Slowly, Vyntyr began to understand how the lock was operated. It was an internal puzzle, carved from stone. She would need to carefully manipulate the mechanism to swing the latch and open the chest. She took a deep breath and sat, closing her eyes and focusing on what she had seen of the internal mechanism, sliding each piece slowly and delicately. She didn't want to damage the chest and risk permanently locking it. As small as the chest was, it didn't look too easy to break into, and anyway that would risk damaging the contents. She wondered what could be inside.

She heard a faint click as the mechanism moved into position, and the lid of the chest very slightly raised, showing that it must be unlocked. Vyntyr licked her lips as she stood, watching the chest almost nervously. What would be inside? The curiosity was mounting, and she had to take a deep breath, her heart pounding. What was so important that the Force drove her to this place? What could she have found that was so strongly meant for her that she was compelled to come to this place, and so special that it had to be hidden away from the world inside a triple-locked vault? She slowly reached out with her free hand and lifted the lid. Keeping her senses open to the Force to be aware of any danger.

As Vyntyr opened the chest's lid, she heard another faint click and a quiet grating as a mechanism was activated. The lid swung slowly back as a small pedestal rose out of the depths of the chest, and there, on top of the small platform, was a beautiful, green crystal that reflected the light from her lightsaber marvelously. She gasped as she saw it and just looked at it for a moment before reaching out and grasping it delicately between two fingers. As she lifted it, she felt a quiet sort of calm emanating from the crystal. It was an incredible find. She couldn't imagine what made this crystal so valuable that it needed to be protected so closely, but whatever it was, she would value this treasure forever. A gift from the Force, truly. Since she was more or less done here, she gave the cave a quick once-over looking for any further secrets and then left, returning back to the temple the same way that she'd come.

It was too late to get any more work done, and Vyntyr, while excited, was somewhat exhausted from the day she'd had. She figured she could fudge her studies for just one day in light of what she'd uncovered, and settled on meditating shortly and focusing her energies to stave off the pain that had begun to creep into her body as the day progressed. She bathed to wash off the grit and grime of the forest, and sat down at her desk, examining the little crystal carefully. It seemed like an ordinary, if lustrous, crystal. But if it were hidden away like that, it had to be special to someone. She resolved to find out tomorrow and laid down to sleep, the little crystal on her desk.

Vyntyr awoke the next morning and focused on her healing for a bit. Her body was positively screaming from the activity of the day before, and she had to focus for a little bit before she was able to get out of bed. But she was excited. The very first thing she did was inspect the crystal again to see if she might gather any more secrets from it, but she had no such luck. She went about her alchaka and morning routine quickly, though, and meditated for a short time before grabbing the crystal, wrapping it in cloth and tucking it into a pouch in her belt. She was almost running down the hall as she moved toward the library, hoping that she'd be able to find something that could help her out there.

Vyntyr was in the library. It was always a little intimidating how ridiculously big the library in the academy was. But, in a way, it was comforting. It was comforting that the Order valued knowledge enough that very few secrets were kept. That so much knowledge was free to those who wished to learn was a great gift. The Sith Empire valued and even prized their secrets, hoarding them for personal gain, but the Jedi welcomed the sharing of knowledge and the sharing of secrets, that the entire Order might grow for the experience of every individual therein. Vyntyr had little idea where to start.

Vyntyr decided that the best place to start was with a librarian. They generally had a pretty good handle on these types of thing. Vyntyr quickly located one of the workers tending to the library and ran her down, asking her if there was any information on crystals in the library.

The librarian chuckled. "Oh there is all kinds of literature on crystals here, dear. Is there anything in particular that you're looking for? Curious about your first lightsaber, perhaps?"

Vyntyr smiled and shook her head. "Well, I actually found... Something. And I really want to know more about it. Maybe you could help me?" Vyntyr looked around to make sure no one was watching --she wasn't sure why-- and reached into her pouch.

Vyntyr produced the crystal and the librarian gasped softly

"Oh, my! That is absolutely beautiful! Where did you find that, if I might ask?" The woman leaned in closer to admire the gem.

"Well, I was out roaming the Forest, and... Well, I guess I heard it... Calling to me."

