The blue leopard scowled at Hel after the male made his crude threat. Landwalkers were all the same! The lion who had first caught and then released Ngedere and the green lioness were better than the rest, but he still didn't trust them as readily as he would a fellow treewalker. He slunk over to the skull, wanting to stay close to old Ngedere. The sooner the group returned to the trees the better.

Ndege wagged her tail with relief and nuzzled Lani, relieved to see the other dog once again. Being around so many felines was making her uncomfortable and the skull of the baby elephant made her feel unbearably sad. To lose a little one... she could well understand the monster's rage, especially if it was the father.

"We should stick together," she agreed, smiling at the jackal.

Bluu thought Spaki's plan made a great deal of sense. "We are a diverse group and we should use that to our advantage," she said. "Why don't the leopards stick to the trees? Then they will be positioned above the elephant and can attack from above if need be."

Veru took in the forest around them, quietly considering how far they'd been walking. One advantage of being a foreigner- the sentinels had gotten pretty good at telling just how far they'd traveled from the base. Still, it was a wood and unfamiliar terrain. "Well, we're at least a good distance from where we started. The ground has been sloped too. I doubt an elephant would have taken that path."

An wasn't sure where they were at, but she had witnessed the original attack scene. "It was definitely a lot flatter. The bodies were taken pretty far from where they were attacked." She supposed that was one mystery solved. An elephant would have no problem transporting its kills. "We also have to consider that it may follow its targets into the wood, not the other way around."

The elephant graveyard was a smart idea, but the white lion had to wonder if this was a beast beyond any sort of consolation. "If he or she buried the child here, it might not care to go see the others."

An jumped off the tree she had been using as a pedestal. "Lets move further north, following the flattest parts of the land we can. We might be able to track damage to the foliage better if we start from this spot."

Starting with this post, I will be rolling 1-20. If we reach 18 or above, we will be out of time for any sort of planning.

Margulis nodded in agreement before she moved to follow An. Whatever they were in for they would have to be well prepared. She was not a proficient fighter, but she knew some cruel tricks if need be. Despite everything she still hoped it wouldn't be needed. It was looking more and more unlikely that they would be able to negotiate with this creature, especially if An was right and it was following its targets. That took planning, not simply blind rage. As she walked she scanned the treeline for any plants that might be of use to them. Her knowledge of medicine was limited, but she knew well enough what would slow bleeding and dull the pain. She swallowed hard as she pulled a few flowers with her teeth, hoping they wouldn't need it.

"Might I make a suggestion?" The red leopardess rose her voice. "Us leopards might be able to provide more assistance if we return to the trees--Rather, we'll be able to provide warnings if we spot an elephant from above." In all honesty she was quite content travelling on foot. Only, she would feel a little more secure if she could see which direction her enemy was coming from. Even the land-walkers would probabley feel more safe if they had scouts helping them.

Pam felt a little more at ease now that they had an inkling of a plan even though he still didn't know exactly what to do if an elephant actually appeared before him. Running sounded pretty good right now...

"North it is, then." Pam watched the large cream-colored lioness jump off the tree, slowly making his way to follow. A group needed a leader and so far there were only a few individuals that had stood out as such. Pam was young and inexperienced - and very much aware of it. He would not be ashamed to admit that he could use some guidance in this complicated situation.

"We have strenght in numbers. But an elephant..." Wild dogs were able to take down much larger prey using specific strategies. Perhaps they could do the same if the elephant couldn't reasoned with. "Maybe we could attack its legs from behind? Bleed it out?"

[I AM A NEWBIE]

Mtalia had stayed quiet, but followed along, perching on the thickest of tree branches above the group. It was a little difficult, but she was getting along. Generally speaking, the Lammergeier did not appreciate taking part in something like this, but she had been bored and was actually getting... lazy recently as a result. Having seen the party forming drove her to join in, though she had held her tongue more as an observer until now.

"I am not exactly a good messenger perhaps," she offered, "But I would be able to run messages if need be." She thought her reasoning would be enough just by the sight of her- a Lammergeier was a huge bird, and not exactly discrete. However... In a situation like this with carcasses about, she supposed it would not be unusual for one of her kind to be flying in the area, so she had offered it up anyway.

Shari was certainly intrigued by the turn of events. Their monster was an elephant. She didn't doubt it would take everyone to take the elephant down once they found it. She agreed with An on moving north and staying on flat terrain. When the leopard spoke of going to the tree's to keep a better look out Shari nodded. "I like your idea there leopardess. With eyes in the trees we will have advanced warning if we are coming up on the elephant." This was the second thing she had said to any of the other members of the group.

Shebh considered everything that he had seen mostly in silence, not confident enough to be sure that he could add anything useful to the goings-on. He wasn't sure if he wanted to mess around with an elephant, especially when they could do so much damage from their size alone. But he wasn't a coward. He wouldn't turn tail and run as soon as things went downhill.

Unless that was what everyone else was doing. Safety in numbers, and all of that.

