My rabbi's oppinion is that its like they are trying to copy from the non jewish and "hevel" (non-tora-ish) culture. He says that by bringing it into us we are only mixing into the culture, and the tora has stated clearly NOT to immitate the other nations, otherwise we will be punished.

But hey, no-one said THEY invented rock wink . Maybe the levi'im at the beis hamikdash (holy temple) sang rock songs? ;D.

(note- this is a joke, obviously smile ... It it stated clearly in the talmud what instruments they used wink ).

i can see that.

but, rock isn't attributed to any religion, and there's a point where being overly machmer is stupid. when was the last time you turned down a birthday gift?

Well, rock is many time accosiated with screaming people and people all standing and shouting at rock concerts... thats what gave him that picture. The thing is, not all rock is like that, but yea.. I must admit some rock songs do give me that picture in my head sweatdrop .

Actually, it isn't only stupid to be over mahmir, it's a sin. Thats one of the ideas discussed about the nazir, why did he have to bring a korban hatat after the 30+ days? Rashi says it was because he sinned by depriving himself smile . Soooo... I shall not deprive myself from my beautiful music 3nodding .

Wow... I would like to point out that I have decided that there are some serious gaps in my Jewish education. I could barely follow that, and parts of it I had no idea what you two were talking about.
God. Over eight years of Jewish Day School education, and they taught me absolutely nothing useful.
Welcome to the guild though, Nathan! And trust me, your taste in music doesn't go as far as mine- I'll listen to anything people play for me except for, like, Christian music. And most country scares me. But other than that, just about anything, and I mean anything.

Yeah... I lived in Israel for a couple years, and I could also barely follow it.

But, as for music, I took an Israeli folk dancing class at my school in Israel (Conservative in religion) and we did the Locomotion and the Macarena. Along with a BUNCH of Israeli songs, new and old.

Thank you for the welcome 3nodding !

I personally like "Yehei Smei Rabba" smile . It's my most totally-loved-and-need-to-hear-all-the-time song smile .

I like all music apart for this western kind of music that reminds me of cowboy days (country?). My sister likes it... and it scares the living daylights out of me. I don't like rap either.. I probably would like it if it was a jewish rap and had some sense to the words hes saying, hehe... (basically, I don't like most rap because of the pointlessness to the songs or their constant swearing... the idea of quick talk and rhyming words only appeals to me if there is actually a meaning behind the quick succesive string of words the rap lyrics provide).

How do you guys listen to music? Near your computer, with a CD player, with an MP3 player, With a stereo, with an Ipod? biggrin .

I don't like most American rap, but rap in a foreign language is a lot of fun. I listen to Israeli rap all the time, it's great. I don't have a clue what they're saying most of the time, but it's so fun!
I listen to my music... Well, in the car, first of all. Either the local rock station (DC 101!) or a CD. At home, I'll turn on the radio in my room on my clock, or listen to my iPod Shuffle, which is my baby. I use the iPod in Art class as well.

I listen to music on my computer. And I listen to everything- except American rap and most hip-hop. Seriously, I even listen to soundtracks from musicals. *needs to get my Israeli dance music from cassette to CD*
