Gale wanted her happy and wanted there not to be tension between them, two of her most important people; but clearly Evan was the one who didn't care enough to even make the effort to get to know him, to learn that Gale had spent the past six months doing anything and everything he could to support Stormy; and if he said it didn't hurt that Evan was just going to make snap judgments and assume he wasn't right for Stormy without bothering to learn otherwise, then he'd be lying to both himself and to them, though he'd never admit it.)

Stormy's quiet apology was met with a look from Gale, though he said nothing, merely gave her a small, encouraging nod. The chains clinked and slithered across the ground, falling free, and Gale reached towards them, dragging them out of the way. A sharp pain had begun in the center of his chest and was spreading outwards; he could almost see her beginning to break again, and there was a tightness in his throat that had nothing to do with the task at hand.

"You haven't failed me," said Gale quietly, and he steadied the patient as it lumbered towards him. He could have said more, but what could he say that hadn't already been said? Would she withdraw away from him this time, as she had last time, determined to do everything on her own? It wasn't about him, but it wasn't just about her, either.

The nickname brought some sense of relief, and the flicker of a smile passed briefly across Gale's face before it disappeared again. The patient had stopped thrashing, and was now standing, swaying slightly, between all three of them, looking somewhat docile and vague.

"This way."
