Selphie adjusted her position standing up. It wasn’t very comfortable standing for long periods of time, but someone needed to be watch in case a Pokémon appeared and Selphie decided that since it was their first time doing this strategy, she would be the one to show them how to capture Pokémon, although Chad would probably jump to his feet quicker that Selphie could even realize the Pokémon was there. He seemed really fit and muscular, definitely someone that wouldn’t be fun to face off against in a survival contest. Selphie didn’t know much about survival in all reality though, only what she’d picked up on being a trainer. “Having a crush on a ghost gym-leader? That’s definitely a recipe for disaster. There was a ghost gym-leader that I had met in the Johto region and he was cute as well, but he was just too weird for me to get past. He acted like he was so in touch with the environment or something and tried to be the hero of the village. I’m all for a man acting chivalrous, but he was just taking it to the extremes.” Selphie shrugged and stabbed the ground with her foot over and over as she thought about what to say next. “Oh, Chad, I’ve never actually met a baker, so it’s kind of cool that you know a thing or two about them. The closest I got to a bakery was the window, and that was to only watch them bake for a second while I fed my Quilava that I used to have.” Selphie sighed as she thought about her former team. She missed them a lot, but she was also travelling alone too when she went through the Johto and Kanto region, and truthfully, she liked being with others more than she did being alone. “I wonder how Naano and Becca are doing.”

Kadaj turned his gaze away from Chad as Chad laughed, because he had a feeling that Chad was laughing at him for not understanding everything that went into the PC business, but then again, it’s not like Chad knew much about it himself, so he really didn’t have a leg to stand on when it came to laughing at him. “Eh, whatever dude. I’d like to see you explain that to me then. Yeah, not so funny now.” Kadaj snickered at Chad before reeling it back in to the topic at hand, which was that Chad’ mother was a baker. Although, Kadaj didn’t know anything about baking or bakeries so he kept his reply simple. “Cool, oh and by the way, my story was totally awesome. I don’t know how you could say it wasn’t the most exciting when it clearly was- mainly because I was in the story.” Kadaj stood up, deciding that he was a bit annoyed.
He walked around in circles for a moment and decided to address Selphie who was talking about what she thought of their stories. Kadaj didn’t even know there were other gym leaders out there besides the ones in the Coria Region because he never got the opportunity to learn these things. Now could be a good time to get started though. “Alright so Selphie, you should tell us about your past now. I mean, you did say that we needed to talk about ours. I think it would only be fair.” Kadaj knew that she was travelling through the Johto and Kanto region, but other than that, he didn’t know much else about her. Besides the fact that she had a Quilava from the small story she’d given them. It seemed a bit too irrelevant though. Kadaj couldn’t see how she remembered small things like that.

Chad shook his head and felt a sweat drop slide down the back of his neck as he watched Kadaj stand up and walk around. It was clear that Chad’s laughing wasn’t the nicest thing he could be doing, and he noticed that he was starting to come out of his shell with the help of Selphie. “Okay, sorry Kadaj. That wasn’t cool. Also, you’re right, I don’t know anything about the PC either.” Chad scratched the back of his head, wiping off the lone sweat as he did so. He didn’t like making Kadaj irritated and truthfully, he was kind of the one who provoked that. At least he was trying to make things right, that was always good. “Naano and Becca?” Chad looked at Selphie, slightly confused for a moment before remembering who they were, “Oh, I know Becca was upset because her Pokémon Servine seemed to be giving her the cold shoulder, so I didn’t really get to meet her, I met the depressed form of Becca.” Chad shrugged and then went on, “I think Naano is going to take care of her. Although I don’t really know what’s going to become of the two.” Chad fidgeted for a moment, wanting to get up and stand next to Kadaj, but doing that would really be obvious for his neediness to be around him, so instead, Chad stared at Selphie, hoping that she would somehow bestow the strength needed to resist getting up.
Chad really didn’t like how much he was coming to rely upon Selphie. It was almost like if she left, he would totally be at a loss and go back to those short sentences and introverted personality. He really didn’t want that, so he needed to make sure that he did everything that he could to keep her interested in travelling with them. “So you guys, any ideas of what’s going on with Torben and Myridia?” There was no way Selphie could know who they were, so Chad was more so directing the question at Kadaj.

