Dr. James Cummins is a leader in second launguage learning and literacy development research and is a professor at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Educatio. He works on language development of learners of English as an second language. In 1979 Cummins coined the acronyms BICS and CALP to refer to processes that help a teacher to qualify a student's language. Jim Cummings' influential contributions is the concept of two typesof launguage proficiency: basic interpersonal communication skills BICS which could be acquired relatively quickly and cognitive-academic launguage proficiency CALP which involves reading, writing, mathematics and other contents subjects which are more complex. These two types of language proficiency are also called conversational and academic language proficiency. Two other Cummings' important hypotheses are the linguistic interdependence hypotheses and range of communicative demands. The linguistic interdependence hypotheses states that cognitive -academic skills learned in the native language will transfer to the new language and such skills are interdependent across languages. Communicative tasks may be more difficult for 2rd language learners depending on the task itself and the amount of contextual support available.
