Yin soon found himself on a team. The team without Alexander. He looked about to see Justin, and mentally just...decided to stick fairly close to him. Enough to ask him what he was supposed to be doing and when. So long as they just pointed him in the right direction he would probably be okay. Avoiding zombies? This would almost be like training. It was like training, and he was trying to get into that mindset. He looked over to where Alexander was. No, this was not like training. This was a competition. He grinned at him, something that was possibly a bit more feral than friendly. Nothing like some good manly competition.
Something was happening between Alexander's father and Justin's father, and his team suddenly seemed to be in good spirits. "We got the ball first," Justin said, seeming to think that that was a good thing.
"Oh? Where should I be?" the mantodae questioned, noticing that other seemed to be splitting up in to some formation.

Alex was looking at Yin when the other boil gave him a terrifying smile. It was not exactly friendly...it looked more...like the other boil was ready to crush Alex into the ground.
Good thing Alex wouldn't be anywhere near him all game!
Ah, well, Alex's dad lost the coin toss. Oh well, time to line up with the rest of the defensive horde and get ready to pummel or be pummeled. Alex's one advantage was that he was at least tall...his disadvantage being he was not very sturdy or balanced.
They played the downs again and again, the other team slowly gaining ground. Alex spend half of his time eating dirt or the other half grappling with the zombie across from him in a battle to drag the other to the ground. He didn't even have a chance to see what was happening until each down came to it's conclusion.
Eventually, the other team was forced to kick for a field goal or risk not getting any points at all.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"We have to huddle up, Yin, then they'll let you know what you need to do. We do this before each play because they'll change strategies each time. Mostly you'll just be running towards that goal post there." The zomboil pointed, "And if you're open, with nobody around to tackle you, the ball might get thrown your way, so you have to keep an eye out and try to catch it. If it hit's the ground, the play is done, and we don't gain any yards. If you catch it and get tackled, we get to move up to where you hit the ground. But if you catch it and get tackled DO NOT LET GO OF THE BALL. If you do, it's called a fumble, and the other team can take it. Make sense?"
Justin just gave Yin the most basic run down of what needed to be done that he could. When it came time to line up, he showed Yin where to stand and when he would know it was time to run, if he hadn't already been paying attention. He would do this until Yin caught on to what was happening.

Run, try to catch the ball. Run, try to catch the ball.
Simple enough, and it would have been nice...if they had ever thrown him the ball. It seemed as though the zombie that was throwing the ball was not certain about him, especially when he realized that Yin was almost clueless. So Yin watched. And he learned. And he was ready to be thrown the ball.
And then they kicked it. He watched it sail through the "goal," slightly confused. But the zombies seemed pleased, though not excited, and then he was being told that the other team had the ball, and he looked to Justin for new directions.

Justin just looked at Yin like...seriously?... then said "Now we sit down until we have the ball again. Oh look it's Alex! Good job sucking at bruteball, Alex!" Justin taunted as he walked by, chuckling to himself.
Alex didn't give a s**t, because he was trying to comb all of the dirt out of his hair with his fingers at the moment. He did stop to shoot his cousin a glare, but then his face broke out into a grin. This was just a game, after all, and it was all in good fun.
He sat back to watch their offense take the field, confident that if they could just get the ball to his dad they would have an easy touchdown.
Unfortunately, it just never happened. And as usual, they had tried so hard just to get the ball to him that they ran out of downs before they were even close enough to get the ball close enough to even attempt a field goal. They even lost yards, for jacks sake! This is why Alex needed to be QB. They all sucked at strategy thing and were too predictable.

What Justin said to Alexander was not acceptable, and the tiniest bit of anger flared in Yin before he heard the chuckle. Wait, he knew what this was. Taunting during a match was really not that unusual, it had happened often enough at the Clan during sparring matches and competitions, and Alexander did not seem perturbed. So he went to sit down and watch the game, able to learn more being at the sidelines than when he was on the field, now that he could step back and watch it play out.
It appeared as though the other team had been unable to score, and his team's spirits were rising as they retook the field. He had to focus now, and he resumed his spot and glanced at Justin to make sure that he was supposed to be here and did not need to move.