As Kadaj asked Selphie about her own past, she folded her arms and tried to recall a story as trivial as theirs. She memorized pretty much everything that had happened to her on her journey, so she was just trying to pick something appropriate for the topic at hand. “Well, I learned how to battle from a gym leader in olivine city. Her name was Jasmine and she used steel-type Pokémon. She was like an idol of mine growing up.” Selphie unfolded her arms and placed both of them on her hips as she continued her story that could possibly end up getting long, but it’s not like they were waiting for anything besides Pokémon to show up. “Jasmine treated me like a younger sister and when I reached the age of ten, she gave me my first Pokémon which was a Magnemite. I didn’t fight her first though, she was the sixth gym I ever took on. I managed to beat her Magneton with the Magnemite that she had given me. Of course, my Magnemite had evolved into Magneton as well by the time I reached her gym. When I beat it, she knew that I was destined for greater things, like maybe a championship title.” Selphie shook her head, “I know that fame isn’t what I wanted. I lived for the experience which is why I moved on to the Kanto region whenever I was finished with Johto. Now I’m here.” Selphie left out the fact that she had made it to the top four in the Kanto league, a great feat that had her signing many autographs. The last thing she wanted was people to know that she was famous. “I’m sorry Chad, I don’t know who Tobren and Myridia are.” Selphie was kind of hoping that Kadaj would be able to answer that one since he seemed to be the guy that had more in common in terms of people, with Chad.

Kadaj nodded to Chad as though to accept his apology. He wasn’t all too mad about it, he just stood up because he wanted to stretch a little, although Chad thinking he was angry seemed to be playing in his favor. “It’s okay dude, I’m not even worried about it.” Kadaj turned to the berries and stretched a little. “I think looking for Pokémon could probably work better than actually waitin’ here for something to pop up.” Kadaj folded his arms and walked over to Selphie as she told her story. It was pretty interesting listening to the tales of someone who’d been through it all and knew what was to come. At least that way, Kadaj would have some kind of premonition about what was going to happen and how he was going to deal with it just based off of what Selphie said. “Wow girl, that’s awesome. I wish I’d done all that. I know y’all would love to hear about my experiences in the orphanage,” Kadaj said sarcastically.
The funniest thing he could think of about being in an orphanage was that people who went there always seemed to be cold-hearted when they got out, but for what reason? There was nothing that bad about being in an orphanage, if anything, you learn the true meaning of sharing and self-sacrifice. Kadaj didn’t want to think about it took much though because there was still a lot of skeletons in his closet that he didn’t want to be forced to think about. “I don’t know what they’re up to dude, I think Tobren said something about going to Paysage town and that’s the last I remember.” Kadaj had never really talked to Myridia, so the only things he knew about her was what Tobren had told them in Willowcove Village. “It seems like so long ago we were there huh dude?” Kadaj turned to Selphie and nodded, “What kind of trainer is Jasmine?”

If there was one thing Chad didn’t like, it was that he had to wait for Pokémon to come to him, although he already said he’d try Selphie’s method, so he kept his mouth shut about that topic and instead, turned his attention to Kadaj’s thoughts about where Tobren and Myridia were. It did seem plausible that Kadaj, Selphie, and he were the only ones still in town. “We should probably head straight to Paysage once we’re done capturing a Pokémon.” Chad thought about it for a moment and decided that was the best plan of action. He really wanted to get a Pokémon though just in case they were going to have trouble getting one later down the road. At least he knew that the two Pokémon he had with him right now would be able to help him in the first gym. Maybe he really didn’t even need a Pokémon?
Chad shook his head no because he’d already made it this long to get a Pokémon, he could wait a little bit longer if he needed to. “I’ve heard of Jasmine before. She uses a Steelix as her signature Pokémon, it’s pretty susceptible to fighting type Pokémon.” Chad smiled because really proud of himself for knowing the answer to that. “So if you were trained by Jasmine, I take it you know a lot about steel types since she was a Steel type gym leader?” It would make sense and if so, that would just add to all the reasons they would need Selphie to come with them. Not to mention she was really awesome at telling stories and things of the sort because of all that she’s been through. “Okay, it’s settled, one of us is going to be the champion, and once that happens, the other two should give full support? I wouldn’t have any hard feelings if either of you became champion.” Chad laughed at himself, already talking about the future like it was set in stone.

