"I did. Carlyle was with me."

He suddenly halted, then turned to Ty. His eyes were, for the first time since they had met, as empty as a machine's.

"Why didn't he see? I saw it, he was with me. I'm not a sycophant. What the Hell is his problem?"

"Whoa!" Ty said with a pacifying gesture, flinching. He felt his hackles rise. "Let's cool it on the crazy, okay? I don't even know what you saw, dude."

Isaac turned and began walking again.

"The things we found out in that meeting...there's some heavy things in the works, Ty. Things are about to change around here, and I don't think everyone is on the same side anymore."

Ty blinked as Isaac started to leave, then jogged to catch up with him. "Well... okay, are things going to be weird between you and Carlyle, though? You are coming back, right? When we go on the next mission, or whatever?" Politics didn't bother him. He'd been pretending he was on the right "side" since he ended up enlisted in the Coven army.

"Do I have a choice?" he said woodenly. "I'll be there. You, of all people, should know I'll support my fr- comrades."

He walked in silence for a bit. "What's your story, Ty? I get the feeling that there's more to you."

No, you don't have a choice. He grinned. "Great! I know you do. Like beating the tar out of power armors!" He chucked Isaac on the shoulder.

When he heard the question, he made the closest thing to a grimace his face could manage. "Um," was his first answer. He was not a fan of lying. "Well... I come from Pennsylvania... It's in North America," he added. What with boundaries as blurred as they were, he felt the clarification was necessary. Plus, he hardly knew any geography, himself. He wasn't even wholly certain of where they were, now. "Lived on a farm there until my parents died and... then I ended up in the military. Not much else, I guess. What about you?"

"Parents worked with the Chief Engineer," Isaac said slowly, glad of the topic change. He hadn't expected it to work. "They always wanted me to grow up and be something. I tried to tell them that I was no good as a soldier, I couldn't do it. But they didn't listen."

He glanced at Ty, a tiny spark of interest showing in his golden eye. "What...are you? If I might ask. I mean, you know I'm a Clockwork Knight, but I can't seem to really tell what you are." He had his own suspicions, of course, but it would be rude to assume.

"Oh, nice!" Ty exclaimed. The subject change was indeed nice. All Ty needed was someone's word, especially from someone like Isaac - the kid couldn't lie. Unfortunately, neither could Ty.

"I, ah..." He scratched the back of his head. "Well. I'm-" He searched the area for any reason not to answer. He wasn't human. That would be the easiest lie. The most true. Because werebeasts were kind of human, right? Except not. "I'm a... look, can we go somewhere less... crowded? Better yet, I'd rather just... not say..." He looked nervously at everyone around him. Dang it, he could smell the fear on himself. Every one of them would want him dead if they heard. Every last one. It was hard to accept, but it was one thing he had learned, before the police finally found him and put him in the foster home. Old man he had played chess with had been the only one who hadn't cared. Everyone else who found out had tried to kill him.

Maybe Isaac wouldn't want to get out of the crowd. Maybe he liked the noise and the stench. Maybe there was some reason not to effectively commit suicide because of a near-insurmountable inability to tell a lie.

Isaac looked more curious. "Well, we can leave the crowd. If you don't want to say, though, I guess that's fine."

Still, as he looked away from Ty his concern was almost palpable. Isaac's suspicions were drifting closer to being confirmed. And since Ty wasn't coming straight out about it...well, that didn't look good.

Crap. Isaac wanted to know. "Don't lie," he said quietly.

It wasn't "fine" with Isaac. Ty shook himself, letting his hair fly back and forth a little. This was good, though, right? He could tell someone, and then maybe... if he shifted in battle... no one would shoot him. Or at least, Isaac would know, and could say something. Unless Isaac decided to shoot him now, which, admittedly, was unlikely, but Ty had seen at least one "good" person turn on him. And Isaac supported the angels, kind of... Dang it. Carlyle was unpredictable, and Cassandra had taken enough for one day. Isaac was his best option.