With a heavy sigh, Alex pushed himself to his feet. Was his headache coming back? He rubbed at his temples as he shambled into position, crouched down and ready to get pushed around some more.
Just like the first time they were on the field, the other team slowly progressed. This wasn't due to any fault of Alex's. He played a superb game of getting thrown into the dirt repeatedly.
And then the other team got another field goal. Was Alex surprised? Not particularly. He scanned the crowd for Yin, wondering if he could at least go and sit with the other team until he had to go on the field again. ----------------------------------------------
Justin let Yin know that yes, he would be doing the same thing again. He assured the weremantis that this time, they would throw the ball his direction at some point for sure, so just keep an eye out for it.

Surprisingly enough they did throw the ball at him. Yin had made it past the first line of defenders, saw the ball spiraling his way, and could also see a zombie out of the corner of his eye.
If he caught it they could gain "yards" (which were apparently meters). But the zombie was closing in fast. He had to jump but reach the ball, large hands closing around it as someone rammed into him, pushing him into the dirt. But he held onto the ball.
Sadly as he had not been able to run with the ball they were forced to kick it again, but it seemed that at least they were doing better than the other team.

Alex didn't exactly go and sit with the other team, but he sat at the edge of his team, as close to Yin as he could get without looking like a turncoat. "Nice catch you made out there." He said to the weremantis, giving him a smile before turning back to watch the game taking place in front of him.
It was awful. They were still doing the same thing over and over again. Maybe his dad would reconsider who to be team leader next time. This was just plain sad. No points again, and the other team was leading 6-0

Alexander had managed to move so that he was fairly near Yin, which may have been what the mantodae had done by moving to the edge. He shook his head ruefully. "I was unable to do anything other than catch it, and it was a good throw." He looked the zomboil over as he watched the game. "It is good to see you enjoying a physical sport," he told them when the zombies began reshuffling and he moved to retake his spot on the field.

Did Alex enjoy being repeatedly slammed into the dirt by one of his brutish cousins? Not really, though there was the occasional feeling of satisfaction when he got the better of the other zombie and managed to force him into the ground instead with a snarl of triumph and an almost evil glint in his eyes. Maybe Alex's energies were renewed by Yin saying something nice to him before this round of play. He managed to knock his opponent down more often then Alex was knocked down himself.
And the other team hadn't scored any points at all.
BONUS!

Though Yin managed to catch the ball once more they had been forced to back up multiple times due to the good offense. Perhaps it had been a bad idea to say something nice to the other side. Alexander was the enemy after all. At least this time.
So this time the team trudged back to wait on the sidelines, though he did go to the edge of the group again. Just in case Alexander meandered his way to this end as well.

This offense.
It was terrible
So terrible Alex stopped watching and almost rage quit the game.
Except Alex never raged about anything, unless it was his friend not meeting him in the library. Then s**t got real.

Yin was trying really, really hard not to laugh.
But he might have been smirking.
Alexander's team was...not going to score if it kept on like this.
He was remarkably okay with that.

That last round of play had just been far too discouraging. Alex's heart just wasn't in the game anymore (if it ever had been to begin with) and as a result, he got battered quite brutally by his cousin who was playing opposite him. After one particularly remorseless drive into his belly that sent him sprawling on the ground, his cousin stood up and held out a hand to Alex to help him up as well.
"Ya ain't given up already, are ya, Alex?" His cousin drawled, as he pulled Alex to his feet. Alex just dusted himself off, gave a small smile and a shake of his head.
"Nah I'm just resting up for next round. Prepare to be destroyed." He laughed, because it was probably the most funny untruth ever told, and he moved to the sidelines as the other team was forced to kick another field goal.
At least they hadn't gotten a touchdown yet, right? Things could definitely be worse

Yin was getting slightly frustrated. He had managed to catch the ball once but again had no room to run with it. Then it had been thrown toward him again but the pass was wide, and there was no possible way he could have gotten to it in time.
Still, his team was winning by a decent amount by the time they left the feel, and he actually got clapped on the back a time or two for his efforts.
