This revelation of an old bond between his caretaker and his Orochi brethren could have almost made the boy smile. My how the world was small. “I only knew Aya and Seshiro for a small time. I was just wondering if you knew anything else about them…”. Small snake left his words at that. He did not want to aggravate his caretaker anymore. The trio escaped trouble by a width of a penny. There was no need to test those limits anymore tonight. The night would have finished off perfectly, until Orika made her self known again. Shisei was unfazed by most of her words. Yet there was one thing that even he could not grasp why it irked him so much. It was as if the farm girl just wrenched his nose to the side. It made the serpent’s eyes arch into a glare at her and his unmoving lips form into a frown. He still kept his left hand over his left eye, but one could see a change in his expression. ‘We will try and be your family?’ as in him and them? Now he just had to let his thoughts be known.

“No…. Orika… no. We are not family. Never, ever make that mistake again. If you, your boyfriend and Maya-sempai want to play the role of happy family, then go for it. I don’t care, but I will not be apart of it. I will stay in this pact as long as Ero-sensei wants me to. Once he releases this rule I am going my own way. I have my own agenda to accomplish.” the snake youth turned away from the two. “Goodnight. We’ll have much fun tomorrow…” the serpent said sarcastically, turning back around and giving a small bow before returning to his desired course. His form approached the tent, but not before passing Karite’s frame. The boy was using his chakra to push the snow away from his feet. A circle of white was forming around reaper because of his energy. Feeling malicious now, Shisei just couldn’t let it go that easily for his peer. Making the seal quickly with both of his hands a surge of light blue aura whipped around the scaly boy quickly and violently pressed back all of Karite’s work. The youth’s angry aura even went the next step and covered the poet’s ankles in snow. Covering the left eye with his palm again the wicked tongue allowed a few words to slither out to his emerald hair friend, but only at a whisper for the two to hear. “That’s how it’s done.”. Allowing his free eye to glare at his silver eyed companion the youth stated one more thing at a whisper level between the two. “Funny how you were worried about me saying something out of place to Maya-sempai when it seems you are the one who can’t find the right words. You should be careful of what you say. Orika should also be careful of what she says.”. Shisei disappeared within the tent soon after.

With that last cryptic message, the serpent child took his spot within the tent. The words of Orika, his assumptions of Maya and Seshiro’s relationship, as well as viewing the growing relations between the energy rabbit and her poetic lion made Shisei contemplate something he had never paid much thought to. Something he always accepted because as a child he was expected to accept it. He wrote quickly in the possession of his sister with a new thought in mind. Just what bond did his mother and that outsider have?

Maya heard Orika, but didn't really hear her. She stayed at the fire, and motioned for the girl to 'go'. "Keep Ruha warm," she said, no evidence of having heard the girl in her voice. However, the unshed tears in her eyes said otherwise - Maya didn't believe her. The wild girl turned towards Karite and Kore and motioned them off to bed too, then began working on their haul. There would be no sleep for her tonight; she didn't want it.

While the trio finished up and went to bed, Maya worked diligently on the kills, finishing those leathers and furs before finishing her own completely and totally. She sped up the process by using different amounts of limestone and heat, and set all the leathers and furs aside. The deer had been made leathers, the rabbits, furs. All the meat was separated and sectioned and set to dry, except for a few choice steaks from each kill which Maya would deliver to Mai in the morning. When she was done, she could see a tiny, faint tinge of yellow in the sky. It was really late - or really early. In any case, she curled up into Baki and took comfort in the lion's thick mane, seeking her rest there rather than inside her tent.