The librarian looked impressed. "Oh my. Well that is certainly impressive. I'm afraid the information we have here may not be enough to help you, though. You'd need to know the composition of the crystal before we could tell you anything about it."

Vyntyr frowned, wrapping the crystal back up and placing it back into her belt. "Where would I be able to find that out?"

The woman tapped her chin softly, thinking.

The woman raised her finger. "Aha! I know just the place. Let me make a quick call to find out if he is in today." The librarian produced a holocomm and quickly scanned through her list of contacts to find a particular name. When she'd selected it, the call began to go through. A hologram of a man's face appeared above the comm. "Hello, old friend. I believe I've got something that you'll be interested in. We need your expertise in figuring out the composition of a peculiar crystal. Do you have time to see a youngling for an inspection of the gem?"

The man pushed up his glasses. "Kara! How lovely to see you again. Long time, no see! A crystal, you say? Surely it's not an Adegan crystal, or you wouldn't need my help. Where does it come from?"

"Well, that's just the thing, she isn't sure. She says she found it in the forest, and doesn't know anything else about it. I told her that if anybody could tell her, it would be you."

"Well, I thank you for the high praise, good madam. Sure. I can take a look at it. Just be sure to tell her to get down here before the end of the day, I'm afraid you've caught me preparing for an expedition into a new ruin on the other side of the planet."

"I'll be sure to let her know. Thank you, old friend. She'll be down there shortly."

"Alright, young lady. You're looking for a man named Kono Arbalek. He's going to be over on the other side of the academy. I'm sure any passing protocol droid would be happy to give you directions, but you're going to want to start by going down this hallway here and turning right, follow it all the way down and you'll be near his office."

Vyntyr nodded. "Thank you, ma'am. You've helped a lot." Vyntyr bowed and turned to go down the hallway, following it until she got to the other side of the academy and flagged down a droid for directions to Master Arbalek's lab. She continued walking --almost running, really-- until she got to the door marked with his name, and knocked on the open door frame.

Vyntyr looked into what was clearly a lab of some sort, filled with machines of all varieties and packed with boxes and datapads all over the place. It was a little cluttered, to be honest. But it was definitely a lab, and apparently that was what Vyntyr needed. "Um.. Hello?"

A head appeared from under a desk, glasses askew as he and a little probe droid spun around to look at the newcomer. "Oh! Hello! I'm sorry! I didn't see you there. You must be the one Kara was talking about. You've found some sort of gemstone, I hear.

"Uh, yes. I mean, I guess so. I found it in a cave in the Forest. It looked like someone had hidden it there. I was just curious about it, I've never seen anything like it before, except for the displays of various crystals in the library."

The man smiled. "Well, that's what I'm here for. Let's see it, then, and we will see what we can't figure out." The man held out his hand.

Vyntyr reached into her belt pouch and produced the gem, holding it out on the cloth that she'd wrapped it in.

The man took it and held it up to the light. "Oh, yes. Certainly not an Adegan crystal. The shape doesn't fit mephite or pontite, the structure..." He flipped down a small magnifying glass that was attached to his glasses and held the stone close to his face. "The structure is quite peculiar. Here." He spun and placed the gem on a table, pulling out a cloth and wiping it down before placing it on a small pedestal underneath a powerful scope.

An image of the crystal appeared on a holoprojector, and Master Arbalek zoomed in on it. "See here, how the crystal structure is broken? It's a very peculiar flaw. This gem almost seems like it was broken and somehow pieced back together. It's a very rare condition, but such things have been known to happen from time to time. All things are possible through the Force. Now, if we take it over to this machine here, we can identify its composition." The man lifted the gem carefully and placed it into a metal box that flashed a bright light and pulled up some data on a screen nearby. "Ah, yes. This is a familiar composition to me. This gem is native to Tython. Rare, yes, but definitely formed on this planet."

Master Arbalek pulled the crystal out of the chamber and held it up to the light again. "You are very lucky to have found something like this. Not only is this crystal very rare, even here on its home planet, but finding one with this particular irregularity. Such deformations are prized by collectors as valuable idiosyncrasies. Would you like to see a magic trick?"

Vyntyr was caught off guard. So the crystal was valuable. That didn't matter. She wasn't going to sell it. She was rather happy to have found it at all. But what was this about a magic trick? "Um... Sure?"