His heart was beating hammers through his skull. Stupid fear sweat was clouding his senses. Adrenaline he didn't want, pumping through his body. He hadn't imagined he'd be quite this nervous, but the more he thought about it, the more imminent the consequences became. And for someone who was not accustomed to considering consequences, it was not a pleasant experience.

Eyes just as bright, but wary and searching, he led Isaac off to the most secluded area he could find, away from the main flow of people, then turned and looked up at him. In a whisper, he pleaded, "Please don't kill me." He took a few breaths, steadied himself, and swallowed, still grinning, sweat standing out on his forehead. He brushed his hair back from it with a weak smile. "I'm a werefox."

Isaac was so shocked at the request not to kill Ty that his previous machine-like defenses dropped, leaving him once again open to be hammerstruck by the next bit.

He put a hand to his forehead. "A...werefox?" Isaac blinked a couple of times. "I...well."

He looked into Ty's eyes. "I can believe it, actually. I had been thinking something similar." He spoke quietly, quickly. "But if that's true, and I think it is, then there must be more to your story than what you just told me. Care to fill me in?"
PostPosted: Sun Aug 09, 2009 2:43 pm

Ty felt at his own chest with a hand. There was a heartbeat. Hey, I'm alive. The concept of "pack" must have existed outside the werebeast population, then. Or... some strange variety of it. He breathed out slowly, his eyes closed, then opened them. They had back their familiar gleam. Then, he threw his arms around Isaac in a grateful hug. "Thanks, dude. I mean... wow. Okay." He backed off. "Sorry. Anyway. Um. Yeah. My story... Let's keep walking. And obviously, you can't tell anyone... until it matters. Please." His cheeks flushed as he waited for Isaac to nod before moving back into the main crowd. He didn't care where they went.

He recovered quickly, his heart and lungs returning to their regularly scheduled programming with ease. He was still paranoid of those around him, but he knew how to choose his words. His parents had taught him how to during his school years. "There's really not much else that I know of. My parents never told me much about why we were in Coven territory. I just knew we were there, and we shouldn't have been. I guess... some sort of mission? From what I've seen of the Coven, someone had to have known we were there. Especially when..." He trailed off, pausing for a bit before relating how he had witnessed his sister's presumed death, and then started hearing reports of her in the area he had originally been enlisted.

He shrugged it off. He had lived with it for a while. "So I guess I'm just sniffing the wind until I get a good lead on something. I figure if I stay on one side, at the very least, I have something to do."

Isaac nodded. "I see."

He thought for a moment before asking timidly, "And...what happens when you find this lead you're looking for? Will you leave us?"

Right now, Isaac felt like the only one he could talk to in their group was Ty.

"Well, I... I would imagine this happened right before the Outlander Secession, back as the factions started displacing the old governments," Carlyle 'answered' with a shrug. "Years ago, I know that much."

"Well... It would be a little hypocritical of me to leave, wouldn't it?" He grinned. "After making sure you were staying. But... I have to put my family first." He thought about it for a little while. "I guess it would depend on the situation. If I found one now, I'd... I don't know. I think I'd have to follow it. I mean... you'd go for your parents if they were in trouble, wouldn't you? And you knew where they were? I don't have the slightest clue what happened to them. Just... gone."

He walked without speaking for a bit. What would he do? What if the Coven needed him for something, when he found them? He had never before considered their allegiance; he had just assumed they were Coven-allied. But talking to Isaac made him realize there was the possibility they were spies of some kind. Spies... who had settled and had a family in enemy territory? Would they think he had betrayed the werebeast species?

He shook himself. No time for that kind of thinking. Too stressful. "So, hey, have you- refueled, yet? I don't know how Clockies... eat. But if it's any kind of real food, I could go for a snack somewhere." The burgers were things of the past. What had he heard in that movie? "You have to put your behind in your past." He pondered that for a little while. One day, he'd get a grip on all these sayings.