Orika whirled about and hissed at Shisei, his bad mouthing straining her nerves like a child bends a twig, testing how far the wood will curve until it snaps in two. She limped to his tent, threw the flap open, and stood there for a moment, trying to contain the bubbling anger building inside the farm girl. She pointed to him, not caring whether she was welcome in the boys' tent or not. "You can't even begin to realize how wrong you are, about everything!" she yelled, flicking him off, "I'm so sick of seeing you play the depressed loner. You want to be miserable, don't cha? You think the only way you'll ever glimpse a shred of joy is to pummel everyone beneath your feet, but then you'll be all alone, for real that time. No one will ever want to associate themselves with you. I saw how bad you took Yuki and Seshiro's disappearance so YOU don't ever think that you don't need other people." She kicked up a cloud of dirt, but again, didn't care worth a crap that the dust settled all over Shisei and Karite's bedding. She was pissed and that was all that mattered. "Go ahead. Cut my throat in my sleep," she muttered, before turning away and walking calmly towards her and Maya's tent. Shisei didn't have the guts to slaughter her. As Orika walked past Karite, she only gave him a sorry nod before crawling into the tent. She draped a blanket over the snoozing Ruha and curled up herself. It had been too long a day...

Karite stood from his training as he heard Maya's order. He would not sleep in a tent he did not deserve according to her. He would train more, or so he thought till Shisei ruined his perfect beginning. The boy did not retaliate this time though. He let it go such as it should have been. Watching Orika it seemed snake eyes had been getting under her skin quicker than anyones. As he saw the seen unfold he whistled for Kore to stop his training. As the cub walked over to him he petted him and slipped him into the tent with Orika and Ruha. No reason for the cub to freeze because his bedding was dirty. As for Karite he took a seat at the fire and watched as Maya did her work. He spoke no words only watched. Soon he found himself falling off into a deep slumber from the day.

The faint yellow orb was beginning to crawl and make its ascension into the sky, signifying a new day. Its glow giving the snow filled land a small hint of orange color and a slight increase in temperature. Shisei awoke and stepped outside in his appropriate attire and scarf wrapped around his mouth, concealing the bottom half of his face from the world. His mood was tepid despite all that happened yesterday. Specifically before his sleep. Just as the serpent youth had fallen into a slumber, his tent flap was opened by a screaming Orika. Throughout her entire tirade, little snake did not make any movements to signify an awake state. Though considering the pitch and loudness of her voice, it could be a wonder if she did not wake up some of the citizens in the housing district. She believes that he needs others? What a fallacy. Yuki and Seshiro were disappointments. That was all. The snake youth quickly corrected that thought. In actuality they did exactly as expected. Seshiro and his brother betrayed both villages in order to survive or fulfill some other intention that obviously could not be done by either. Yuki, being the one to lose her husband as well as figure out that her love for him was only one sided and thus a lie, has become so withdrawn and grief stricken that her mind cannot cope to deal with anything. In the end she has come to hate the Orochi, including Shisei and her own daughter. The elder Orochi brothers driven by their avarice and desires. Yuki, like most women, lost to a frail heart and will sooner or later come to feed on her hate of the snake tribe. The thing that depressed the serpent youth about the situation was that he held those two in higher esteem when contrasted to the other shinobi he met and compared Yuki to his mother. “That woman cannot compare to mother after all.”. A happy family cannot survive in this world. Only the strongest survive. Shisei felt that despite Orika being older than him, she was more of a child than he ever was.

“Such useless ideals…” the boy’s mind thought as his frame went further into the snowy land and icy, arid air. The gold orbs peered at the female tent. Shisei would have loved nothing more to cut into her throat so far that his fingers could touch the back vertebrae of her neck. The only thing that kept his frame from doing so were too things. Most importantly if the death of either her or Karite got back to Ero-sensei then it would not bode well for Shisei. The man’s mandate made both of them untouchable… for now. The second reason was for him to go so far for such a trite person? That would be an insult to his demeanor, although the girl was slowly begging for such action. Golden pupils scanned the rest of the lions den to find his sempai curled up within her lion and Karite asleep in a sitting position. Perhaps watching her sleep before his eyes went into slumber? This made the maverick’s snooze slightly better because he had the entire tent to himself. Only slightly though cause the dread head didn’t find his accommodations satisfactory, but that could be taken care of later. A few items to ‘spruce’ his tent up. Not desiring to wake anyone the youth moved off to an area behind the tent by his self. He let his form drop into the snow face first, only being stopped by his elbows. His legs stiffened and the youth went into a push up position, except his form rested on the elbows instead of the hands. The white body wiggled slightly until it became as straight as pole and then the child contracted his abs. It was an exercise that the serpent did not take often, but the times he did it gave satisfying results. Now he just needed to hold the position for a long duration. The numbers began to count off in his head. “Nine… ten… eleven…”.