Selphie shook her head, wanting more than anything to defend her reasoning for sitting here versus walking through the bushes looking for Pokémon. “You guys got lucky last time. Most good-natured Pokémon are ones comfortable enough to come up to a trainer and eat berries from them. If you force a Pokémon from its environment, it could grow bitter.” Selphie thought of a practical way of explaining what was going on. “You see, Pokémon that come to the trainer and eat from them have already established an invisible bond that basically lets the trainer know it’s okay to capture the Pokémon. It’s something that my teacher Jasmine taught me when I was first starting out. She gave my starter Pokémon to me too because I had already built a bond with it before I was even a trainer, so when we started off together, we easily swept through most of the competition for a beginner trainer.”
Selphie turned her attention to Kadaj, eager to get to know more about him. “I’d love to know more about the orphanage. From what I’ve been able to pick up on, they don’t teach you much about Pokémon correct? So what did the orphanage actually teach you in terms of life itself? Surely they didn’t just let you sit around all day as a child?” Selphie smiled nervously, but still had the concept in her mind that they did exactly that.
She turned to Chad, deciding to answer his question as well. It seemed like she was the center of attention today. “Jasmie was a steel-type trainer and you’re right, she did use Steelix a lot. I was able to learn most about steel type Pokémon. If I had to fight in a battle, I’d prefer using a steel-type over any other because I’m the most well-taught in that field, but I’ve always had an interest for flying type Pokémon. Pretty much anything with wings fascinates me like Kadaj’s Pokémon Pepper.”

Kadaj had never heard of a Steelix before. It only made him that much more curious to find out more about it, although it would probably have to wait until later. “So that’s cool dude.” Kadaj was facing Selphie to let her know that he was talking to her. “Being in an orphanage isn’t so bad. I mean, it’s not like everyone makes it out to seem. When you grow up and that’s all you know, it’s not so hard. For me though, I know what it was like to have a family and all that jazz, so it was a hard cross-over.” Kadaj walked around a little, closer to the berries. As he did so, he saw the bushes rustling a little, probably because a Pokémon was contemplating whether it should come out or not. “Yo’ Chad, you should come catch this Pokémon. There’s something in the bushes, I can’t really say what it is though.”
Kadaj took several steps away from the bushes and turned back to Selphie before answering her question. “Well, I learned a lot about math and things of the sort for people who don’t want to be trainers. The instructors even forbade Pokémon from being a topic of discussion. So I’m basically set up to be an accountant or something, but I always knew that I was going to be a trainer, even if it took me all my life.” Kadaj smiled, slightly proud of himself for getting on the road he wanted to be on. “Have you always known you wanted to be a trainer or was it something you were forced to do? To be honest, you seem like you’d be a better Pokémon Instructor, telling people how to raise them… a breeder!” Kadaj couldn’t think of the word until the last moment. After saying it though, he turned to Chad to see how he’d handle the Pokémon in the bushes.

It was interesting that Selphie had actually been more interested in different kinds of Pokémon, but you could never know what kind of things people liked until they actually told you. Selphie was a fine example of that. “Oh, I guess that makes sense.” Chad stood up and walked over to the bushes as Kadaj mentioned something. Since Chad was the only one interested in getting another Pokémon, he wanted to make sure that this Pokémon wouldn’t run away.
Carefully, Chad approached the bushes and surely enough; he could see a Pokémon rustling inside. “Go Nincada, use scratch on the bushes.” Chad pulled a pokeball from his pocket and released Nincada from inside and almost as though it were on cue, it scratched at the bushes causing a Mankey to jump with an angry expression. “Mankey is a fighting type! Okay, Nincada use Fury Swipes!” Nincada jumped at the Mankey and began to scratch it over and over causing it to fall over. The Mankey quickly got up though and launched an attack of its own, a low kick!
The attack hardly did anything to Nincada though since it was already so small. If anything, Chad saw this as an opportunity to counter-attack. “Nincada, use Dig!” Nincada quickly dug underground, causing the Mankey to ground slightly confused. It was clear that the Mankey wasn’t used to fighting Pokémon that could dig underground.
After a moment of digging, Nincada emerged from directly below Mankey, causing the Pokémon to fall over onto its back. “Now finish this up with another Fury Swipes!” Nincada lunged itself at Mankey and scratched it over and over before Chad turned to Selphie, his friend. “Alright, I’m throwing a Pokeball now!”
He then turned back to the battle and pulled a Pokeball from his bag before tossing it at the Mankey in the hopes of capturing it.

