Haru wasn't aloud to use earth bending because the fire nation was occupying the area D;

Boy, are you confused! Long Feng runs a pet resort! Aang left him there to get some RnR while they tried to get an audience with the Earth King and Long Feng took such great care of Appa that by the end Appa almost liked Long better than Aang!

I must disagree! Hama was a perfect grandmother who made Katara learn blood bending for good reason.