Karite's sleep was less then satisfactory, but it allowed him to spend some time with Maya. The fact they were both sleeping also allowed him to calm himself a bit, but he had enough anger to continue his training. Then his wake up call came crunching through the snow. As Shisei walked by his eyes snapped open. Breathing in deeply the cold air rush through his body and filled his lungs. Which meant his wounds had healed and he was now back to a hundred percent. Standing he walked through the snow out in the grounds in front of snake eyes himself. "Good to see I am not the only one who rises with the sun." Karite sat down and crossed his legs. Smiling the boy removed his black fest and mesh shirt. He slowly removed the bandages around his abdomen and was satisfied with another scar. Tossing the bandages the boy put his close back on and formed his fingers into he same symbol from before. "Shisei, your going to have to get use to Orika and myself. Something tells me we will be stuck together for a long time to come. You know you cant fight her one on one fairly. You also know that I don't give up and I work just as hard as you do if not harder. So lets be realistic about our situation and cool it on the insults and threats. We wont harm you and you just keep doing what you do best. Being who you are. The only question is Shisei, why are you so against me and Orika?" The reaper smiled and closed his eyes as he began to search his body for the mysterious aura that he still knew nothing about. This early in the morning even the reaper could not muster enough energy to form a circle around his bum let alone his body. It was going to be a long day.

Her mother always said that hard work cures sleep problems like willow bark to a headache. Thus, Orika slept like a rock, never once even stirring in her sleep, except to turn her head when she dreamt of water splashing on her cheek. When the first morning rays penetrated through the crack between the tent folds, the light bending to slap away at her closed eyelids, the girl wrinkled her nose as she clutched to a light, airy dream she'd just been having. When more beams slipped beneath the covers, Orika lost control of her dream and the images disappeared into her subconscious. She sat up and the first thing she noticed was how her back ached like the oni had beat it with sticks while she slumbered. The girl was definitely not used to sleeping on the ground, especially during the mid of winter. If it weren't for the various hides, though cold as ice in the sleepy morning, she'd be frozen as a block of ice in the tundra! Orika shivered and warmed her hands with her steamy breath. It wasn't as cold as yesterday, for sure, but who wanted to wake up even the slightest bit chilly? There was something poking her in the back that probably woke her up. She reached under the hides and pulled out a length of wire about three quarters of a metre in length and half a centimetre thick. What was that doing there? Orika wrapped the wire about her wrist and crawled out of the tent. She stretched, then grinned and decided to test her legs by doing a running somersault! The farm girl shook the ice from her legs then charged towards the boys' tent, then tucked in her chin and rolled right in front of the entrance without feeling any pain in her lower extremities. Great! She was getting so tired of having to use those stupid crutches.

Orika landed awkwardly on her butt in front of Karite and Maya, giving them a cheery thumbs up while she ignored the snake in the grass. There was no reason to disturb the early morning euphoria with negative energy. "'Morning!" she chirped, waving at the two, "Didja sleep well? Oi, Maya, should I go ahead and make breakfast?" Orika giggled and laid back on the snow, letting the stomped on powder cling to her hair. Boy, she really needed a bath, but then again, she was around friends in the same situation so it didn't really matter. She carelessly unwound the wire from her hand and tossed it into the dying fire, so that the metal lit a fiery red when it struck away the charred ashes and hit the red hot coals. Orika watched the bloody carrot metal flash in the dim dawn in awe. She pulled the wire out by the part not immersed in flame and cooled it down by sticking the wiry rod in the snow. As the metal hissed and wisps of smoke curled up from the white-grey ground, Orika grabbed an icy stick and touched it to the burning part, which was now the colour of the simmering coals. She pressed on the heated metal and divided the wire in half, crafting a right angle where the bend was. The girl then folded the wire again at the edge, creating an uneven frame, which she playfully held over the fire until the metal became soft. Orika stuck this brand into the snow and watched as an incomplete square popped up.