Selphie smiled as Chad battled with the Mankey, but she was sure that Chad could handle it, so she focused on her conversation with Kadaj. “No, my mother was strict about me becoming a trainer. I didn’t question it because I didn’t care what I did with Pokémon, so long as I was able to be around them in my field. Being a breeder would’ve been nice, but like I said, I didn’t study to become one, I only know what I do about Pokémon from travelling as a trainer. You’ll pick up a few things as you progress as well.”
Selphie turned to look at Chad again, but something seemed off. The bushes were still rustling. “Kadaj, the bushes- There’s still another Pokémon in them. Apparently the Mankey didn’t come alone.” Selphie walked around the battle and waited until the Mankey was caught before she pulled back the bushes, and surely enough, what was welcoming her was a Poison Jab to her side. She was barely able to dodge the poisonous punch as a Pokémon called Croagunk jumped at her again. Luckily, her Pidgey was bit of a hard-head and emerged from its Pokeball before Selphie even asked it to come out. “Pidgey, we need to stop this Croagunk! Kadaj, there’s still another Pokémon in the bushes, you can either catch it or dismiss it, but I think I’m going to get myself this feisty Croagunk.” The Croagunk turned its attention to the Pidgey that was now taunting it.
The Croagunk opened its mouth and launched a spray of poisonous needles at the Pidgey. “Pidgey, use gust!” Pidgey began flapping its wings, causing the winds to pick up and the Croagunk to get blown back by the winds as well as the poisonous needles that would’ve hit Pidgey if not for the wind. Croagunk countered by jumping high in the air, ready to strike down Pidgey with a Karate Chop. “Quickly, dodge it and then counter with a Wing Attack!” Since Pidgey could fly, it definitely had the advantage while in the air. Croagunk’s big mistake was using a Karate Chop in the air since it wouldn’t be able to defend itself against Pidgey.
Just as commanded, Pidgey perfectly executed a dodge before coming up behind Croagunk and hitting it with a powerful Wing Attack, causing it to come crashing back down to the ground. Once it hit the ground, Selphie tossed a Pokeball at the Pokémon in the hopes of capturing it.

Selphie watched as the Pokémon broke out of the Pokeball, causing her to blush a little. “Oh erm, I guess I underestimated. T-That happens from time to time.” Selphie knew that Croagunk was going to be stronger than the Mankey that Chad had caught, mainly because it had no problem attacking Selphie before she even had a Pokémon on the field, but now it was time to give it a beat that it wouldn’t forget. “Okay Pidgey, looks like it wants seconds. Give it an Air Slash!” Pidgey nodded and flapped its wings quickly, causing a powerful gust of wind in the shape of a blade to come forth and strike the Croagunk.
Croagunk struck a tree behind it but quickly got to its feet. After getting up, the Croagunk dived at Pidgey with another Poison Jab. “Use Featherdance!” Pidgey began to shed feathers all over Croagunk as it lunged at Pidgey, causing the wild Pokémon’s physical attack to lower sharply.
When the Poison Jab did connect with Pidgey, the damage was noticeable but Pidgey was still able to counter. “Now use Wing Attack as a counter!” Pidgey struck Croagunk with its wings as the wild Croagunk was still regaining its balance, causing it to fall over again. “Okay, let’s see if it works this time!” Selphie pulled a pokeball from her pocket and tossed it at the Croagunk.

Kadaj cheered for the two as they battled the two fighting type Pokémon. Those would be good against the first gym leader. It was kind of weird thought that the Pokémon were waiting inside of a bush though. “There’s another Pokémon in there?” Kadaj heard Selphie mention that there was still one more, although he really didn’t need a fighting type Pokémon for the first gym leader because Torchic could potentially evolve and be useful there. Kadaj walked up to the bush anyways to make sure that the Pokémon inside didn’t try and ambush Chad or Selphie.
As he looked inside, he saw a weakened Deerling lying on the ground. “W-What? This Deerling is hurt!” Kadaj took his bag off of his back and pulled out a potion from it before spraying the Deerling who was shaking rather violently because of its fear for the situation. “I’m not gonna’ hurt you dude.”
After letting the potion take effect, the Deerling stood up and bowed to Kadaj, probably because he was thankful for Kadaj helping him. Then almost as though it wanted to fight, the Deerling began hitting its hoof against the ground. “Alright, you want to battle little dude? We can do that.” The Deerling neighed happily before watching Kadaj and seeing what he would do next.
Kadaj released his Torchic who quickly got into a battle stance, but Deerling was the first to attack. It began to run at Torchic, but quickly fell over, almost as though it were still hurt. “Um, okay? Use ember Torchic!” Torchic launched several fire-balls at the struggling Deerling, causing it to yelp in pain.
It staggered back to its feet though and struck Torchic with a tackle attack. It didn’t seem to do much though, maybe because the Pokémon was still weak from whatever happened to Deerling before Kadaj found it. “Finish it with flamethrower!” Torchic nodded and released a flame from its mouth that engulfed the Deerling, causing it to fall over. “Now go Pokeball!” Kadaj tossed a Poke-ball at the Deerling in the hopes of catching it.
