"Then, we won't leave them at the house. They'll stay with us and they will always have an escort with them, especially if they decide to go back into the village for any reason." He turned to Maria and his entire presence softened. "I would like to offer my apologies once more. I don't believe we've had the pleasure of meeting. My name is Fryma. Might I ask yours?"

She looked at Moni to make sure it was okay, and he nodded. "M-my name's Maria..." She bowed, wincing at the lash already on her back that had caused her to cry out before. "It's an honor to meet you..."

Fryma smiled and bowed as well. "The pleasure is all mine. With all politeness, might I see the wound on your back? I would like to see if I can help in any way."

She hesitantly nodded, turning around to let him see it. Moni winced and his mother gasped. He hugged her and let her look away from her daughter's back with a long, red lash.

Fryma's brows knitted. "It's too deep for me to do anything. You need to rest and not do anything to strenuous on your back. I'm sorry I can't do more for you, Maria."

She turned back around and nodded in understanding, smiling shyly. "S-so are we going to be living with you from now on?" She asked, and moni nodded,causing her to smile and hug Fryma. "I'll go get my stuff and mama's." She went inside and got their scant clothing, as well as a few small treasures.

Fryma led the way silently, his mind on the battle that no doubt waited around the nearby corner. "Maria, let me carry those for you," he offered, suddenly remembering her back injury. Before she could say anything, he gently lifted the luggage from her hands, smiling kindly.

She nodded, since he'd already picked the stuff up out of her hands. They all went to the tree house, and Moni showed them the bed, helping his mother onto the feathers while his sister laid down beside her mother, awed by how soft it was. Moni smiled, watching them.

Fryma smiled as he watched the small family. When Karin and Maria were situated in the bed, he led Moni to the river side. "I was wondering, what happened to your father?"

Moni looked down.' He left.' Was all he wrote in the dirt, pain in his eyes. His father had left them for another woman, while his mother was pregnant with Maria.

"I'm sorry for asking. It must have been terrible for you. Moni, I promise nothing will happen to your family while they are in this forest. However, I will need your help to protect them."

Moni looked at him in surprise when he said that he'd need Moni's help, but smiled and nodded, hugging him. What had he done to deserve such a kind and loving man?

Fryma hugged him tightly. "I need you, Moni," he whispered. "This... This is my biggest fear come true. I need you to help me stay strong for my friends and my home."

Moni nodded and kissed him softly, looking up at him and nuzzling him. He wanted to be with him for eternity, to be a loyal companion and protect the forest alongside him... but his time was horribly limited. In only a few decades, Fryma would have to take care of him and do everything for him while he remained weak and helpless. He had less than a mere century to live while Fryma had endured over a millenia without anyone....

Fryma smiled, half in relief and half in surprise that Moni had taken the initiative to kiss him instead of vice versa. He closed his eyes and kissed Moni again, deeper and more passionately than ever before.