He was walking against the wind. For any other person, it would have been an unpleasant experience, but Xyn simply let the warmth of his own breath fill the space between his heavy hood and his face. The wind wasn't strong enough to fully penetrate his covering, carefully placed as it was. The boy had no real concern for what he wore, but how he wore it was of a different nature. Because he always chose such thick clothing, he made sure the articles were arranged in the most comfortable fashion.

Every few steps, Xyn would look up around at the remnants of the snow. He thought it so futile trying to get rid of something that would eventually take care of itself. Was it really more convenient to spend so much effort shoveling the snow out of the way? It wasn't as if anyone in the village used any kind of mobile device. He would have let such a trivial thing consume his thoughts longer if he hadn't started to recognize where he was.

Xyn stepped more slowly, placing his feet together when he stopped, thinking that Maya would be the first person he would see. Instead, the wretched expression that appeared on his face stared toward Karite first, not really for any specific reason, his expression lightening as he tried to hide his irritation while looking at the others. He took a moment to close his eyes and clear his throat while he regained his focus. Why were all these people here? He repeated the question over and over as he pulled his muscles forward, mainly to drown out the question of why he wanted to be alone with Maya; he did everything he could to dismiss such a thought.

Taking one last exhale to warm his face, Xyn let his journal dangle at the side of his left hand while he removed his hood. He did it at his usual pace, making it unintentionally dramatic. Any observer might think he were about to pull out a saber made purely of light and start cutting everyone down for the sake of his emperor, although any person envisioning such a bazaar scene was unlikely. The polite thing to do at such a moment would be a simple morning greeting, but the fact that so many people were here this time of morning ruined what little of a good mood he had left. He parted his lips for only a moment, the words falling short speech and giving way to a sigh. The boy simply let his head sink while his thoughts mangled together a different phrase from what he intended.

"... too early." He finally turned his back to the group and sat on the ground, returning his attention to the journal.

“Twelve… thirteen…” the thought process was cut when the reaper awoke and decided to take a seat near the youth. This also hindered his rigid form and the frame placed both knees under him. His eyes lowered half way and allowed one eye to stare at Karite. The teen tossing away his bandages and looking at the scar that Orika had given him. A mark of embarrassment, the serpent began to think. This thought was also cut short when Karite began to speak. “Amazing how you assume so much and know so little. You assume I can’t beat Orika, because she managed to take advantage of a situation and almost killed the two of us? While that was a correct form of action, do not insult me by thinking that she is equal or even superior to me.” the child said first before trying to straighten his body. He moved his left knee back, but the right one stayed underneath his abdomen. “You also assume that the two of you can hurt me. What are you trying to imply by that? The two of you should know the only reason I have not killed either of you in your sleep is because of Ero-sensei.” as he tried to stiffen his right knee it slid out from underneath him. The snake did not fall though and managed to catch himself in time. This time both knees remained underneath him. There was still more he had to answer for the reaper. “Finally you assume I have something against you and Orika which is untrue. Amazing this comes from the person who decided to call me friend and shake my hand. Just who are the ones who decided to attack me when my back was turned? Who are the ones who want to fight me? Who is the one who kicked dust and yelled at me when trying to sleep? I have nothing against Orika either. I wouldn’t give an obnoxious farm girl that much attention. I will have to get revenge on her though. When that time comes stay out of it.” Finally the small frame was in the correct position to start again. The youth began to count numbers off in his head from the beginning while still trying to answer his peer’s question. “I’ve already seen as much as I need of you and Orika during that incident in the farmhouse. There is only one person who is my opponent on this island. The one person I need to defeat to know I’m the best in the academy class. Tanu-kun is my opponent.” “One…two…three…” his brain began to count off.

Maya didn't particularly feel like opening her eyes, since she hadn't slept more than two hours and had simply been absorbing Baki's lazy heat. But the bickering was getting on her nerves - the grounds were her sanctuary, and she hated all this noise. And a fourth set of footsteps and a soft voice made her spine stiffen, and, sadly, her heart skip a beat. She growled internally at herself, then opened her mouth instead of her eyes.

"If you're gonna argue, then leave. I don't want to hear any fights while you're here, or none of you will be able to walk for the next week," she said quietly, and then addressed Orika when she opened her eyes. She would give this girl that iota of respect, at least. She had woken up willing to forget the previous day and start anew, and Maya found that she liked that ... a lot.