"I also agree with the leopardess," he spoke finally, feeling as if he needed to give some support to the others, and to remind them that he was still there.

Then he peered up at the bird, who seemed to have chosen the same moment to break her silence. "I'm sure your help would be useful. Your wings can carry you faster than anyone can run."

Sandor had helped to unearth the baby pachyderm's skeleton. He had not been particularly dismayed to recognize the skull and bones for what they were. They'd known they were pursuing something large, and in this terrain there weren't too many things large enough to be worth worrying about. A part of his mind had probably considered the possibility of elephants, though never communicated the thought to his consciousness, and that might be why he was not panicking like that moronic canine or simpering like some of the females.

"Hunt smart," he muttered. "Who needs to fight an elephant. We can dig a pit and herd the thing in once we find it. Even if it's not killed by the fall, it'll still be stuck. Elephants can't jump."

If no one listened to him, he didn't care. He also wasn't concerned with finding the elephant. Finding elephants was never hard. They were enormous, and this one wasn't even completely sane, it appeared.Finding the elephant he would leave to someone else. He still planned to be the one to kill it though.

Baatar nodded. "North seems to be the best decision, I doubt any elephant would manage to trek up anything that sloped." From what he knew about the creatures they were pretty much useless on rocky terrain, there was a myth circulating that they couldn't jump, but as he had never witnessed this, he did not bring it up for fear of sounding stupid. His eyes trekked the path before his feet began to move, but eventually he took a deep breath and made to follow An. He was almost certainly leading himself into certain danger, but there was a certain other feeling about this situation, pride? No, maybe it was courage.

The leopard's suggestion seemed like a good one. A bird on their side wouldn't hurt either. "Alright, stick to the air. Hopefully we'll see the monster long before it comes near us. Since we'll be moving ahead, focus on that direction," An said. "Everyone else, lets stick together. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious."

As they started to walk, her eyes fell on the tiny skeleton. It was hard to push sympathy from her mind. Luckily, the firekin in her managed to swallow it down, at least for the moment. "Ngdere, are you going to come with us?"

The monkey mumbled another incoherent chant. He seemed reluctant to move. But perhaps not to act: before the green lioness left, he pressed one of his red hands to the Margulis's side. It seemed the marks were more of a protective ward than they were a dark omen.

"Alright, lets move out," Veru called, jerking his head.

It was immediately clear the path the elephant had taken. Small saplings were snapped, either from his girth or from grazing. The trail was drier here than the upland, and Veru was glad to bid the mist goodbye.

As they moved, the group tossed about ideas.

"Ah! As much as I'd love to dig another hole, I doubt it would be so easy to trap one within it," Veru mused in his usual half singsong voice. "I can't say I know these brutes personally, but they're hardly herd-beast. Knew a hyena once that swore they were the smartest things out there. Unless he's in a rage, or we have hours to prepare, we're probably not going to catch him unaware."

As they walked, the trees began to grow thinner. But not because the forest was ending- after a few good minutes of walking, the group found themselves facing a small pool of water. A small break in the wood, possibly a source of water for many of the Greenwood's residents. Veru took this moment to walk to the shore and rub the red paint off his face. Hopefully there was no real magic involved in Ngdere's protective marks.

"Maybe he took water here," An said, her eyes looking out across the oddly still black water. "Lets look around for any sign."

Mud... Ah, wonderful mud! Moshi sank his paws into it... And remembered why he was enjoying being AWAY from it, as nice as it smelled. He scowled, ears folding back. Disgusting... Regardless, he'd committed himself to this, beginning to look around for a path of some sort. He didn't care how comical he looked, raising his paws up rather high with each step. If it was mud he could sink into, he didn't want to have to spend the next several days washing it out of his body fur.

Mtalia nodded as she responded from the trees, "Sounds good." She stretched her wings somewhat before finally jumping from her hefty branch and taking to the air. She was quite grateful for the air currents today- they were perfect conditions for hovering in midair on their drafts. If she had needed to fly, she would have to circle over the group- she would fear that that would give them away.

She looked down at the ground, eyes scanning constantly for any sign of a trail as those bound to the earth moved slower below her. She kept her wingbeats as quiet as possible, and even tried to distance herself a little from the group, for fear of seeming tied to them. Should someone undesirable see her...

Mura listened carefully to the monkey, though she was unable to understand anything it said. She was sure that he had some sort of hint that he wanted to share with them. She thought that if she paid enough attention to him she would figure out what he was trying to say.

Her paws got pulled down by the mud. It gave her an unpleasant feeling. She felt like she was being wadded down. Despite this she stayed focused. She had come too far to let a little mud get into her way!

Ed'garde returned to the trees, moving gracefully and silently from branch to brach. The landwalkers were easy enough to keep up with.

Ndege was overjoyed to see the water and eagerly set about removing the red paint from her face. The mud was smelly too, true, but at least it would fall off when it was dry. And all she wanted was her face to be clean enough for her to smell again.