"I don't remember the last time I ate breakfast. If the boys are hungry, you're free to feed them. Your hunt and mine are all prepared and set over there. The leathers and furs will be ready in a day or two." Maya took a small breath and stretched, standing and hesitating before walking over to Xyn's cloaked form. She stood behind him for a second, Baki licking her hand as he followed. What to say? He had a book in hand.. was he reading? No, writing - the pages were half blank.

"Douken-san ... what brings you to the Grounds .. ? I haven't seen you since before I left for the Rice Country .. I thought you were gone."

The snake was back in his training position, staring off into the Tategami Grounds and positioned his pupil away from Karite’s silver one. “Now I have my own question. Why did you come to Shimagakure and what is your purpose for wanting the life of a shinobi?” the boy somewhat coldly asked. He felt that his reason was the best out of all the other academy students and perhaps even some of the genin. Still that would be an assumption and it would be hypocritical to have that type of thinking without an answer. “thirteen…. fourteen… fifteen…”. As he waited for an answer a new face came upon the grounds. And very early in the morning too. Shisei had expected himself to be the only one up. Karite was surprising enough, but now this person. He was a boy with an eye patch. With small scars around the covered eye. His body seemed to be big yet his long face and skinny neck seemed out of place for the large body Kiketsu saw in front of him. The gold orb glared at the boy when he said ‘it was too early’. “Feh… another slacker…” Shisei thought. His mind focused on training his mouth decided to make a comment to this new comer. “Then go back to sleep... What is your name?” Shisei asked as the numbers continued to increase in his head. “Nineteen….” As the numbers continued to roll in his head the small roar of Maya almost made him lose balance. He couldn’t turn from his position, but decided to give an apology. After all it was pivotal Maya stayed on his side and not the others. “Sorry Maya-sempai. Karite was being too loud. We’ll be more quiet.” he stated aloud. Then his ears picked up the lioness talking with mono eye. “She knows him…”. Even more so she used the honorific ‘san’. Just who was this boy?

Orika silently observed a new person come into the grounds, a darkly hooded figure who seemed to have a relationship with Maya. As she reacted to him in surprise at not having seen the boy for a while, the farm girl wondered whether Maya was really alone as she said she was or whether it was all in her head. She seemed addicted to living on the grounds all alone as "pride leader." It was a rather sorry view from her perspective at least, that a girl wouldn't even know someone she was obviously close to was still alive. Orika shook her head to herself as her mind wandered over to the snake's monologue. He was acting tough again, like a legless fiend whose only way of reaching out to the world was through bites and "manly" rattles. It was sad to see that the serpent still thought like that, but it wasn't her business what went through his head, at least until he mentioned how he saw her as nothing, that he had nothing against her, that she wasn't even an opponent. Oh, that stupid sap now claimed that he'd done nothing to deserve their antagonism. As if all his arrogance, threats to kill them, and constant derision meant nothing. Well, if he wouldn't give an iota about her, she wouldn't care about him. Orika cursed underneath her breathe when she noticed that her wire had hardened and thus made incapable of more bending.

But she did care. Who couldn't? Though she barely knew the snake, he had become as much a part of her life as Maya or Karite. To hear that she was no more than a worm to crush by his pale feet irritated, frustrated her. It wasn't that she necessarily wanted his hatred, but that was better than being left out of and tossed aside. After all, if she looked at the deeper comic books, there were many villains that caused destruction and mayhem just to be noticed. There was nothing worse than surviving through life like never being born. Momentarily crushed, Orika sulked, still remembering that she was giving the snake the silent treatment. It was easier than talking at the moment anyhow. The farm girl laid down the wire and got to tending the fire, blowing on the coals and adding more firewod to ignite a flame. When she had a roaring blaze, the girl held the fire deeply over the fire and watched as it ignited into a red hot burst. An ember leapt out at her and struck her skin so that Orika yelped and dropped the wire completely into the fire. She doused the burning sensation into snow, sighing as she realized she wasn't going to die a fiery death. Now for the wire... How could she get that darn thing out of the fire now?
